  • Concrete structures such as bridges, pavement, and offshore structures are normally subjected to repeated load. Because highway and airfield pavements are to resist tension in bending, fatigue failure behavior is very important the fatigue life of materials. Therefore, in this paper was carried according to the fatigue test method and experiment variables for pavement concrete. The fatigue tests were applied split tension($150{\times}75$ in size) and flexural($150mm{\times}150mm{\times}550mm$ in size) beam fatigue test method. Major experimental variable in the fatigue tests in order to consideration of fatigue life were conducted loading frequency of 1, 5, 10, 20Hz and loading shape of block, sine, triangle and moisture condition of dry and wet condition and curing age of 28day and 56day. The test results show that the effect of loading frequency increasing the frequency increased fatigue life, decreased significant at frequencies below 200 cycles. The effect of loading wave form on fatigue life show that a block decreased, triangular increased in comparison with sine. The effect of moisture condition decreased in wet condition in comparison with dry condition. The effect of curing age increased in 564ays in comparison with 28day.

  • Through the 1982 Urahawa-ohi and the 1995 Kobe earthquakes, a number of bridge columns were observed to develop a flexural-shear failure due to the bond slip as a consequence of premature termination of the column longitudinal reinforcement. Because the seismic behavior of RC bridge piers is largely dependent on the performance of the plastic hinge legion of RC bridge piers, it is desirable that the seismic capacity of RC bridge pier is to evaluate as a curvature ductility. The provision for the lap splice of longitudinal steel was not specified in KHBDS(Korea Highway Bridge Design Specification) before the implementation of 1992 seismic design code, but the lap splice of not more than 50%, longitudinal reinforcement was newly allowed in the 2005 version of the KHBDS. The objective of this research is to investigate the distribution and ductility of the curvature of RC bridge column with the lap splice of longitudinal reinforcement in the plastic hinge legion. Six (6) specimens were made in 600 mm diameter with an aspect ratio of 2.5 or 3.5. These piers were cyclically subjected to the quasi-static loads with the uniform axial load of $P=0.1f_{ck}A_g$. According to the slip failure of longitudinal steels of the lap spliced specimen by cyclic loads, the curvatures of the lower and upper parts of the lap spliced region were bigger and smaller than the corresponding paris of the specimen without a lap splice, respectively. Therefore, the damage of the lap spliced test column was concentrated almost on the lower part of the lap spliced region, that appeared io be failed in flexure.

  • The use of fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) reinforcing bars in concrete structures has been increased as an alternative of steel reinforcement which has shown greater vulnerability to corrosion problem. However, the long-term performance of concrete members with FRP reinforcement is still questioned in comparison to the used of steel reinforcement. This study presents the results of an experimental study on the long-term behaviors of GFRP (glass fiber reinforced polymer) bar reinforced concrete beams after exposed to accelerated aging in an environmental chamber with temperature of $46^{\circ}C$ ($115^{\circ}F$) and 80% of relative humidity up to 300 days. The objectives of this research was to compare strength degradation and change of ductility between GFRP reinforced concrete beams and steel reinforcement beams after accelerated aging. Two types (wrapped and sand-coated surface) of GFRP bars and steel were reinforced. in concrete beams. Test results show that the failure modes of GFRP bar reinforced concrete beams are very similar with traditional RC beams, and the change of load-carrying capacity of steel reinforcing concrete beam is greater than that of GFRP bar reinforcing concrete beam under the accelerated aging. Test result also shows that the use of GFRP reinforcing in concrete could be introduced more brittle failure than that of steel reinforcing for practical application. The deformability factor up to compression failures indicates no significant variation before and after exposure of accelerated aging.

  • Experimental and analytical studies on the behavioral characteristics of a pre-stressed (PS) steel girder are conducted to investigate the effects of deviators on the non-linear inelastic properties of the PS system. In this regard, 4 test specimens consisting of a steel H-beam, a straight cable with eccentricity, anchorages, and deviators are built and failure tests are performed under two-point loading. In addition, in-plane elastic deformation theories for the PS system without a deviator, and with three deviators at regular intervals are analytically formulated and solved using a symbolic calculation technique. To verify the validity of the experimental and the proposed analytical theories, the results obtained using FEM models composed of beam elements, rigid beam elements, and truss cable elements, are compared to the experimental results and the analytical solutions. As a result, it is determined that externally installed un-bonded deviators inhibit flexural deformation of the deformed beam to such an extent that their elastic stiffness, and failure strength are significantly improved compared to those of the PS system without deviators.

  • This paper focuses on the experimental study for investigating the performance for lap splice of hooked or headed reinforcement in beam with different depths. In the experiment, seven specimens, with its variables as the lap length of headed or hooked bar, the existence of stirrups, etc., was manufactured. Bending test was conducted. Lap strengths by test were compared with the theoretical model based on KCI2012. The result showed that the cracks at failure mode occurred along the axial direction to a headed bar. The initial stiffness and the stiffness after initial crack were similar for all specimens. For HS series specimens without stirrups, a 25% increase in lap length was increased 11.8~18.1% maximum strengths. For HH series specimens without stirrups, a increase in lap length did not affect the maximum strengths because of the pryout failure of headed bar. For HS series specimens, the theoretical lap strengths based on KCI2012 considering the B grade lap and the reduction factor for stirrup were evaluated. They are smaller than the test strengths and can ensure the safety in terms of strength capacity. For HH series specimens, the stirrups in the lap zone are needed to prevent the pryout behaviour of headed bar.

  • This paper summarizes the development and evaluation of the reinforcement details of CFRP plates to improve the bending performance of wooden beams. In this study, the reinforcing technology using high-strength bolts for the end of beam were developed as reinforcement details for reinforcing wooden beams with CFRP plates by EBM method. In order to evaluate the bending performance, a bending test was conducted for the specimens with details of reinforcement such as the EBM method and the NSM method. From the experimental results, the EBM specimens without end restraints had both the CFRP plate attachment failure and the splitting failure of the wood. In the load-displacement curve, the non-reinforced specimens exhibited linear elastic behavior and then brittle fracture after the maximum load. The maximum load of the specimens reinforced by the EBM method increased by 31.5~63.0% compared to the non-reinforced specimens, and the maximum load according to the end restraints of the high-strength bolts increased by 24.0%. Based on the reinforcement amount of the same CFRP plate, EBM reinforcement was 2.67 times larger in maximum load increase rate than NSM reinforcement.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the shear strengthening effectiveness of the beams strengthened with near surface mounted (NSM) and external bonded (EB) CFRP strips. A total of nine concrete beams were made and tested. From this study, it was found that the shear stiffness and strength of the beams strengthened with NSM and EB strips were significantly improved compared to the control beam. Failure of the beam strengthened with NSM and EB strips was initiated by shear cracks, propagated diagonally to the adjacent epoxy grooves without crossing the epoxy and finally sudden diagonal crack connecting the point of application of load and flexural crack was occurred. For the beam strengthened combined with NSM and EB CFRP strips, the tensile strains in the NSM CFRP strips were observed in the range of 0.35% to 0.45% and strains with EB strips were measured about 0.3%.

  • The steel tube-reinforced concrete (ST-RC) composite column is a novel type of composite column, consisting of a steel tube embedded in reinforced concrete. The objective of this paper is to investigate the effect of cumulative damage on the seismic behavior of ST-RC columns through experimental testing. Six large-scale ST-RC column specimens were subjected to high axial forces and cyclic lateral loading. The specimens included two groups, where Group I had a higher amount of transverse reinforcement than Group II. The test results indicate that all specimens failed in a flexural mode, characterized by buckling and yielding of longitudinal rebars, failure of transverse rebars, compressive crushing of concrete, and steel tube buckling at the base of the columns. The number of loading cycles was found to have minimal effect on the strength capacity of the specimens. The number of loading cycles had limited effect on the deformation capacity for the Group I specimens, while an obvious effect on the deformation capacity for the Group II specimens was observed. The Group I specimen showed significantly larger deformation and energy dissipation capacities than the corresponding Group II specimen, for the case where the lateral cyclic loads were repeated ten cycles at each drift level. The ultimate displacement of the Group I specimen was 25% larger than that of the Group II counterpart, and the cumulative energy dissipated by the former was 2.8 times that of the latter. Based on the test results, recommendations are made for the amount of transverse reinforcement required in seismic design of ST-RC columns for ensuring adequate deformation capacity.

  • The effective strength of concrete struts must be determined accurately for the reliable strut-tie model analysis and design of structural concrete. In this study, the equations of the effective strength, which are useful for the three types of determinate and indeterminate strut-tie models of reinforced concrete deep beams employed in current design codes, are proposed. The effects of shear span-to-effective depth ratio, compressive strength of concrete, and flexural and shear reinforcement ratios are reflected in the development of the proposed equations. To examine the appropriateness of the proposed equations, the strengths of 241 reinforced concrete deep beams, all tested to shear failure, are evaluated by using the three types of strut-tie models with the existing and proposed equations.

  • Most bridge piers were practically designed and constructed with lap spliced longitudinal reinforcing steels before the 1992 seismic design provisions of Korea Bridge Design Specification were implemented. It has been known that lap splice of longitudinal reinforcement in the plastic hinge region is not desirable for seismic performance of RC bridge piers. The objective of this research is to evaluate the seismic performance of existing circular reinforced concrete bridge piers by the Quasi-static test and to propose the need of seismic retrofit of existing bridge piers through the damage level. Test specimens were nonseismically designed with the aspect ratio 4.0 which could induce the flexural failure mode. It was confirmed from this experiment that significant reduction of seismic performance was observed for test specimens with lap spliced longitudinal reinforcing steels. Pertinent seismic retrofit was determined to be needed for existing RC bridge piers with the lap-spliced of $50\%$ longitudinal reinforcing steels.
