  • In this study, the flexural test for reinforced high performance fiber reinforced cementitious composites (R/HPFRCC) members has been conducted in order to investigate the flexural behavior including the effect of an ordinary tensile reinforcing bar. Through the test, it was observed that the flexural strength increased due to the stable tensile stress transfer of HPFRCC, even up to the ultimate state. In addition, no localized crack appeared until the yielding of the reinforcement. From the layered section analysis of the tested members, it was found that the analysis with the tensile model obtained from the tension stiffening test showed better agreement with the flexural test results, whereas the analysis with direct tension test results overestimated the flexural capacity. Through the experimental and analytical studies, two flexural failure modes have been defined in this paper; concrete crushing at the top compression layer or tensile failure at the bottom tensile layer of the beam section. Based on these two flexural failure modes, a simple formula that estimates the ultimate flexural strength of the member has been proposed in this paper. The proposed equations can be useful in a design and an analysis of R/HPFRCC members.

  • This paper reports the experimental and analytical investigations for evaluating the flexural strength of a RC slab strengthened with carbon fiber sheet (CFS). The evaluation of the ultimate flexural strength of a slab is tried under the assumption that the failure occurs when the shear stress mobilized at the interface between the concrete bottom and the glued CFS reaches its bond strength. The shear stress is evaluated theoretically and the bond strength is obtained by a laboratory test. The ultimate flexural strength is obtained by flexural static test of the slab specimen, which corresponds to the part of a real slab. From the results, the new approach based on the bond strength between concrete and CFS looks feasible to evaluate the flexural strength of the CFS and RC composite slab.

  • Reinforced concrete bridge columns with relatively small aspect ratio show flexure-shear behavior, which is flexural behavior at initial and medium displacement stages and shear failure at final stage. Since the columns with flexure-shear failure have lower ductility than those with flexural failure, shear capacity curve models shall be applied as well as flexural capacity curve in order to determine ultimate displacement for seismic design or performance evaluation. In this paper, a modified shear capacity curve model is proposed and compared with the other models such as the CALTRANS model, Aschheim et al.'s model, and Priestley et al.'s model. Four shear capacity curve models are applied to the 4 full scale circular bridge column test results and the accuracy of each model is discussed. It may not be fully adequate to drive a final decision from the application to the limited number of test results, however the proposed model provides the better prediction of failure mode and ultimate displacement than the other models for the selected column test results.

  • In this paper, an analytical model is proposed to predict the shear strenth of RC beams strengthened by FRP. This predictional model is composed of two basic models-the upper bound theorem for shear failure (shear tension or shear compression criteria) and a truss model based on the lower bound theorem for diagonal tension creteria. Also, a simple flexural theory based on USD is used to explain flexural failure. The major cause of destruction of RC beams shear strengthened by FRP does not lie in FRP fracture but in the loss of load capacity incurred by rip-off failure of shear strengthening material. Since interfacial shear stree between base concrete and the FRP is a major variable in rip-off failure mode, it is carefully analyzed to derive the shear strengthening effect of FRP. The ultimate shear strength and failure mode of RC beams, using different strengthening methods, estimated in this predictional model is then compared with the result derived from destruction experiment of RC beams shear strengthened using FRP. To verify the accuracy and consistency of the analysis, the estimated results using the predictional model are compared with various other experimental results and data from previous publications. The result of this comparative analysis showed that the estimates from the predictional model are in consistency with the experimental results. Therefore, the proposed shear strength predictional model is found to predict with relative accuracy the shear strength and failure mode of RC beams shear strengthened by FRP regardless of strengthening method variable.

  • The need to monitor and undertake remidial works on large structures has greatly increased in recent years due to the appearance of widespread faults in large structures such as bridges and buildings, etc, of 20 or more years of age. The health condition of structures must be monitored continuously to maintenance the structures. In order to do in-situ monitoring, the sensor is necessary to be embedded in the structures. Fiber optic sensors can be embedded in the structures to get the health information in the structures. The fiber sensor was constructed with $3{\times}3$ fiber couplers to sense the multi-point strains and failure instants. The 4 RC (reinforced concrete) beams were made to 2 of A type, 2 of B type beams. These beams were reinforced by the reinforcing bars, and were tested under the flexural loading. The behavior of the beams was simultaneously measured by the fiber optic sensors, electrical strain gages, and LVDT. The states of the beams were interpreted by these all signals. By these experiments, There were verified that the fiber optic sensors could measure the structural strains and failure instants of the RC beams, The fiber sensors were well operated until the failure of the beams. It was shown that the strains of the reinforcing steel bar can be used to monitor the health condition of the beams through the flexural test of RC beams. On the other words, the results were arrived that the two strains in the reinforcing bar measured at the same point can give the information of the structural health status. Also, the failure instants of beams were well detected from the fiber optic filtered signals.

  • This article presents the flexural behaviour of reinforced fly ash (FA)-based geopolymer concrete (GPC) beams with partial replacement of FA for about 10% by weight with paper sludge ash (PSA). The beams were made of M35 grade concrete and cured under three curing conditions for comparison viz., ambient curing, external exposure curing, and oven curing at $60^{\circ}C$. The beams were experimentally tested at the 28th day of casting after curing by conducting two-point loading flexural test. Performance aspects such as load carrying capacity, first crack load, load-deflection and moment-curvature behaviours of both types of beams were experimentally studied and their results were compared under different curing conditions. To verify the response of reinforced GPC beams numerically, an ANSYS 13.0 finite element program was also used. The result shows that there is a good agreement between computer model failure behaviour with the experimental failure behaviour.

  • ACI318-89 Recommended that when the specified compressive strength of concrete in a column is greater than1.4 times that specified for a floor system, top surface of the column concrete shall extend 2ft(600mm)into the slab from the face of column to avoid unexpected brittle failure. The major variables are extension distance, flexural strength ratio(Mr), and shear reinforcement ratio(Vs). Test results are as follows ; (1) The failure modes of specimens under cyclic loading were concentrated at critical region from beam-column joint face. (2) Ductility index($\mu$f) were increased with increasing of shear confinement ratio and flexural strength ratio. (3)The specimens with 2ft extension distance showed more ductility than the specimens with 1ft extension distance.

  • This paper is intended to investigate the behavior of flexural-shear cracking in reinforced concrete beams without web reinforcement with FEM incorporated into a linear elastic fracture mechanics approach(LEFM). Each crack was propagated progressively by a finite length, then the quantitative reponses were examined. The results show that the horizontal crack was initiated by the bond-jnduced shear stress due to horizontal shearing action of the T-C force couple after the formation of the critical flexural crack. Also, the horizontal crack is considered to be a major factor of shear failure in slender reinforced concrete beams without web reinforcement.

  • Tensile strength of CFRP (Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer) is approximately 10 times higher than that steel reinforcement, but the design strength of CFRP is normally reduced by the bond failure between RC and CFRP. Many researches have been carried out, concerned with bond behavior between RC and CFRP to prevent the unpredicted bond failure of RC beam strengthened by CFRP, but the national design code for design bond strength of CFRP hasn't been constructed. In this study, 3 beams specimen strengthened by CFRP under the variable of bonded length were tested to derive the design bond strength of CFRP to the RC flexural members. Also 2 beams specimen strengthened by CFRP were tested to inspect the construction environment effects such as mixing error of epoxy resin and the amount of primer epoxy resin. From the test results, It is concluded that the maximum design bond strength of CFRP to RC flexural member is considered to be $\tau_{a}$=8kgf/$cm^{2}$.
