FRP has been used very much as high strength core materials for insulators because of its high strength and good insulation properties. The fiber orientation of FRP has a great effect on FRP strength because the strength of FRP mainly depends on the strength of fiber. In this study, compression and bending stress were simulated along to the orientation of glass fiber. In addition, FRP was made by pultrusion and filament winding method. The compression and flexural strength were measured. The tendency of compression and flexural strength according to the fiber orientation of practical measured value of FRP was similar to simulated results.
Seismic design of reinforced concrete (RC) structures requires a certain minimum level of flexural ductility. For example, Eurocode EN1998-1 directly specifies a minimum flexural ductility for RC beams, while Chinese code GB50011 limits the equivalent rectangular stress block depth ratio at peak resisting moment to achieve a certain nominal minimum flexural ductility indirectly. Although confinement is effective in improving the ductility of RC beams, most design codes do not provide any guidelines due to the lack of a suitable theory. In this study, the confinement for desirable flexural ductility performance of both normal- and high-strength concrete beams is evaluated based on a rigorous full-range moment-curvature analysis. An effective strategy is proposed for flexural ductility design of RC beams taking into account confinement. The key parameters considered include the maximum difference of tension and compression reinforcement ratios, and maximum neutral axis depth ratio at peak resisting moment. Empirical formulae and tables are then developed to provide guidelines accordingly.
Due to many advantage of advanced composite material, research on the composite compression member is initiated. In this paper structural characteristics of concrete filled glass fiber reinforced composite tubular member is studied. Through 4-point flexural test with various level of axial force, the performance of composite compression member was analyzed. Also numerical method to find P-M diagram of composite compression member was developed. It is demonstrated that result of numerical method agree well with experimental results.
The aims of this study were to determine mechanical properties of steel-fiber reinforced concrete under splitting tensile, flexural and compressive loading, and thus to improve the possible applications of concrete. The major factors experimentally investigated in this study were the fiber content and the length and the diameter of fibers. The major results obtained are summarized as follows : 1.The strength, strain, elastic modulus and energy obsorption capability of steel-fiber reinforced concrete under splitting tensile loading were significantly improved by increasing the fiber content or the aspect ratio. 2.The flexural strength, central deflection, and flexural toughness of steel4iber reinforced beams were significantly improved by increasing the fiber content or the aspect ratio. And flexural behavior characteristic was good at the aspect ratio of about 60 to 75. 3.The strength, strain, and energy absorption capability in compression were increased with the increase of the fiber content. These effects were not so sensitive to the aspect ratio. The energy absorption capability was improved only slightly with the increase of the fiber length. 4.The elastic modulus, transverse strains, and poisson's ratios in compression were not influenced by the fiber content. 5.The steel-fibers were considered to be appropriated as the materials covering the weakness of concrete because the mechanical properties of concrete in tension and flexure were significantly improved by steel-fiber reinforcement.
This paper presents an analytical investigation pertaining to the elastic buckling behavior of pultruded fiber reinforced plastic equal-leg angle members under concentric axial compression. The elastic local and global buckling (flexural, torsional, and flexural-torsional) analyses are conducted, respectively, and the analytical results are compared with the existing experimental results. The differences were more than 10%, and the experimental results were higher than the analytical results.
The aim of this study is to determine the flexural properties(Modulus of Rupture, Modulus of Elasticity) of Platanus occidentalis L. laminated beams fabricated with 1, 3, 5, 8, 15 lamination and Tension, Compression lamination. The results were as follows: 1. MOR increased with increasing number of lamination in 3, 5, 8, 15-beam and Tension lamination beam. MOR of Compression lamination beam was lower than that of 3-beam, MOR of vertical beam not having Tension or compression lamination was lower than that of horizontal beam, but MOR of vertical beam with tension or compression lamination was same or slightly higher than that of horizontal beam. 2. The allowable working stress showed the same tendency. This stress increased with increasing number of lamination. This value of Tension lamination beam was higher than that of compression lamination beam. 3. MOE of all laminated beams was higher than that of solid beam and Tension lamination beam was higher than that of 3-beam. MOE of Tension lamination beam was higher than that of Compression lamination beam. MOE of all vertical beam was higher than that of horizontal beam except for T-2, T-5, C-3. 4. Most beam failures appeared to begin in tension. These tension failures were classified into Splintering tension, Cross-grained tension, Simple tension, Brittle tension. All test beam failures could be classified into three categories. 1) Tension failure 2) Compression failure 3) Horizontal shear failure.
Materials which exhibit different elastic moduli in tension and compression are known as bimodular materials. The bimodular materials model, which is founded on the criterion of positive-negative signs of principal stress, is important for the structural analysis and design. However, due to the inherent complexity of the constitutive relation, it is difficult to obtain an analytical solution of a bimodular bending components except in particular simple problems. Based on the existent simplified model, this paper solves analytically bending thin plates with different moduli in tension and compression. By using the continuity conditions of stress components in unknown neutral layer, we determine the location of the neutral layer, and derive the governing differential equation for deflection, the flexural rigidity, and the internal forces in the thin plate. We also use a circular thin plate with bimodulus to illustrate the application of this solution derived in this paper. The results show that the introduction of different moduli has influences on the flexural stiffness of the bending thin plate.
Dynamic analysis of laminated beams with a embedded damping layer under tension or compression axial load is investigated. Improved Layer-Wise Zig-Zag Beam Theory and Interdependent Kinematic Relation using the governing equations of motion are incorporated to model the laminated beams with a damping layer and a corresponding beam zig-zag finite element is developed. Flexural frequencies and modal loss actors under tension or compression axial load are calculated based on Complex Eigenvalue Method. The effect of the axial tension and compression load on the frequencies and loss factors is discussed.

Computation of flexural ductility of reinforced concrete beam sections has been proposed by taking into account strain rate sensitive constitutive behavior of concrete and steel, confinement of core concrete and degradation of cover concrete during load reversal under earthquake loading. The estimate of flexural ductility of reinforced concrete rectangular sections has been made for a wide range of tension and compression steel ratios for confined and unconfined concrete at a strain rate varying from $3.3{\times}10^{-5}$ to 1.0/sec encountered during normal and earthquake loading. The parametric studies indicated that flexural ductility factor decreases at increasing strain rates. Percentage decrease is more for a richer mix concrete with the similar reinforcement. The confinement effect has marked influence on flexural ductility and increase in ductility is more than twice for confined concrete (0.6 percent volumetric ratio of transverse steel) compared to unconfined concrete. The provisions in various codes for achieving ductility in moment resisting frames have been discussed.
