  • As a substitute of ITO material, carbon nanotube (CNT) is widely studied for transparent conductive film (TCF). Current sheet resistance of CNT-TCF is about 100 ${\Omega}$/sq at 80% transmittance. But CNT-TCF performance in manufacturable level is about 500 ${\Omega}$/sq at 83% based on the Topnanosys Co's result. Therefore, critical issue in CNT-TCF research is to reduce the sheet resistance with manufacturing reliability. In this report, recent developments using CNT-TCF are introduced. Touch panel, transparent LED signboard, transparent speaker and transparent heater are representative examples. Also I describe the future issues and prospect of CNT-TCF for the flexible display.

  • Transparent conducting oxide (TCO) films are widely used as transparent conducting thin film material for application in various fields such as solar cells, optoelectronic devices, heat mirrors and gas sensors, etc. Recently the increased utilization of many transparent electrodes has accelerated the development of inexpensive TCO materials. Indium tin oxide (ITO) film is well-known for TCO materials because of its low resistivity, but there is disadvantage that it is too expensive. ZnO film is cheaper than ITO but it shows thermally poor stability. On the contrary, antimony-doped tin oxide films (ATO) are more stable than TCO films such as Al-doped zinc oxide (AZO) and ITO. Moreover, SnO2 film shows the best thermal and chemical stability, low cost and mechanical durability except the poor conductivity. However, annealing is proved to improve the conductivity of ATO film. Therefore, in this work, antimony (6 wt%) doped tin oxide films to improve the conductivity were deposited on 7059 corning glass by RF magnetron sputtering method for the application to transparent electrodes. In general, of all TCO films, glass is the most commonly selected substrate. However, for future development in flexible devices, glass is limited by its intrinsic inflexibility. In this study, we report the growth and properties of antimony doped tin oxide (ATO) films deposited on PES flexible substrate by using RF magnetron sputtering. The optimization process was performed varying the sputtering parameters, such as RF power and working pressure, and parameter effect on the structural, electrical and optical properties of the ATO films were investigated.

  • As displays become larger and solar cells become cheaper, there is an increasing need for low-cost transparent electrodes. Intensive effort has been made to replace ITO (Indium Tin Oxide) based transparent electrode with cheap and flexible ones. Among those, silver nanowires have got limelight because of its great conductivity and flexibility. Even though the electric property of the Ag nanowire based transparent electrode surpassed ITO, the optical property needs to be improved (lower transmittance, higher haze). Here, we reported transparent electrode based on Ag nanowires and conducting polymer to improve optical properties. The Ag nanowires are coated onto PET films and the resulting transparent electrode film shows $200ohm/{\Box}$ resistance and > 90% optical transmittance.

  • We investigated the crystalline and electrical properties of ZnO thin films for transparent electrode as a function of the oxygen pressures during the deposition. The ZnO thin films were deposited on a flexible teflon substrates by the pulsed laser deposition. From the X-ray diffraction, ZnO films showed c axis oriented ZnO(0002) crystal structure. The FWHM (full width at half maximum) values decreased from $0.51^{\circ}\;to\;0.34^{\circ}$ as the oxygen pressure increased from 0.1 mTorr to 10.0 mTorr showing the improvement of crystallinity. The resistivity and hall mobility of ZnO film deposited at the oxgen pressure of 0.1 mTorr at $200^{\circ}C$ was about $5\times10^{-4}\Omega{\cdot}cm\;and\;20cm^2/V{\cdot}s$, respectively. The optical transmittance of the ZnO films on flexible teflon substrate was found to be above $85\%$.

  • In this study, we report a general method for preparation of a one-dimensional (1D) arrangement of Au nanoparticles on single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) using biologically programmed peptides as structure-guiding 1D templates. The peptides were designed by the combination of glutamic acid (E), glycine (G), and phenylalanine (F) amino acids; peptides efficiently debundled and exfoliated the SWNTs for stability of the dispersion and guided the growth of the array of Au nanoparticles in a controllable manner. Moreover, we demonstrated the superior ability of 1D nanohybrids as flexible, transparent, and conducting materials. The highly stable dispersion of 1D nanohybrids in aqueous solution enabled the fabrication of flexible, transparent, and conductive nanohybrid films using vacuum filtration, resulting in good optical and electrical properties.

  • This paper presents an antenna design that can be applied to flexible transparent conducting film. The antennas shaping PIFA (Planar Inverted F-shpae Antenna) were produced on polyamide substrates, which are flexible. The IZTO/Ag/IZTO multilayer films were used for the antennas and exhibited superior electrical, optical and flexible characteristics. This study compared the transparency and performance of two antennas (IZTO/Ag/IZTO multilayer film, and Ag monolayer film). The operation frequencies were set to 5.18~5.32 GHz of WLAN (802.11a). The performance showed a maximum efficiency and peak gain of 89 % and 5.86 dBi, respectively.

  • Aluminium doped zinc oxide(ZnO:Al) thin film, which is mainly used as a transparent conducting electrode in electronic devices, has many advantages compared with conventional indium tin oxide(ITO). In this paper in order to investigate the possible application of ZnO:Al thin films as a transparent conducting electrode for flexible film-typed dye sensitized solar cell (FT-DSCs), ZnO:Al and ITO thin films were prepared on the polyethylene terephthalate (PET) substrate by r. f. magnetron sputtering method. Specially one-inched FT-DSCs using either a ZnO:Al or ITO electrode were also fabricated separately under the same manufacturing conditions. Some properties of both the FT-DSCs with ZnO:Al and ITO transparent electrodes, such as conversion efficiency, fill factor, and photocurrent were measured and compared with each other. The results showed that by doping the ZnO target with 2 wt% of $Al_2O_3$, the film deposited at discharge power of 200W resulted in the minimum resistivity of $2.2\times10^{-3}\Omega/cm$ and at ransmittance of 91.7%, which are comparable with those of commercially available ITO. Two types of FT-DSCs showed nearly the same tendency of I-V characteristics and the same value of conversion efficiencies. Efficiency of FT-DSCs using ZnO:Al electrode was around 2.6% and that of fabricated FT-DSCs using ITO was 2.5%. This means that ZnO:Al thin film can be used in FT-DSCs as a transparent conducting layer.

  • The composite films were fabricated by air-spray method under the 2 kgf/$cm^2$ pressure using the multi-walled CNTs solution and the nitrocellulose on a 10 ${\mu}m$ polyimide film substrates. We obtained the composite films which were sprayed with the MWCNT dispersion by varying the spray time from 20, 40 and 60sec. The electrical and the optical properties of the sandwiched-structure-composite thin films were investigated by an UV/VIS spectrometer and a Hall Effect equipment. As a result, the optical transmittance of all thin films in the visible range, as well as the electrical conductance shows an available value for the transparent electrode. The carrier concentration and the light transmittance rate for the fabricated sample are between $3.733{\times}10^{10}$ and $6.551{\times}10^{14}cm^{-3}$, around 35 to 95%, respectively.

  • We propose a low temperature sol-gel ZnO/Ag nanowire composite thin film to fulfill low temperature and low cost requirements, which are essential criteria in future flexible electronic devices. In this proposed thin film, Ag nanowire plays the role of electrical conduction, and sol-gel ZnO provides a structural medium with a high visible transmittance. Low temperature restriction in the sol-gel fabrication process prevents sufficient oxidation of Zn acetate precursors, which were solved by a post-coating treatment with ultraviolet light irradiation. Composite thin film formation was performed by spin coating methods with a mixed precursor solution or in a sequential manner. We obtained an average visible transmittance larger than 85% and a sheet resistance smaller than $50{\Omega}/sq$. After optimization in a fabricated composite transparent conductive thin film with the thickness around 100 nm. Similar experimental demonstration in a flexible substrate (polyethyleneterephthalate) was successful, which implies a promising application opportunity of this technology.
