  • A 33-km long sea dyke is being constructed in the Saemangeum area mid-west of Korea to reclaim a surface area of 40,100 ha which includes well-developed tidal flat and two river estuaries. The northern part of the dyke was closed on 10 June 2003, while the southern part was recently closed on 21 April 2006 by plugging two opening gaps of 2.7 km in length. In this study, firstly we review the outlines of key national projects which described marine environments in the Saemangeum area and secondly we present a summary of remarkable changes in marine environments after the closure of the northern dyke, based on marine environmental data collected during 2002-2005. Details in each discipline of the marine environments are presented both in other papers of this special volume and in a series of annual reports of the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and fisheries.

  • Sliding and impact/sliding wear test in room temperature air and water were performed to evaluate the effect of spring shapes on the wear mechanism of a fuel rod. The main focus was to quantitatively compare the wear behavior of a fuel rod with different support springs (i.e. two concaves, a convex and a flat shape) using a ratio of wear volume to worn area (De)-The results indicated that the wear volumes at each spring condition were varied with the change of test environment and loading type. However, the relationship between the wear volume and worn area was determined by only spring shape even though the wear tests were carried out at different test conditions. From the above results, the optimized spring shape which has more wear-resistant could be determined using the analysis results of the relation between the variation of De and worn surface observations in each test condition.

  • The electric contact resistance between ball and disk was measured to estimate the real area of contact under dry and lubrication conditions. The results from the measured constriction resistance using the hypothesis of a single circular contact was compared with those of Hertzian contact theory and hardness. The resistance correlated well with the asperity contact area and friction when the ball slides on the flat disk spreaded with lubricant film. Therefore, the constriction resistance method was useful to identify the lubrication regimes with respect to various loads and speeds. The results of this work will aid in better prediction of lubrication regimes with respect to the operating conditions.

  • A workpiece with a large surface area is likely to be uneven due to form error and waviness. These geometric disturbances can cause inaccurate micro shapes to be formed when micro features are micro-grooved into the surface and cause the resulting workpiece to fail to function as desired. Thus, real-time measurement and compensation is required to guarantee the form accuracy of micro features while machining a workpiece with a large surface area. In this study, a method is suggested for real-time measurement of geometric error for the micro grooving of a large flat surface using a laser displacement sensor. The measurements are demonstrated for the workpieces with large surface areas and the experimental results show that the waviness and form error are well detected.

  • In this paper, an Analog Flat Panel interface(AFPI) which supports for UXGa(Ultar extended Graphics Array)-Compatible TFT LCD Driver is designed. The Proposed AFPI is composed of 8-b ADC, Automatic Gain Control(AGC), Low-Jitter PLL. In order to obtain a high speed and low power consumption, an efficient architecture of 8-bit ADC is proposed, whose FR(Folding Rate) is 8, NFB(Number of Folding Block) is 2, and IR (Interpolating Rate) is 16. We can get high SNDR by adopting distributed track and hold circuits. Also a programmable AGC which is possible to control gain and clamp, and a low-jitter PLL are proposed. The chip has been fabricated with 0.25${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ 1-poly S-metal n-well CMOS technology. The effective chip area is 3.6mm $\times$ 3.2mm and it dissipates about 602㎽ at 2.5V power supply. The INL and DNL are within $\pm$ 1LSB. The measured SNDR is about 43㏈, when the input frequency is 10MHz at 200MHz clock frequency.

  • An encoding technique based on region splitting and vector quantization is proposed for the lower level Laplacian pyramid images. The lower level Laplacian pyramid images have lower variance than higher levels but a great influence on compression ration due to large spatial area. And so from data compression viewpoint, we subdivide them with variance thresholding into two regions such as one called : flat region” and the other “edge region”, and encode the flat region with its mean value and the edge region as vector quantization method. The edge region can be reproduced faithfully and significant improvement on compression ratio can be accomplished with a little degradation of PSNR in spite of the effect of large flat region since the codebook used is generated from the edge region only on from the entire image including the flat region. It can be verified by computer simulation results that proposed method is more efficient in compression ratio and processing time than the conventional encoding technique of vector quantization.

  • A method has been developed, which can be handled easily and economically for inputting depth data of complex bathymetry and enourmous tidal flats such as Mokpo coastal zone. The method is applied to Chungkye Bay, and some hydrodynamic features related with tidal flat are analyzed. Tidal amplification by construction of the sea-dike and sea-walls had been detected not only near Mokpo Harbor but also at Chungkye Bay which is connected with Mokpo Harbor by a narrow channel. This brings about the increase of tidal flat area, which makes the ebb dominance at Chungkye Bay more seriously. This pronounced ebb dominance with the increase of tidal discharge at the channel between Chungkye Bay and Mokpo Harbor, which results in deepened ebb dominance near Mokpo Harbor as well.

  • In the Korean literature, records of systematic gold thread manufacturing such as gold foil(金 箔匠), gold foil bonded with fabrics(付金匠), gold foil bonded with paper materials(金箋紙匠), refining gold(鍊金匠), cutting gold(裁金匠), and making gold thread(絲金匠) can be easily found. We can infer from these literatures that the Korean people used to make gold threads. However, is not existent the gold thread making technique. Thus, a research was done using 67 pieces of gold thread artifacts used in textiles craft of Korea, China and Japan. The purpose of this research was to identify the characteristics of the Korean gold thread by studying the artifacts' form classification, gold foil, glue and the base. First, gold thread is divided into flat gold thread and wrapped gold thread. Wrapped gold thread was made in more various methods such as with a paper on the flat gold thread, metal thread and wrapped gold thread with gold foil on top. Compared to the flat gold thread, wrapped gold thread uses a thread that has a thinner and wider. Through this analysis, even making of the base of the gold threads was different according to the type. Secondly, we looked into the characteristics of materials according to form structure of the gold thread. After analysis of experiment results, we could know that to attach Korean gold thread, glue and the mixture of materials such as Red soil(朱土) was also added. The kinds of the base of gold threads were identified as paper, leather and intestines. Among those materials, for paper, Korea's Dakji, China's Sangpiji(桑皮紙) and Jukji(竹紙) and Japan's Anpiji(雁皮紙) seemed to have all been used, so because of the difference among countries, we can prove that Korea has also produced gold thread. By looking at the research, the base of gold threads and making features hugely vary according to the area.

  • Background and Objectives : Based on histological findings, intracordal cysts are divided in two subtypes : retention cysts and epidermoid cysts. They are typically located in the superficial layer of the lamina propria and appeared as opaque ovoid buldging masses underlying the epithelium. They are characterized by unilateral diminished mucosal wave on stroboscopy. In this article, we report some cases of patients with an oval shaped-yellowish flat cyst. Materials and Method : At the clinic of the department of otorhinolaryngology in Gangnam Severance Hospital, with 3 female complained of hoarseness as subjects, using the stroboscopy we checked preoperative and postoperative vocal cord and operative findings. Surgery was performed under general anesthesia by the senior authors. All patients noted subjectively that their performing voice was improved. Results : During surgery, an oval shaped-yellowish flat cystic lesion was distinguished from normal epithelium. On palpation of this area with microforceps and cottons, the yellowish discharge was noted to move out from the opening of the cyst. In one case, the cyst was ruptured but remove the capsule completely. In other cases, sulcus was noted at the oppsite site. Conclusion : Because of the opening, the cyst was not easy to dissect and remove completely. After the debris was move out, fibrosis around the opening and invaginated epithelium extending into the deeper layers to the fold. The cyst was must removed carefully and completely for improvement of voice quality before evolving into a sulcus vocalis.
