  • The AgGa1-xInxSe2 films are deposited by a flash evaporation method onto pyrex glass substrates at temperatures between 5\ulcorner and 360\ulcorner. The single crystalline films which have X-ray diffraction peak of only (112) plane are preared at substrate temperature above 360\ulcorner. The prepared AgGa 1-xInxSe2 films are high photosensitive. The temperature coefficients of energy gap are found to be (-1.2~-4.0)x10**4 eV/K and (-3.1~-5.2)x10**-4 eV/K, and that of peak energy of spectral photoresponse curve are found to be (-1.1 ~ -3.0)x10**-4 eV/K(50K~100K) and (-2.4~-5.1)x10**-4 eV/K(100K~300K).

  • As a potential alternative to flash memory, HfO2/Al2O3 stacks appear to be a viable option as charge capture layers in charge trapping memories. The paper undertakes a review of HfO2/Al2O3 stacks as charge trapping layers, with a focus on comparing the number, thickness, and post-deposition heat treatment and γ-ray and white x-ray treatment of such stacks. Compared to a single HfO2 layer, the memory window of the 5-layered stack increased by 152.4% after O2 annealing at ±12 V. The memory window enlarged with the increase in number of layers in the stack and the increase in the Al/Hf content in the stack. Furthermore, our comparison of the treatment of HfO2/Al2O3 stacks with varying annealing temperatures revealed that an increased annealing temperature resulted in a wider storage window. The samples treated with O2 and subjected to various γ radiation intensities displayed superior resistance. and the memory window increased to 12.6 V at ±16 V for 100 kGy radiation intensity compared to the untreated samples. It has also been established that increasing doses of white x-rays induced a greater number of deep defects. The optimization of stacking layers along with post-deposition treatment condition can play significant role in extending the memory window.

  • The bacterial enzyme UDP-N-acetylglucosamine enolpyruvyl transferase catalyzes the first committed step of peptidoglycan biosynthesis, i.e., transfer of enolpyruvate from phosphoenolpyruvate to UDP-N-acetyl-glucosamine. We have overexpressed the enzyme from Haemophilus influenzae in Escherichia coli and crystallized it in the apo-form, as well as in a complex with UDP-N-acetylglucosamine and fosfomycin using ammonium sulfate as the precipitant. X-ray diffraction data from a crystal of the apo-form were collected to $2.8{\AA}$ resolution at 293 K. The crystal quality was improved by co-crystallization with UDP-N-acetylglucosamine and fosfomycin. X-ray data to $2.2{\AA}$ have been collected at 100 K from a flash-frozen crystal of the complex. The complex crystals belong to the orthorhombic space group I222 (or $I2_12_12_1$) with unit-cell parameters of a = 63.7, b = 124.5, and $c=126.3{\AA}$. Assuming a monomer of the recombinant enzyme in the crystallographic asymmetric unit, the calculated Matthews parameter ($V_M$) is $2.71{\AA}^3Da^{-1}$ and solvent content is 54.6%.

  • The Ultra Fast Flash Observatory (UFFO) pathfinder is a payload system on-board the Russian satellite Lomonosov, scheduled to be launched in 2013. The main purpose of the UFFO pathfinder is to observe the early photons from Gamma-Ray Bursts. It consists of two instruments. The first instrument is the UFFO Burst Alert X-ray Trigger telescope (UBAT) for the fast-trigger and detection of GRB location, and the second is the Slewing Mirror Telescope (SMT) for the observation of the UV/optical afterglow from the GRB located by the UBAT. It will provide the first-ever systematic study of UV/optical emission far earlier than 1 sec after trigger. We will present the design, fabrication and the preliminary performance of the UBAT.

  • The Ultra Fast Flash Observatory (UFFO) pathfinder consists of the UFFO Burst Alert X-ray Trigger telescope (UBAT) and the Slewing Mirror Telescope (SMT). They are controlled by the UFFO Data Acquisition system (UDAQ). The UBAT triggers Gamma-Ray Bursts(GRBs) and sends the position information to the SMT. The SMT slews the motorized mirror rapidly to the GRB position to take the UV/Optical data within a second after trigger. The UDAQ controls each instrument, communicates with the satellite, collects the data from UBAT and SMT, and transfers them to the satellite. Each instrument uses its own field programmable gates arrays (FPGA) for low power consumption and fast processing, and all functions are implemented in FPGAs without using microprocessors. The entire electronics system of the UFFO pathfinder including architecture, control, and data flow will be presented.

  • Observations of the early photons from evolution of optical afterglows or internal shock provides the crucial clues on the nature of the bursts and environments. Hundreds of GRBs afterglow observations in multi-wavelength region have been made mainly thanks to the fast (~ 60 seconds after the trigger) localisation GRB by Swift and its fast alert to the ground telescope. It helps to improve our understandings tremendously, however many enigmas still remain, such as burst mechanism, transition prompt emission to the afterglow, early optical flash, rise phase of the early optical light curve and some missing afterglows. They could be addressed by fast slewing and multi colour and IR follow-up by future telescopes. The primary aim of UFFO/Lomonosov is to follow up optical fast ever, within a couple of seconds after trigger by onboard X-ray telescope. Its optical FOV is $30{\times}30degrees$. As a key instrument, the Slewing Mirror to redirect the optical beam from GRBs rapidly to the Ritchey-Chretien telescope. The status and launch schedule of the UFFO/Lomonosov and its test performance will be reported and prospects for the next missions will be discussed.

  • The purpose of this research is to investigate the effect of AFm formation on the stiffening process of cement paste. High and low alkali sulfate clinkers were used for the experiments. The flow and stiffening behavior of cement paste was investigated using modified ASTM C403 penetration resistance test and oscillatory shear rheology. X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) was used for phase identification associated with stiffening of the paste. It was found from the results that low alkali clinker mixture produced very strong premature stiffening whereas high alkali clinker mixture did not cause premature stiffening. This is because of the large amount of alkali sulfate present in the clinker. Addition of calcium and sodium chloride to the high alkali clinker mixture caused faster stiffening and set.

  • The ballistic capability of an alumina-rich oxide armor ceramic against a shaped jet was characterized as a function of penetration depth in a layered target structure. The penetration resistance of the ceramic, based upon the determination of penetration velocity, was not equally realized throughout the depth of penetration. It was abnormally low at an early stage of penetration, followed by a sudden increase to reach ~16GPa thereafter. There was no apparent change in such a profile with respect to the lateral size of the specimen. Based upon 2-D flash x-ray radiography and 3-D Hull code simulation, the feasibility of forming a pressure-induced predamnaged zone in front of the jet tip was speculated to foster an increased penetration velocity in the initial stage penetration, resulting in the diminished penetration resistance. The disappearance of such a predamaged zone with penetration was interpreted to restore the resistance of the ceramic in the later penetration stage.

  • In this paper, heat-releasing sheets made of AlN powder and acryl binder as thermoset were prepared using tape casting method. The crystal structure and morphology, the thermal properties as nonvolatile solid content and thermal conductivity, and the surface resistance of heat-releasing sheet were measured by using X-ray diffractometer, field emission-scanning electron microscopy, thermo gravimetric analyzer and laser flash instrument, and surface resistance meter. It was proved that thermal conductivity is greatly affected by the content of binder in heat-releasing sheet. Superior thermal conductivity above 3.5 W/mK and suface resistance were obtained at heat-releasing sheet with above 90% of AlN powder.
