  • The column-oriented database storage is a very advanced model for large-volume data analysis systems because of its superior I/O performance. Traditional data storages exploit row-oriented storage where the attributes of a record are placed contiguously in hard disk for fast write operations. However, for search-mostly datawarehouse systems, column-oriented storage has become a more proper model because of its superior read performance. Recently, solid state drive using MLC flash memory is largely recognized as the preferred storage media for high-speed data analysis systems. In this paper, we introduce fast column-oriented data storage model and then propose a new storage management scheme using a cross compressed replication for the high-speed column-oriented datawarehouse system. Our storage management scheme which is based on two MLC SSD achieves superior performance and reliability by the cross replication of the uncompressed segment and the compressed segment under high workloads of CPU and I/O. Based on the results of the performance evaluation, we conclude that our storage management scheme outperforms the traditional scheme in the respect of update throughput and response time of the column segments.

  • The column-oriented database storage is a very advanced model for large-volume data transactions because of its superior I/O performance. Traditional data storages exploit row-oriented storage where the attributes of a record are placed contiguously in hard disk for fast write operations. However, for search-mostly data warehouse systems, column-oriented storage has become a more proper model because of its superior read performance. Recently, solid state drive using flash memory is largely recognized as the preferred storage media for high-speed data analysis systems. In this research, we propose a new transaction recovery scheme for a column-oriented database environment which is based on a flash media file system. We improved traditional shadow paging schemes by reusing old data pages which are supposed to be invalidated in the course of writing a new data page in the flash file system environment. In order to reuse these data pages, we exploit reused shadow list structure in our column-oriented shadow recovery(CoSR) scheme. CoSR scheme minimizes the additional storage overhead for keeping shadow pages and minimizes the I/O performance degradation caused by column data compression of traditional recovery schemes. Based on the results of the performance evaluation, we conclude that CoSR outperforms the traditional schemes by 17%.

  • As the mobile computers are becoming powerful and are used like general-purpose computers, operating systems for mobile computers also require swap system functionality that utilizes main memory efficiently. Flash memory is widely used as storage device for mobile computers but current linux swap system does not consider flash memory. Swap system is tightly related with process execution since it stores the contents of process in execution. By taking advantage of this characteristics, in this paper, we study a new linux swap system called PASS(Process-Aware Swap System), which allocates the different flash memory blocks to each process. Trace-driven experimental results show that PASS outperforms existing linux swap system with existing garbage collection schemes in terms of garbage collection cost.

  • Due to the characteristics of low power, high durability and high density, NAND flash memory is being heavily used in various type of devices such as USB, SD card, smart phone and SSD. On the other hand, because of another characteristic of flash cell with the limited number of program/erase cycles, NAND flash memory has a short lifetime compared to other storage devices. To overcome the lifetime problem, many researches related to the wear leveling have been conducted. This paper presents a method called a TCB (Tracking Cold Blocks) using more reinforced constraint conditions when classifying cold blocks than previous works. TCB presented in this paper keeps a MCT (Migrated Cold block Table) to manage the enhanced classification process of cold blocks, with which unnecessary migrations of pages can be reduced much more. Through the experiments, we show that TCB reduces the overhead of wear leveling by about 30% and increases the lifetime up to about 60% compared to BET and BST.

  • A USB flash drive is a portable storage device. For its promising moderate price, portability and high capacity USB flash drive users are increasing rapidly. Despite these advantages USB flash drives have critical problems as well. Such as personal information data leakage due to easy loss of the portable device. As these personal information leakage incidents increases various security measure solutions are produced and distributed. Despite these security measures and solutions it is not enough to perfectly protect personal data leakage. Hence the necessity of a more concrete, secure, user-friendly security measure solution is required. In this paper we provide you with portable USB flash drive security solution analysis and provide you with the latest secure, user-friendly security measure solutions.

  • Hand-held devices such as smart phones exploit flash memory based storages to store data for processing jobs. Since the flash memory, non-volatile memory, is able to store mass data, it is required to use the index for processing queries. However, the flash memory has the shortcomings that it does not support the overwrite operation and its write operation is very slow. In this paper, we build the fixed grid file, one of the multi-dimensional spatial index, on a flash memory and evaluate the performance test.

  • Flash memory has several features such as low~power consumption and fast access so that there has been various research on using flash memory as new storage. Especially the Solid State Disk which is composed of flash memory chips has recently replaced the hard disk. At present, SSD adopts the multi-channel and multi-way architecture to exploit advantages of parallel access. In this architecture, data are written on SSD in a unit of a superblock which is composed of multiple blocks in which some blocks are put together. This paper proposes two schemes of selecting, segmenting and re-composing victim superblocks to optimize concurrent processing when a buffer flush occurs. The experimental results show that 35% of superblock- based write operations is reduced by selecting victims and additional 9% by composition of superblock.

  • The fire and explosion properties necessary for waste, safe storage, transport, process design and operation of handling flammable substances are lower explosion limits(LEL), upper explosion limits(UEL), flash point, AIT( minimum autoignition temperature or spontaneous ignition temperature), fire point etc., An accurate knowledge of the combustion properties is important in developing appropriate prevention and control measures fire and explosion protection in chemical plants. In order to know the accuracy of data in MSDSs(material safety data sheets), the flash point of phenol was measured by Setaflash, Pensky-Martens, Tag, and Cleveland testers. And the AIT of phenol was measured by ASTM 659E apparatus. The explosion limits of phenol was investigated in the reference data. The flash point of phenol by using Setaflash and Pensky-Martens closed-cup testers were experimented at $75^{\circ}C$ and $81^{\circ}C$, respectively. The flash points of phenol by Tag and Cleveland open cup testers were experimented at $82^{\circ}C$ and $89^{\circ}C$, respectively. The AIT of phenol was experimented at $589^{\circ}C$. The LEL and UEL calculated by using Setaflash lower and upper flash point value were calculated as 1.36vol% and 8.67vol%, respectively. By using the relationship between the spontaneous ignition temperature and the ignition delay time proposed, it is possible to predict the ignition delay time at different temperatures in the handling process of phenol.

  • The lower flash points for the n-propanol+n-decane flammable mixture were measured by the Tag open-cup apparatus(ASTM D 1310). The experimental results of mixture exhibited the lower flash point than those of pure component in the flash point versus composition curve. The experimental value of the minimum flash point is $27^{\circ}C$ at a mole fraction of n-propanol of 0.71, and the flash point of n-propanol was $28^{\circ}C$. The experimentally obtained data were compared with the values that had been calculated by use of the prediction model, which assumes an ideal solution, and the flash point prediction models based on the van Laar equation were used to estimate the activity coefficients. The predictive curve based on an ideal solution deviated from the experimental data for this system. The experimental results demonstrate a close agreement with the predicted curves, which used the van Laar equation. The average absolute deviation(A.A.D.) from using the van Lau equation is $0.83^{\circ}C$. The methodology proposed here in this paper can thus be applied to incorporate an inherently safer design for chemical processes, such as determining safe storage and handling conditions for flammable solutions.
