  • Biodiesel is manufactured from vegetable oils, etc. in reaction with methanol so that the product of biodiesel may be dangerous due to the methanol remained of it. The risks of methanol remained in biodiesel were studied by measuring flash points and dynamic viscosity to some samples of biodiesel by adding methanol to a certain percentage of. The results of flash points of biodiesel are decreased in accordance with increasing of methanol in biodiesel and also decreasing the dynamic viscosity. It was shown that the risks of explosion of biodiesel are significantly high due to lower flash points resulted from methanol remained in biodiesel fuel as a reactant or adding to biodiesel for reduction of viscosity.

  • As a basic physical property of chemical substances, the flash point is of great importance as far as the prevention of chemical disasters is concerned. The measurement of flash point is not easy. and the number of c(Impounds for which systematic data have been collected pitifully small. Because, a need exists for some means of predicting the flash point of compound for which experimental data are unavailable, not only those which are currently in use or at the production stage, but also, those not compounds which are in the process of synthesis and design. The present research concerns the application of OCD (organic conception diagram) to the association between chemical structures and flash points, and an attempt made to discover a method of predicting the approximate flash point of a compound from its chemical structure alone.

  • For the safe handling of cyclohexanol, this study was investigated the explosion limits of cyclohexanol in the reference data. The flash points and auto-ignition temperatures (AITs) by ignition delay time were experimented. The lower flash points of cyclohexanol by using closed-cup tester were experimented in$60^{\circ}C{\sim}64^{\circ}C$. The lower flash points of cyclohexanol by using open cup tester were experimented in $66^{\circ}C{\sim}68^{\circ}C$. This study measured relationship between the AITs and the ignition delay times by using ASTM E659 tester for cyclohexanol. The AIT of cyclohexanol was experimented as $297^{\circ}C$. The lower explosion limit (LEL) and the upper explosion limit UEL) by the measured the lower flash point and the upper flash point of cyclohexanol were calculated as 0.95 Vol% and 10.7 Vol%, respectively.

  • Explosion limit and flash point are the major combustion properties used to determine the fire and explosion hazards of the flammable substances. In this study, in order to predict upper explosion limits (UEL) for acids and ketones, the upper flash point of these were measured under the VLE (vaporliquid equilibrium) state by using Setaflash closed cup tester (ASTM D3278). The UELs calculated by Antoine equation by using the experimental upper flash point are usually lower than the several reported UELs. From the given results, using the proposed experimental and predicted method, it is possible to research the upper explosion limits of the other flammable substances.

  • To research about the fire spread in Korean apartment house, a full-scale fire test in a four-story apartment was executed. The fire started at the third floor, and originated from overheated cooking oil in the kitchen. The apartment included all combustibles in general house. Through measuring temperature, measuring the concentration of oxygen and observing, we investigated the fire spread inside the apartment house. As a result, we got the data of the time needed for the initiation of fire, the time for fire to spread into each area in the house, and the time required until flash-over was seen. Also we grasped the understanding of the fire spread to the upper floor.

  • As the environmental pollution by the drastic increase of vehicles becomes one of the social major concerns, the method of reducing the harmful exhaust emission is being the subject of interest. Utilization of used frying oil as a raw material for biodiesel production is helpful not only for the stable supply of raw materials but also costing down the biodiesel price. This study was conducted the measurement the combustion and thermal characteristics with mixing ratio of biodiesel/diesel fuel. In this study, flash points and fire points were measured by using Tag Closed cup apparatus and Cleveland open cup apparatus. As the result, flash points, fire points and AIT increased with percentage of more contained biodiesel.

  • Many fire-fighters suffer from the burn injuries, and the severe burns are the most catastrophic injury a person can survive, resulting in pain, emotional stress, and tremendous economic costs. It is important to understand the physiology of burns for prevention from skin burns and a successful treatment of a burn patient. But a few researches have been presented because the complex physical phenomena of our inside body like non-linearity characteristics of human skin make them difficult. Thus in this study, thermal analyses of biological tissues exposed to a flash fire causing severe tissue damage were studied by using a finite difference method based on the Pennes bio-heat equation. The several previous models for skin thermo-physical properties were summarized, and the calculated values with those models of tissue injury were compared with the results obtained by the previous experiment for low heat flux conditions. The skin models with good agreement could be found. Also, the skin burn injury prediction results with the best model for high heat flux conditions by flash flame were suggested.
