A Medium Maturing Variety of Italian Ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.), 'IR605', with High Forage Productivity in Southern Region of Korea

  • This study was conducted at the National Institute of Animal Science from 2010 to 2017. As a variety that is sufficiently productive in the southern regions to replace imported varieties and sufficiently cold-resistant to be cultivated in the central-northern regions, "IR605" was developed and submitted to the Korea Seed & Variety Service in an application for protection. The novel Italian ryegrass variety "IR605" is a diploid with green leaves, a semi-erect growth habit before wintering, and an erect growth habit in the spring. "IR605" was a medium maturing variety with a heading date of around May 15th. "IR605" had a flag leaf width of 9.9 mm, flag leaf length of 26.7 cm, and plant length on the heading date of 100 cm, which was approximately 5 cm longer than "Kowinearly." The stem thickness and ear length of "IR605" are 0.08 mm thicker and 0.5 cm longer than those of "Kowinearly", respectively. The cold-resistance of "IR605" was weaker than that of "Kowinearly", but strong enough to be cultivated in Pyeongchang, Gangwon province. The dry matter yield of "IR605" (9,308 kg/hectare) was 20% higher than that of "Kowinearly", which was further pronounced in the southern region of Haenam, where there was a 52% increased (p < 0.05). The in vitro dry matter digestibility of "IR605" was 68.4% at which was slightly higher than that of "Kowinearly", The total digestible nutrients was 58.5%, which was slightly lower than "Kowinearly". Overall, the feed quality characteristics of "IR605" were similar to those of "Kowinearly".

  • 본 시험은 이탈리안 라이그라스 극조생종 품종을 육성하기 위하여 2001년부터 2011년까지 국립축산과학원 초지사료과에서 수행되었다. 이탈리안 라이그라스 신품종 그린팜 2호는 2 배체 작물로 엽은 녹색이며, 월동 전 초형은 반직립형, 봄의 초형은 직립형이다. 그린팜 2호는 4월 28일경에 출수하는 극조생종 품종이다. 또한, 그린팜 2호는 플로리다 80 보다 지엽폭이 0.6 mm 넓고, 지엽의 길이가 1 cm 짧으며, 출수기의 초장은 94 cm로 플로리다 80 보다 1 cm 정도 작다. 줄기 두께는 플로리다 80 보다 0.7 mm로 굵고 이삭 길이는 플로리다 80 보다 2.2 cm 짧았다. 그린팜 2호의 건물수량은 11,452 kg/ha로서 플로리다 80과 대등하였다. 그린팜 2호의 상대적 사료가치는 플로리다 80이 97인데 비해 그린팜 2호는 114로 월등히 높고 in vitro 소화율이 70.6%, 가소화양분총량(TDN)이 63.9%로서 플로리다 80 보다 각각 1.6, 2.8% 높았고, 산성세제불용섬유(ADF)와 중성세제 불용섬유(NDF)는 31.7 및 52.6%로서 플로리다 80 보다 각각 3.5% 및 6.4% 낮았다.

  • "Hwasan 103" is a new cold-tolerant Italian ryegrass(Lo1ium multiflorum L.) variety developed by theNational Livestock Research Institute(NLR1) in 1999. To develop a cold-tolerant variety of Italianryegrass(Lo1ium multiflorum L.), cold-tolerant clones survived under - 13 - - 14$^{\circ}$C of minimum average airtemperature(MAAT) in January were selected at Hwachun, Kwangwon Province in 1995. Five clones ofselected clones were polycrossed for seed production by NLRI, RDA in 1996."Hwasan 103" was diploid variety, green in leaf color and broad in flag leaf width. Also it hassemi-prostrate and medium growth habit in late autumn and in early spring, respectively. "Hwasan 103" wasexcellent in lodging tolerance at harvesting time. First heading date of "Hwasan 103" was 14th May, it wassimilar to that of Marshall. Expecially, "Hwasan 103" survived about 50-70% under - 10- - 12'C ofMAAT in January, so it could be cold-tolerant variety that can be safely cultivated in regions higher than -9$^{\circ}$C of MAAT in January. Compared with Marshall "Hwasan 103" showed 3% higher fresh yield (57.8MTper ha) and it showed 2% higher dry matter yield (11.OMT per ha).   • Improvement of cold-tolerance of Italian ryegrass(Lo1ium multiflorum L.) is an important breeding objectivefor enlargement of cultivation area in Korea. To develop the cold-tolerant variety of Italian ryegrass,cold-tolerant clones survived under - 13- - 14$^{\circ}$C of minimum average air temperature in January wereselected in the area of Dun Nae, Kwangwon Province. The 5 lines of Italian ryegrass clones selected werepolycrossed for seed production. Synthetic seeds were examined on growth characters and forage productionsin Suwon from 1996 to 1998, in Unbong 1997 and in Younchun 1998, respectively. The growth charactersand forage productions of Italian ryegrass variety named as "Hwasan 101" were summarized as follow ;ltalian ryegrass variety, Hwasan 101 was tetraploid and showed semi-prostrate growth habit in autumn andwas not only dark green in leaf color and broad in flag leaf width but also excellent in leafiness. Also, itshowed low plant height at first heading date of 20th May and excellent lodging tolerance. Expecially,Hwasan 101 in all trial regions was 80 -90% of winter survivals that was higher than 60 -90% of Florida80 and Marshall varieties. Therefore we estimate that Hwasan 101 can be cultivated in regions that is higherthan -9$^{\circ}$C in minimum average air temperature and lower than 400m in sea level. In forage production ofHwasan 101, fresh weight and total digestible nutrient(TDN) yield were 66,940 and 6,551kghq and drymatter yield was 10,050kgha. In conclusion, Italian ryegrass, Hwasan 101 was medium and late maturingvariety but excellent in cold-tolerance, lodging-tolerance, leafiness, and forage production.(Key words : Italian ryegrass, Cold tolerance, New variety)ian ryegrass, Cold tolerance, New variety)

Growth Characteristics and Yield of New Variety Italian Ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.), "Oasis"

  • The experiment aim to breed an early-maturing variety of Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.). It was conducted at the Grassland and Forage Crops Division, National Institute of Animal Science, RDA, Cheonan, Korea, from 2022 to 2023. The new variety named "Oasis" is a diploid with green leaves and has a semi-erect growth habit in late fall, and an erect growth habit in early spring. With a heading date of May 10, Oasis is categorized as an early-maturing variety. Compared with the "Florida80" as a control variety, Oasis's flag leaf was 1 mm wider and 2 cm shorter, while the plant length was 7.8 cm longer. Additionally, the ear of Oasis was 1.2 cm longer than that of Florida80, and it showed lodging resistance. The dry matter yield of Oasis (8,805 kg/ha) was higher than that of Florida80. The total digestible nutrient and crude protein contents of Oasis were 64.5%, and 9.3%, respectively, which were 1.1% and 0.6% higher than those of Florida80, respectively. The neutral and acid detergent fiber contents in Oasis were 54.2% and 30.8%, respectively, which was 1.9% and 1.4% lower than those of Florida80, respectively. These results indicate that Oasis has good dry matter yield in the most of region and especially, middle and northern region of South Korea.

  • Feeding is an interaction between a child and caregiver, and feeding difficulty is an umbrella term encompassing all feeding problems, regardless of etiology, severity, or consequences, while feeding disorder refers to an inability or refusal to eat sufficient quantities or variety of food to maintain adequate nutritional status, leading to substantial consequences, including malnutrition, impaired growth, and possible neurocognitive dysfunction. There are 6 representative feeding disorder subtypes in young children: infantile anorexia, sensory food aversion, reciprocity, posttraumatic type, state regulation, and feeding disorders associated with concurrent medical conditions. Most feeding difficulties are nonorganic and without any underlying medical condition, but organic causes should also be excluded from the beginning, through thorough history taking and physical examination, based on red-flag symptoms and signs. Age-appropriate feeding principles may support effective treatment of feeding difficulties in practice, and systematic approaches for feeding difficulties in young children, based on each subtype, may be beneficial.

  • In order to observe the factors affecting light utilization efficiency in the canopy of a rice crop grown in reclaimed saline areas in Korea, 22 varieties of rice were cultured at the average salt concentration of 6.05mmhos/cm $25^{\circ}C$, (0.39%) in saline soils and non-saline silty loam soils. The inhibition of tillering ability by salt damage at the maximum tillering stage was greater than to growth in height. A significant direct correlation was observed between both ratios and salt concentration with each variety. In the salty areas the length of the flag leaf of the maturing stage showed a positive correlation with the production of rough rice while other living leaf showed a negative correlation. LAI of maturing stage was less in the salty area than in the non-salty area, while the former showed higher ratio in net assimilation and translocation to head with greater RGR before and after the heading stage.

오차드그라스 신품종 '럭키원'의 생육특성과 수량성 (Growth Characteristics and Forage Productivity of New Orchardgrass (Dactylis glomerata L.) Variety, 'Lucky One')

  • 전국에서 수집된 오차드그라스 재래종들 중 생육특성 및 내재해성이 우수한 계통을 선발하여 육성된 4계통을 집단 교배(polycross)하여 생산된 합성계통을 '합성35호'라 하고 이를 2008년 천안에서 생산력 검정시험을 수행하였다. 2012년부터 2014년까지 3년 동안 천안, 횡성, 진주 및 제주 등 4 지역에서 지역적응성 검정을 실시하여 생육특성 및 수량성을 조사하였다. 2014년 직무육성 신품종 선정심의회에서 생육특성과 수량성이 우수한 '합성 35호'를 신품종 '럭키원'으로 명명하였다. '럭키원'의 주요 특성을 요약하면 다음과 같다. '럭키원'의 생육형태는 중간형이며, 잎은 담녹색이고, 출수기에 지엽 길이는 표준품종인 암바 보다 짧으며, 상부 절간장은 길고 풍엽성이 양호하였다. '럭키원'은 암바에 비해 출수기는 5월 11일로 표준품종인 암바 보다 2일이 늦으며, 출수기의 초장은 87 cm로 3 cm 길었다. 내습성과 내병성은 '럭키원'이 암바에 비하여 비교적 강하였으며, 녹병은 럭키원이 암바 보다 약간 강한 편이었다. '럭키원'의 ha당 건물수량은 16,191 kg으로 암바 보다 38% 많았으며, 특히 횡성지역에서 증수하였다. '럭키원'의 건물 소화율은 암바에 비해 높았으며 조단백질 함량은 11.3%로 약간 높았다.
