  • Diallel analysis was conducted with FI's derived from crossing in all combinations without reciprocals among six rice varieties; three tropical japonica and three temperate japonica varieties, with different traits associated with panicle and flag leaf. Epistasis was observed in the number of primary branches (PB) per panicle and of spikelets per panicle, while flag leaf length, flag leaf color, PB length and neck node thickness were explained with the additive-dominance model. The estimated genetic mode of flag leaf length and PB length was a positive complete dominance model with high heritability, and that of flag leaf color and neck node thickness was an incomplete dominance model. In particular, tropical japonica varieties with low-tillering and heavy-panicle appear to have higher number of dominant genes for flag leaf length and PB length than temperate japonica varieties.

  • Varietal differences, heritabilities and the relationships of the characters including peduncle size of barley cultivars (Hordeum vulgare L.) were studied. Significant difference of the peduncle size was observed among the varieties. Flag leaf size and flag leaf sheath length also showed significant differences among varieties. Heritabilities of broad sense for peduncle length and diameter were 0.9638 and 0.5652. Heritabilities for flag leaf sheath length, flag leaf length and flag leaf width were 0.8143, 0.7929 and 0.8980, respectively. The peduncle length was significantly correlated with peduncle diameter, stem length, flag leaf sheath length, flag leaf length and kernels per spike. However, no relationship existed between peduncle length and spike length.

  • Typhoon "MAEMI", happened in September 2003, hit the great damage to Gyeongnam province area. Especially, rice plant was lodged or severe leaf damage was caused. This study was conducted to find out the extents of leaf damage among different rice cultivars, and to evaluate rice yield and eating quality due to leaf damage after typhoon. Rice cultivars torn off over half of the flag leaf length (FLL) were one medium-late maturing cultivar (Donginl), medium maturing cultivar (Yeonganbyeo), eight early maturing cultivars (Samcheonbyeo, Jounghwnbyeo, Munjangbyeo, Taebongbyeo, Odaebyeo, Samhaegbyeo, Sobaegbyeo, Sinunbongbyeo), two long-il type cultivars (Samgangbyeo, Namcheonbyeo), and three special use cultivars (Heukseonchalbyeo, Jinbuchalbyeo, Yangjobyeo). Cultivars torn off below 1/10 FLL were eight medium-late maturing cultivars (Chucheongbyeo, Daecheongbyeo, Saechu cheongbyeo, Donganbyeo, Daeyabyeo, Hwamyeongbyeo, 방eongsanbyeo, Dongjinbyeo) and two medium maturing cultivays (Donghaebyeo, Gumobyeo2). The rest cultivars were tore off by 1/10∼1/2 ELL. In yield components, the longer was flag leaf damage, the lower was ripened grain ratio, grain weight and brown/rough rice ratio, which was severly impacted to late than to ordinary season cultivation. However, rice yield did not decrease up to tearing by 1/10 ELL. Head rice ratio decreased from flag leaf tearing over 1/10 ELL in late season cultivation. The longer was flag leaf damage, the lower was eating quality, which could not show significantly different.

  • Number and percentage of diseased area of leaf blast lesions formed on different leaf location were mostly distributed from the flag leaf(n-1) to the 3rd leaf from the top(n-3) in Tongil line rice varieties and on the 2nd leaf from the top(n-2) in Japonica type rice varieties. Especially leaf lesions of Nopung which was more susceptible to leaf blast among Ton1 line rice varieties were mostly distributed on flag leaf. Relation between the degree of lesion distribution and level of fertilizer was more clear with an increase of fertilizer quantity. Leaf blast lesions of rice varieties were generally distributed from the flag leaf to the with leaf from the top but mainly those at flag leaf and the 2nd leaf from the top were found to be most responsible for inoculum source of panicle blast after booting stage. Increase of the conidia formation was resulted from fluctuation of temperature$(24^{\circ}C\~16^{\circ}C)$ in low temperature range after booting stage and many inoculum sources were supplied on panicles until the end of September without impeding dispersal from leaf blast lesions as an inoculum source of panicle blast.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the varietal differences in leaf senescence and the relationship between leaf senescence and photosynthesis during ripening stage of rice. During grain filling period, leaf senescence was evaluated by SPAD readings (an indirect indicator of chlorophyll content) for 3 rice varieties (SNU-SG1, Hwaseongbyeo, Nampungbyeo). SPAD value of flag leaf and 2nd leaf of SNU-SG1 were much higher than the other varieties and the leaves of SNU-SG1 also showed a tendency of delayed senescence as compared to the other varieties. Photosynthesis at light saturation (Pmax) of flag, 2nd and 3rd leaf in SNU-SG1 during grain filling period were much higher than Hwaseongbyeo and Nampungbyeo. The Pmax of the flag leaf in SNU-SG1 was especially higher over 20% than the other varieties. It was due to its higher mesophyll conductance and stomatal conductance as compared to the other varieties. Pmax, stomatal conductance and mesophyll conductance had positive correlation with SPAD value and nitrogen concentration of leaves. In conclusion, the stay green characteristics of SNU-SG1 would contribute to increasing the grain yield through the improved photosynthesis during grain filling.

  • Two cultivars which are glutinous (Hawcheongchalbyeo) and non-glutinous (Hawcheongbyeo) near isogenic line of rice, were used for this study. The objective of this experiment was to gain the basic information for increasing grain yield of waxy rice by means of source and sink size control. In both Hwacheongbyeo and Hawcheongchalbyeo, the trend of decrease in total and average spikelet weight was ranked as follows; removal of penultimate leaf< removal of flag leaf< removal of flag leaf and 3ya leaf from the top < removal of flag leaf and penultimate leaf < removal of flag leaf, penultimate leaf, and 3rd leaf from the top. The reduction yale of total and average spikelet weight per panicle of Hwacheongbyeo was higher than those of Hwacheongchalbyeo according to the removal of flag leaf, penultimate leaf, and 3rd leaf from the top. In both cultivars, high-density grain ratio and grain filling ratio of the primary branches were higher Hun those of the secondary branches by leaf clipping treatment. The spikelet number and total spikelet weight per pinicle in both Hwacheongbyeo and Hwacheongchalbyeo were decreased by removal of spikelets on branches compared with control, whereas average spikelet weight and grain filling ratio were increased. The increase rate of average spikelet weight of Hwacheongchalbyeo was much higher than that of Hwacheongbyeo by sink size control. High-density grain ratio by removal of spikelets on branches was higher in Hwacheongchalbyeo, but filled grain ratio was higher in Hwacheongbyeo.

  • This experiment was conducted to study about nutrient absorption of flag leaf and chaff of rice plant different transplanting date with elevations. Heading stage was delayed by destructive cold temperature or late transplanting. Plant analyses revealed that above poor plants also had higher total nitrogen content, but ower silicate in the flag leaf and sterile chaff. Total nitrogen and silica contents to accumulated in flag leaf between yield was significant high correlation. The chaff of late transplanting and sterility was high total nitrogen. Relationship between silicate absorption and total nitrogen of chaff was significant high correlation. Ripening temperature after heading stage was influenced total nitrogen of chaff. Phosphate, potassium, calssium and silicate contents of chaff increased hight ripening temperature but total nitrogen decreased. Therefore, inorganic element contents of chaff was closely connected with grain sterility.

  • The effect of leaf spray ($80{\ell}$ of 100 times diluted solution per 10a) of three liquid complex fertilizers (Compresal 1 and 2. and 3P) on rice (var, Minehikari) at 10 days before and after heading and 20 days after heading in a farmer's field was investigated by yield components and flag leaf analysis. 1. Leaf spray significantly increased filled grain ratio (at 10% level) and harvest index (at 5% level) suggesting significant yeild increase in uniform field condition. 2. Phosphorus content of flag leaf was in deficient range and increased by leaf spray while iron content was decreased indicating that liquid complex fertilizer supplied phosphorus which ratards iron translocation to the upper leaves. 3. Higher manganese content in flag leaf by leaf spray (significant at 5% level) suggests that phosphorus stimulates manganese translocation to the upper leaves resulting in favorable Fe/Mn balance. 4. Nitrogen concentration in flag leaf was in the insufficient range suggesting that nitrogen in liquid complex fertilzer had to be a nitrogen supply source. 5. In flag leaf calcium concentration was increased by leaf spray but that of boron and zinc was decreased.

  • One hundred winter wheat cultivars obtained from the world collections in Korea were planted in 1982. Stomatal frequency of flag leaf of these cultivars were measured, and among these 21 cultivars which showed different stomatal frequency were selected to investigate the relationship of their stomatal frequencies and other characters such as culm length, heading date and characters related to leaf. Stomatal frequency of flag leaf of 100 cultivars different significantly, ranging from 51 to 90 stomata mm$^{-2}$ for the adaxial and 35 to 65 for the abaxial surfaces of leaf. Stomatal frequency was always greater on the adaxial than on the abaxial surface. Mean ratios (adaxial/abaxial) were 1.5 for the flag leaf and 1.3 for the from second to fouth leaves. Among 21 cultivars examined, stomatal size which measured guard cell length varied from 38.5 to 46.6$\mu$ for adaxial surface and from 39.4 to 49.4$\mu$ for abaxial. A negative correlation was obtained between stomatal frequency and its size. Stomatal frequency decreased from flag (L$_1$) to lower leaves, progresively. Stomatal frequency on L$_1$ sheath was compared to those on L$_3$ and L$_4$ abaxial surface of leaf. More stomatal frequency on top and center of adaxial surface showed than that on basal part of a leaf but the abaxial surface resulted in reverse of adaxial one. Cultivars with high stomatal frequency on flag leaf showed higher stomatal frequency on the other leaves and sheaths. Positive correlation between stomatal frequency and other characters such as, culm length, heading date and chlorophyll content showed statistical significance, whearas it revealed the negative correlation of stomatal frequency with leaf weight, leaf area and stomatal aperture. However, no relation appeared between stomatal frequency and leaf vein.

  • This experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of the various stage of growth on dry matter yield and chmical composition of forage oat(Avena sativa. L.). Seeds were planted on March 13 1993 on the Livestock Experimental Farm Keiymung junior college at keongsan Keongsangbukdo. Oat plant were harvested at various stages of maturity while the oat was in the premature stages. 1. Whole plant dry matter increased with advancing maturity. It was 11.8, 12.3, 14.9, 25.6 and 28.8% at before flag leaf emerged, flag leaf emerged, heads emerged, milk and dough stage., respectively. Dry matter increased very little during from before flag leaf emerged to heads emerged, after which it increased rapidly until the plant was dough stage. 2. Leaf weight ratio decreased with advancing maturity from before flag leaf emerged to dough, varied fmm 58 to 1 1%. Grain(with lemma, palea) increased with advancing maturity from heads emerged to dough, varied from 7 to 43%. 3. The content of cmde protein decreased during the stages of growth until milk(P<.OS), and then changed very little with advancing maturity. 4. The content of NDF and ADF increased rapidly during the early growth period until heading(P<.05) and then decreased due to the increase in carbohydrate storage in the grain. 5. The dry matter yields per ha increased with advancing maturity, it was 2,420, 4,380, 7,190, 13,130 and 14,530kg at before flag leaf emerged, flag leaf emerged, heads emerged, milk and early dough, respectively. Significant difference has been obtained among stages of growth(P< .05). 6. According to the results obtained from this study, it is suggested that milk stage of maturity is higher in dry matter yields would be recomendable for spring oat for silage.
