In the present study, the fracture toughness of U-shaped notches made of aluminum alloy Al7075-T6 under combined tension/out-of-plane shear loading conditions (mixed mode I/III) is studied by theoretical and experimental methods. In the experimental part, U-notched test samples are loaded using a previously developed fixture under mixed mode I/III loading and their load-carrying capacity (LCC) is measured. Then, due to the presence of considerable plasticity in the notch vicinity at crack initiation instance, using the Equivalent Material Concept (EMC) and with the help of the point stress (PS) and mean stress (MS) brittle failure criteria, the LCC of the tested samples is predicted theoretically. The EMC equates a ductile material with a virtual brittle material in order to avoid performing elastic-plastic analysis. Because of the very good match between the EMC-PS and EMC-MS combined criteria with the experimental results, the use of the combination of the criteria with EMC is recommended for designing U-notched aluminum plates in engineering structures. Meanwhile, because of nearly the same accuracy of the two criteria and the simplicity of the PS criterion relations, the use of EMC-PS failure model in design of notched Al7075-T6 components is superior to the EMC-MS criterion.

The purpose of this study was to make the stress distribution produced by simulated different load under two types of internal connection implant system (stepped and tapered type) by means of 3D finite element analysis, The finite element model was designed with the parallel placement of the one fixtures ($4.0mm{\times}11.5mm$) with reverse buttress thread on the mandibular 1st molar. Two models were loaded with 200 N magnitude in the vertical direction on the central position of the crown, the 1.5 mm and 3 mm buccal offset point from the central position of the fixture. The oblique load was applied at the angle of $30^{\circ}$ on the crown surface. Von Mises stress value was recorded and compared in the fixture-bone interface in the bucco-lingual dimension. The results were as follows; 1. The loading conditions of two internal connection implant systems (stepped and tapered type) were the main factor affecting the equivalent bone strain, followed by the type of internal connections. 2. The stepped model had more mechanical stability with the reduced max. stress compared to $11^{\circ}$ tapered models under the distributed oblique loading. 3. The more the contact of implant-abutment interface to the inner wall of implant fixture, the less stress concentration was reduced.

The purpose of this study was to assess the loading distributing characteristics of implant prosthesis of internal connection system(ITI system) according to position and direction of load, under vertical and inclined loading using finite element analysis (FEA). The finite element model of a synOcta implant and a solid abutment with $8^{\circ}$ internal conical joint used by the ITI implant was constructed. The gold crown for mandibular first molar was made on solid abutment. Each three-dimensional finite element model was created with the physical properties of the implant and surrounding bone. This study simulated loads of 200N at the central fossa in a vertical direction (loading condition A), 200N at the outside point of the central fossa with resin filling into screw hole in a vertical direction (loading condition B), 200N at the centric cusp in a $15^{\circ}$ inward oblique direction (loading condition C), 200N at the in a $30^{\circ}$ inward oblique direction (loading condition D) or 200N at the centric cusp in a $30^{\circ}$ outward oblique direction (loading condition E) individually. Von Mises stresses were recorded and compared in the supporting bone, fixture, and abutment. The following results have been made based on this study: 1. Stresses were concentrated mainly at the ridge crest around implant under both vertical and oblique loading but stresses in the cancellous bone were low under both vertical and oblique loading. 2. Bending moments resulting from non-axial loading of dental implants caused stress concentrations on cortical bone. The magnitude of the stress was greater with the oblique loading than with the vertical loading. 3. An offset of the vertical occlusal force in the buccolingual direction relative to the implant axis gave rise to increased bending of the implant. So, the relative positions of the resultant line of force from occlusal contact and the center of rotation seems to be more important. 4. In this internal conical joint, vertical and oblique loads were resisted mainly by the implant-abutment joint at the screw level and by the implant collar. Conclusively, It seems to be more important that how long the distance is from center of rotation of the implant itself to the resultant line of force from occlusal contact (leverage). In a morse taper implant, vertical and oblique loads are resisted mainly by the implant-abutment joint at the screw level and by the implant collar. This type of implant-abutment connection can also distribute forces deeper within the implant and shield the retention screw from excessive loading. Lateral forces are transmitted directly to the walls of the implant and the implant abutment mating bevels, providing greater resistance to interface opening.

The purpose of this study was to compare the distributing pattern of stress according to the types of occlusal load on the finite element models of the splinted implant prostheses. The finite element model was designed with the parallel placement of two fixtures ($4.0mm{\times}11.5mm$) on mandibular first and second molars. The cemented crowns for mandibular first and second molars were made. Three-dimensional finite element model was created with the components of the implant, surrounding bone and cemented crowns. Two types of occlusal load, the point load and the surface load within 0.5 mm radius circle, were applied to the finite element models with 200N magnitude in axial(along the long axis of the implant and oblique(angulation of $30^{\circ}$ to the long axis) directions perpendicular to cuspal incline. Loads were positioned from the center of central fossa and to distance of 2 mm and 4 mm apart from the center of central fossa. Von-Mises stresses were recorded and compared in the fixtures and sections. The results were as following : 1. Under axial loading at the central fossa, the stress was distributed along the fixture except for the apical portion, not relative to both point & surface contacts. 2. With offset distance increasing, the highest stresses were concentrated in the neck portion of the fixture. 3. The maximum von Mises stress under the oblique load was greater than that under the axial load. 4. Under the oblique load, the highest stress were concentrated in the buccal side and lingual neck portion of the fixture with offset distance increasing. The results had a tendency to increase the stress on the neck portion of fixture with the offset and oblique loads increasing. The design of occlusal scheme should be allowed to distribute stress axially in maximum intercuspation and to decrease the angulation of cuspal incline.

Purpose : This study was designed to evaluate the influence of implant abutment materials on detorque value and screw joint stability before and after dynamic fatigue test. Materials & Methods : The external hexagonal fixture and three different groups of abutment (titanium abutments, zirconia abutments, and UCLA abutments) were used. The detorque value before loading and after loading (cyclic loading up to $10^5$ cycles) of the abutment screw were measured. Result : 1. There was no significant difference in detorque value before loading among the each group. 2. There was no significant difference in detorque value after loading among the each group. 3. Detorque values before and after cyclic loading in each group were not significantly different. 4. There was no significant difference in loss percentage of removal torque before loading among the each group. 5. There was no significant difference in loss percentage of removal torque after loading among the each group. 6. There was no significant difference in loss percentage of removal torque according to loading among the each group. Conclusion : Short term screw loosening of three types of abutment was not significantly different. When bite force was applied, there was no significant difference in screw loosening between before loading and after loading.

Fatigue or overload can result in mechanical problems of implant components. The mechanical strength in the implant system is dependent on several factors, such as screw and fixture diameters, material, and design of the fixture-abutment connection and abutment. In these factors, the last rules the strength and stability of the fixture-abutment assembly. There have been some previous reports on the mechanical strength of the fixture-abutment assembly with the compressive bending test or short-term cyclic loading test. However, it is restrictive to predict the long-term stability of the implant system with them. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the influence of the design of the fixture-abutment connection and abutment on the mechanical strength and failure mode by conducting the endurance limit test as well as the compressive bending strength test. Tests were performed according to a specified test(ISO/FDIS 14801) in 4 fixture-abutment assemblies of the Osstem implant system: an external butt joint with Cemented abutment (group BJT), an external butt joint with Safe abutment (group BJS), an internal conical joint with Solid abutment (group CJO), and an internal conical joint with ComOcta abutment (group CJT). The following conclusions were drawn within the limitation of this study. Compressive bending strengths were decreased in order of group BJS(1392.0N), group CJO(1261.8N), group BJT(1153.2N), and group CJT(1110.2N). There were no significant differences in compressive bending strengths between group BJT and group CJT(P>.05). Endurance limits were decreased in order of group CJO(600N), group CJT(453N), group BJS(360N), and group BJT(300N). 3. Compressive bending strengths were influenced by the connection and abutment design of the implant system, however endurance limits were affected more considerably by the connection design.

PURPOSE. Early loading of implant can be determined by excellent primary stability and characteristic of implant surface. The implant system with recently improved surface can have load application 4-6 weeks after installing in maxilla and mandible. This study evaluated the effect of healing period to the stability of hydrophilic tapered-type implant at maxillary posterior area. MATERIALS AND METHODS. This study included 30 patients treated by hydrophilic tapered-type implants (total 41 implants at maxilla) and classified by two groups depending on healing period. Group 1 (11 patients, 15 implants) was a control group and the healing period was 12 weeks, and Group 2 (19 patients, 26 implants) was test group and the healing period was 6 weeks. Immediately after implant placement, at the first impression taking, implant stability was measured using Osstell Mentor. The patients also took periapical radiographs after restoration delivery, 12 months after restoration and final followup period. The marginal bone loss around the implants was measured using the periapical radiographs. RESULTS. All implants were survived and success rate was 97.56%. The marginal bone loss was less than 1mm after 1 year postoperatively except the one implant. The stabilities of the implants were not correlated with age, healing period until loading, insertion torque (IT), the diameter of fixture and the location of implant. Only the quality of bone in group 2 (6 week) was correlated with the stability of implant. CONCLUSION. Healing period of 6 weeks can make the similar clinical prognosis of implants to that of healing period of 12 weeks if bone quality is carefully considered in case of early loading.
Experimental investigations of interlaminar mechanical properties for carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) laminates were carried out using aramid fiber ($Kevlar^{(R)}$-29 1000d) and carbon fiber (TR40-1K 612d, Mitsubishi Rayon) stitching. Various carbon fiber (CF) stitch densities were used to prepare a number of CF stitched CFRP laminates for double cantilever beam (DCB) tests. An insert tongue-type loading fixture, developed by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (formerly the National Aerospace Laboratory of Japan), was also employed in the DCB test. Interlaminar tension tests were carried out under an out-of-plane directional loading using a single CF stitch thread in the CFRP laminates. The DCB test results clarified that the relationship between the volume fractions of the CF stitch thread ($V_{ft}$) and mode I critical energy release rate ($G_{Ic}$) showed a mostly linear function with a higher gradient than that of the $Kevlar^{(R)}$ stitched CFRP laminates. The CF stitched CFRP tension test results indicated that the consumption energy per unit area ($E_i$) was larger than that of $Kevlar^{(R)}$ stitched CFRP laminates.

This study discusses the issues related to the accuracy of deflection measurement in the testing of FRC. Some deflection methods may include large extraneous deformations. such as local crushing at the loading points, elastic and inelastic deformations of the loading fixture, etc. A faulty load-deflection curve will be obtained if an unstable deflection measuring system is used, and incorrect toughness evaluation can be reached on the basis of this faulty curve. In this paper, the discussion will focus on the effects of the deflection measuring system on both the measurement of the load-deflection response of FRC and the evaluation of FRC toughness. It is observed that ASTM toughness indices which is based on measuring deflection at first cracking is influenced significantly by extraneous deformation in deflection measurement. But extraneous deformation in deflection measurement result in negligible errors in toughness evaluation using JSCE and JCI definition. However, in order to evaluate toughness accuracy, it is desirable to use net load-deflection curve eliminated extraneous deformation.

An energy based crack growth model is developed in this study to simulate the propagation of top-down cracking in asphalt pavements. A viscoelastic fracture mechanics approach, generalized J integral, is employed to model the crack growth of asphalt concrete. Laboratory fatigue crack propagation tests for three different asphalt mixtures are performed at various load levels, frequencies and temperatures. Disk-shaped specimens with a proper loading fixture and crack growth monitoring system are selected for the tests. It is observed from the tests that the crack propagation model based on the generalized J integral is independent of load levels and frequencies, while the traditional Paris' law model based on stress intensity factor is dependent of loading frequencies. However, both models are unable to take care of the temperature dependence of the mixtures. The fatigue crack propagation model proposed in this study has a good agreement between experimental and predicted crack growth lives, which implies that the energy based J integral could be a better parameter to describe fatigue crack propagation of viscoelastic materials such as asphalt mixtures.
