  • Recently, available interests concerning the biologic significance of the extracellular matrix and proliferating cells associated with periodontal disease has been increased. The distribution or expression of cellular proliferation by PCNA, macrophage detection by ${\alpha}$-l-antichymotrypsin, fibronectin playing a important role in host defence mechanisms indirectly, and transglutaminase that cross linked to fibronectin and stimulate fibrin stabilization were studied in inflammed and healthy gingiva. The excised tissue samples were fixed neutral formalin for 24 hours, embedded with paraffin, sectioned at 4-61lffi in thickness, and immunohistochemically processed by LSAB method. The positive reaction to PCNA was localized in the suprabasal and basal layer of inflammed gingiva and an increasing reactivity was observed than healthy gingiva. ${\alpha}$-I-antichymotrypsin positive cells were localized in the basal layer of inflammed gingiva, and there was no or rare positive cells in healthy gingiva. The positive reaction to fibronectin in inflammed gingiva was more than healthy gingiva,"and shown in the connective tissue subjacent to basement membrane of epithelium and in the periphery of the collagen fiber bundles. The positive cells by transglutaminase in inflammed gingiva were noted in suprabasal, spinous, and keratin layer of epithelium, and slightly increased in the capillaries of connective tissues. But the results of this study demonstrated in vitro reaction. Therefore, the role of PCNA,${\alpha}$-l-antichyrnotrypsin, transglutaminase, fibronectin and coefficient with other growth factor and extracellular matrix were further investigated in vivo.

  • Changes in bed forms and subsequent changes in channel roughness by changes in water discharge are discussed with the field data collected from some alluvial rivers in Korea. This study is limited to the following condition of river flow: (1) Medium size alluvial rivers with their widths of 100 m more or less, (2) Straight and prismatic river reach with no additional causes for energy loss but bed friction, (3) Lower-flow regime with Froude number less than 0.5. Major conclusions obtained from this study can be summarized as follows: (1) For the channels considered in this study, the bed roughness expressed by Manning's n increases from 0.02 for the plane beds with no sediment motion to 0.05 for the dune beds, (2) The roughness coefficient for alluvial channels should not be estimated from Strickler-type equations developed for the fixed beds, (3) The method for determining the channel roughness suggested in the present guideline for river works, River Structure Standard, appears to be lack of generality. More research based on the field data collected in Korea is needed in order to improve the existing methods.

  • Impingement/effusion cooling technique is used for combustor liner or turbine parts cooling in gas turbine engine. In the impingement/effusion cooling system, the crossflow generated in the cooling channel induces an adverse effect on the cooling performance, which consequently affects the durability of the cooling system. In the present study, to reduce the adverse effect of the crossflow and improve the cooling performance, circular pin fins are installed in impingement/effusion cooling system and the heat transfer characteristics are investigated. The pin fins are installed between two perforated plates and the crossflow passes between these two plates. A blowing ratio is changed from 0.5 to 1.5 for the fixed jet Reynolds number of 10,000 and five circular pin fin arrangements are considered in this study. The local heat/mass transfer coefficients on the effusion plate are measured using a naphthalene sublimation method. The results show that local distributions of heat/mass transfer coefficient are changed due to the installation of pin fins. Due to the generation of vortex and wake by the pin fin, locally low heat/mass transfer regions are reduced. Moreover, the pin fin prevents the wall jet from being swept away, resulting in the increase of heat/mass transfer. When the pin fin is installed in front of the impinging let, the blockage effect on the crossflow enhances the heat/mass transfer. However, the pin fin installed just behind the impinging jet blocks up the wall jet, decreasing the heat/mass transfer. As the blowing ratio increases, the pin fins lead to the higher Sh value compared to the case without pin fins, inducing $16\%{\~}22\%$ enhancement of overall Sh value at high blowing ratio of M=1.5.

  • The finite element analysis of a micro turbine was made to investigate safety margin of its operating condition for the high aspect ratio nickel micro turbine blades fabricated by conventional LIGA-like method. From our study, we found that the fabricated turbine could not exceed its yield strength even if the pressure difference between inlet and outlet of turbine blade was about 44kPa, and the correlation of friction coefficient and the maximum stress, caused by contact friction between outer diameter of shaft and inner diameter of turbine blade, was somewhat reciprocal. The maximum stress was decreased with the increasing contact friction, when turbine blade was in its state of rotation. By the results of our study, we conclude that it is possible to fabricate metal micro turbine more easily han surface micromachining technology and to operate with no risk of metal structure's damage, which is caused by yield strength, if the operating condition with the design of micro turbine itself are optimized. It is useful to adopt other applications which have the contact problems between a moving part and the fixed one in micro structures.

  • This study is concerned with the numerical investigation of dynamic characteristics of 2.5MW-class wind turbine gearbox in which the misalignment improvement of plenary gear shafts by the flexible pins and the dynamic impact response are analyzed by the finite element method. The tooth contact between gears is modelled using the line element having the equivalent tooth stiffness and the contact ratio to accurately and effectively reflect the load transmission in the internal complex gear system. The equivalent tooth stiffness is calculated by utilizing the tooth deformation analysis and the impulse torque is applied to the input shaft for the dynamics response characteristic analysis. Through the numerical experiments, the equivalent tooth stiffness model was validated and the misalignment improvement of planetary gear shafts was confirmed from the comparison with the cases of fixed shafts at one and both ends.

  • In this paper, we propose a novel approach of an acoustic echo cancellation (AEC) algorithm which is differently adopted in the relevant period condition by the suppression parameter of a parametric wiener filter (PWF). The PWF uses the suppression parameter to compensate uncertainty of acoustic echo signal estimation. The existing PWF method using the fixed suppression parameter derives the distortion of the near-end signal at the double-talk. To solve this problem, the boundary condition is devised using decision of the double-talk detection (DTD) algorithm and voice activity detector (VAD). The boundary condition makes it possible to treat differently depending on the case of the single-talk and double-talk. According to the experimental results, the proposed approach is found to be effective for acoustic echo cancellation using the boundary condition.

  • Among the learning methods for Continuous Learning environments, "Learning without Forgetting" has fixed regularization strengths, which can lead to poor performance in environments where various data are received. We suggest a way to set weights variable by identifying the features of the data we want to learn. We applied weights adaptively using correlation and complexity. Scenarios with various data are used for evaluation and experiments showed accuracy increases by up to 5% in the new task and up to 11% in the previous task. In addition, it was found that the adaptive weight value obtained by the algorithm proposed in this paper, approached the optimal weight value calculated manually by repeated experiments for each experimental scenario. The correlation coefficient value is 0.739, and overall average task accuracy increased. It can be seen that the method of this paper sets an appropriate lambda value every time a new task is learned, and derives the optimal result value in various scenarios.

  • Objective: The objective was to compare (pedigree-based) best linear unbiased prediction (BLUP), genomic BLUP (GBLUP), and single-step GBLUP (ssGBLUP) methods for genomic evaluation of growth traits in a Mexican Braunvieh cattle population. Methods: Birth (BW), weaning (WW), and yearling weight (YW) data of a Mexican Braunvieh cattle population were analyzed with BLUP, GBLUP, and ssGBLUP methods. These methods are differentiated by the additive genetic relationship matrix included in the model and the animals under evaluation. The predictive ability of the model was evaluated using random partitions of the data in training and testing sets, consistently predicting about 20% of genotyped animals on all occasions. For each partition, the Pearson correlation coefficient between adjusted phenotypes for fixed effects and non-genetic random effects and the estimated breeding values (EBV) were computed. Results: The random contemporary group (CG) effect explained about 50%, 45%, and 35% of the phenotypic variance in BW, WW, and YW, respectively. For the three methods, the CG effect explained the highest proportion of the phenotypic variances (except for YW-GBLUP). The heritability estimate obtained with GBLUP was the lowest for BW, while the highest heritability was obtained with BLUP. For WW, the highest heritability estimate was obtained with BLUP, the estimates obtained with GBLUP and ssGBLUP were similar. For YW, the heritability estimates obtained with GBLUP and BLUP were similar, and the lowest heritability was obtained with ssGBLUP. Pearson correlation coefficients between adjusted phenotypes for non-genetic effects and EBVs were the highest for BLUP, followed by ssBLUP and GBLUP. Conclusion: The successful implementation of genetic evaluations that include genotyped and non-genotyped animals in our study indicate a promising method for use in genetic improvement programs of Braunvieh cattle. Our findings showed that simultaneous evaluation of genotyped and non-genotyped animals improved prediction accuracy for growth traits even with a limited number of genotyped animals.

  • In the design of horizontally curved plate girder web panels, it is required to evaluate accurately the elastic buckling strength under pure shear. Currently, elastic shear buckling coefficients of curved web panels stiffened by transverse intermediate stiffeners are determined by assuming conservatively that straight web panels without curvature are simply supported at the juncture between the flange and web. However, depending upon the geometry and the properties of the curved plate girder, the elastically restrained support may behave rather closer to a fixed support. The buckling strength of curved girder web is much greater (maximum 38%) than that of a straight girder calculated under the assumption that all four edges are simply supported in Lee and Yoo (1999). In the present study, a series of numerical analyses based on a 3D finite element modeling is carried out to investigate the effects of geometric parameters on both the boundary condition at the juncture and the horizontal curvature of web panel, and the resulting data are quantified in a simple design equation.
