In order to evaluate effectiveness of zinc source on uptake of zinc by rice plant, a pot experiment carried out using ZnEDTA and $ZnSO_4$ in a glasshouse. The results obtained were summarized as follows: The effectiveness of zinc source on uptake of zinc by rice plants was different with different soil. Namely ZnEDTA was more efficient than $ZnSO_4$ in increasing yield of zinc and concentration of zinc in the plant grown on Jecheon calcareous soil. In case of Keumgok acid soil, however, no superiority of ZnEDTA treatment was found. The plant growing status of ZnEDTA treated calcareous soil was also shown that larger number of tillers per hill, bigger height of the plant and good yield of dry matter production than those of the plant grown on $ZnSO_4$ treatment. Regardless of the zinc source, smaller number of tillers per hill, shorter height of the plant, and the lowest yield of dry matter were shown in the treatment of zinc and straw mixed with both soils. It seemed that more applied zinc was to be fixed by the straw application resulting in poor zinc yield. The extent of the zinc fixation showed markedly in Jecheon calcareous soil.

Bacillus velezensis is an important plant growth-promoting rhizobacterium with immense potential in agriculture development. In the present study, Bacillus velezensis Lle-9 was isolated from the bulbs of Lilium leucanthum. The isolated strain showed antifungal activities against plant pathogens like Botryosphaeria dothidea, Fusarium oxysporum, Botrytis cinerea and Fusarium fujikuroi. The highest percentage of growth inhibition i.e., 68.56±2.35% was observed against Fusarium oxysporum followed by 63.12 ± 2.83%, 61.67 ± 3.39% and 55.82 ± 2.76% against Botrytis cinerea, Botryosphaeria dothidea, and Fusarium fujikuroi, respectively. The ethyl acetate fraction revealed a number of bioactive compounds and several were identified as antimicrobial agents such as diketopiperazines, cyclo-peptides, linear peptides, latrunculin A, 5α-hydroxy-6-ketocholesterol, (R)-S-lactoylglutathione, triamterene, rubiadin, moxifloxacin, 9-hydroxy-5Z,7E,11Z,14Z-eicosatetraenoic acid, D-erythro-C18-Sphingosine, citrinin, and 2-arachidonoyllysophosphatidylcholine. The presence of these antimicrobial compounds in the bacterial culture might have contributed to the antifungal activities of the isolated B. velezensis Lle-9. The strain showed plant growth-promoting traits such as production of organic acids, ACC deaminase, indole-3-acetic acid (IAA), siderophores, and nitrogen fixation and phosphate solubilization. IAA production was accelerated with application of exogenous tryptophan concentrations in the medium. Further, the lily plants upon inoculation with Lle-9 exhibited improved vegetative growth, more flowering shoots and longer roots than control plants under greenhouse condition. The isolated B. velezensis strain Lle-9 possessed broad-spectrum antifungal activities and multiple plant growth-promoting traits and thus may play an important role in promoting sustainable agriculture. This strain could be developed and applied in field experiments in order to promote plant growth and control disease pathogens.

Purpose: This study was conducted to confirm the anatomic conformity of the new periarticular locking plates designed by Zimmer on Korean adult bones and to identify the structures at risk during the application of these implants. Methods: The study was performed on the humerus, radius, and tibia of 10 adult cadavers(6 males and 4 females) procured from the cadaveric lab of our hospital. Anteroposterior (AP) and lateral X-rays were taken to confirm that the cadavers were free of any unusual lesions or anatomic variations. We used the 3.5-mm proximal humerus plate, 2.7-mm distal radius plate, 3.5- and 5.0-mm proximal tibia plates, and 3.5-mm distal tibia plate developed by Zimmer, Inc. (Zimmer periarticular locking plate). The longest plate from each group was used to confirm anatomical conformity. Standard approaches were used for each area, and soft tissue was retracted in order to pass the plate beneath the muscle. The position of the plate was confirmed using standard AP and lateral view X-rays. After this procedure had been completed, the region was dissected along the length of the implant to determine the conformity of the implant to bone and the penetrations of screws into the articular surface or violations of any vital structures, such as nerves, blood vessels, or tendons. Results: Excellent anatomical conformity was observed with Zimmer periarticular locking plates for Korean adults. The tibial nerve and the posterior tibial artery were found to be structures at risk when applying a distal tibial plate. Conclusion: Additional posterolateral fixation is recommended when dealing with cases of tibial plateau fracture when the fracture line extends to the posterolateral cortex. We recommend taking proper views using 10~15 degrees of internal rotation to ensure correct screw length and, thus, avoid penetration of vital structures and tendons.
As the amount of pesticides consumption increases in agriculture, the side effects of pesticides on soil microorganisms have become an essential part in safety evaluation of pesticide for continued soil fertility. In order to establish the method of safety assessment of pesticides in Korea, a series of tests were carried out. Among the paddy pesticides Fujione (Isoprothiolane, fungicide), Ortran (Acephate, insecticide), and Machete (Butachlor, herbicide) were chosen and the effects of above three pesticides on Korean paddy soil microorganisms were studied. The measurements of pesticide effects on the cycling of carbon ($CO_2$ production), nitrogen fixation ($C_2H_2$ reduction), nitrification, and dehydrogenase activity were carried out. These measurements were complemented by evaluation of pesticide effects on viable microbial numbers. Although Fujione reduced the fungi numbers and inhibited nitrogen cycling activities somewhat, no significant adverse effects were show by any of the tested pesticides in our study.
In order to improve effectiveness of rhizobia-legume symbiotic nitrogen fixation, ecological and physiological characteristics of indigenous rhizobia distributed in Korea soil, that is, the effects of soybean cultivation, physico-chemical properties and climate on the population of indigenous rhizobia and other soil microbes were investigated. The results were summarized as follows: The population of indigenous rhizobia were ranged from $5.1{\times}10^4$ cells to $196.8{\times}10^4$ cells per gram of soil in soybean cultivated soils but from $1.6{\times}10^4$ cells to $78.6{\times}10^4$ cells per gram of soil in soybean un-cultivated soils sampled from 9 different agro-climate zone. The highest population was observed in a soybean cultivated loamy soil from southern part of Korea. The content of available phosphate, exchangeable Ca, Mg, Cu, and B in soil were positively correlated but active Fe, exchangeable Al, Na, and $SO_4$ were inversely correlated to the population of indigenous rhizobia. The inverse relationship was observed between the number of indigenous rhizobia and actinomycetes.
In order to find out the effectiveness of nitrogen fixation in rhizobia-legume symbiotic relationship, ecological and physiological characteristics of indigenous rhizobia distributed in Korean soils, that is, dissimilatory nitrate reduction patterns of indigenous soybean rhizobia isolated from four different soils, and differences in one-and two-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoretic pattern of proteins among the each subgroups of Bradyrhizobium japonicum and Rhizobium fredii, were investigated. The results were summarized as follows: 1. The indigenous soybean rhizobia isolated from four different soils could be classified into 4 groups depending on growth rate and dissimilatory nitrate reduction pattern, that is, $S_1$ (slow-grower; Bradyrhizobium japonicum and nitrate denitrifier), $S_2$ (slow-grower; Bradyrhizobium japonicum and nitrate respirer), $F_1$ (fast-grower; Rhizobium fredii and denitrifier), and $F_2$ (fast-grower; Rhizobium fredii and nitrate respirer). 2. The population ratio of fast- to slow-growing R. japonicum was 39% to 61%, and the ratio of denitrifier to nitrate respirer was 31% to 69% and 89% to 11% in fast and slow-grower, respectively. Some differences were observed between fast- and slow-growing R. japonicum but no significant difference was observed between denitrifier and nitrate respirer within same growth type by one and two dimensional SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoretic patterns.
BACKGROUND: In this study, in order to verify the effects of supplemented organic amendment fertilizers recommended by the soil testing on cabbages, we used various amounts of organic amendment fertilizers. The amount of organic amendment fertilizers was decided by calculating each ratio of inorganic nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium based on the recommended fertilizer composition. METHODS AND RESULTS: The cabbages subjected to treatments 1 and 2 showed similar or greater leaf colors (SPAD values), head heights, head widths, head weight, soil organic matter content, nitrate-nitrogen level, and conductivity after harvest, when compared with cabbages treated with chemical fertilizers. The phosphorus and potassium fixation in the soil were higher in the plot where cabbages were treated with chemical fertilizers, and the nutrient use efficiency was greater in the plots with organic amendments and mineral addition. CONCLUSION: The treatments 1 and 2 that were supplemented with 180-200% of nitrogen, 100-130% of phosphorus, and 185-250% of potassium in comparison to chemical fertilizers, applied by the inorganic ratios of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium can be used as organic amendment fertilizers for cabbages.

In order to research into the devel of the concept of movement and speed in our own way and compare with the Piaget's method, and then find out the formative period of such development, we have put the 192 primary school children as the model and obtained the following results. 1. As their grade upyards, all the experimental subjects showed the gradual progress generally regardless of sex or regions, while only the relative speed showed irregular progress. 2. There was no experimental subject which showed any remarkable sexual characteristics. But in the relative movement, the lower grade boys and higher grade girls made progress. In the subjects of circulation movement, intuition of speed, relative speed and speed of simultaneous movement, the boys marked better progress, whilst the girls were advanced a little in the speed of continuous movement with, different distance and time. 3. There was no conspicuous difference between the urban and rural areas, except a slight tendency that the urban children made better progress in the change of progressing direction, native continuous procedure of periodical movement, travelling road, and the speed of continuous movement with different distance and time whereas the rural children were more advanced in the relative movement, relative speed and intuition of speed. But it should be 'taken into consideration that the rural regions in our case were relatively developed in comparison with the traditional rural communities, which may explain about little regional difference. 4. Comparing our research results with the Piaget's theory, we have reached below results. Our research reports that the formative period of the conception of the problems of diverse progressing direction and a native continuous procedure of periodical movement was simultaneous, at the Piagetian level(at the fourth grade) which coincides with Piagetian theory. The travelling road should be made up a little lower at 2A/2B according' to Piagetian Level, whereas it was formed at the 4th grade as shown in our previous research. Intuition of speed should belong to the prior stage to concrete operation, but our research shows it was formed late at the 4th grade. Composition of displacement was made at the 6th grade, and it was almost equal to the first stage of formal operation(3A). But in the subjects of relative movement relative speed, the speed of continuous movement with different distance and time, relation and preservation of invariable speed, and accelerated motion, even 6th grade children marked a poor record. Summed up, the procedure conception as a basic movement conception coincides with the Piagetion level. But as for speed intuition, relative speed and speed fixation, it was Jar behind Piagetian level. Therefore it is required that we have to concentrate on the systematic training in these parts on the spot.
In order to investigate the Post-operative changes in scoliotic spine according to selection of fusion level a mathematical finite element model of King-Moe type II scoliotics spine system was developed. By utilizing this finite element scoliosis model surgical correction simulation procedures of pedicle fixation and derotation were simulated. In consequence of the calculation by changing the fusion Levels, postoperative changes like Cobb angle, apical vertebrae axial rotation (AVAR), thoracic kyphosis, and rib hump were Qualitatively analyzed. In the analysis of operative kinematics, the decrease or Cobb angle was most prominent in distraction than in deroation. Applying the rod derotation only was not effective in decrease of Cobb angle but just caused increase of At AR and rib hump. From the operative simulation, co-action or distraction and translation during rod insertion has major impact on Cobb angle decrease and maintenance of kyphosis. With rod rotation, Cobb angle decrease was obtained, but combined increase of AVAR and rib hump was simulation observed as well. The case of most extended instrumentation range with 60o rod rotation produced double decrease of Cobb angle, but the increase of rib hump and AYAR occurred corresponding1y. The optimum selection of fusion level was proved as one level less than inflection position of the thoracic spine curvature.
In order to evaluate menopausal syndrome objectively, examinations were performed as follows: 1) Simplified Menopausal Index (SMI Koyama) and QOL questionnaire (Nagata) were examined subjectively. 2) Urine 17-KS-5 (S Nishikaze), 17-OHCS (OH) were examined objectively. 3) A mobile telemedical device with EKG and KSG was lent to Patients. The subjects were 48 menopausal patients who visited our university hospital as outpatients. According to the results of 5, OH, the subjects were divided into 4 Groups; Group I is high S & high OH, Group ll low S & low OH, Group 111 is low S & high OH, Group tl is high S & low OH. Group IH was the largest (64.6%), Group of was none. The subjects showed significantly lower QOL condition and higher score of SMI. In the QOL, questionnaire items of fixation to physical status (psychogenic reaction), sleep (insomnia), pain(chronic pain) were in common. In SMI, functional vascular symptoms were the largest number. On treatment, Group I was considered to have no need for supplementary agents, but anti-Oketsu agents was prescribed. For Group ll and in some supplementary agents such as red ginseng were prescribed, because they showed low 5. In conclusion, all the groups showed a sign- nificant improvement of QOL and SMI. Group I showed a decrease of OH, Group ll showed an increase of 5, Group In showed an increase of S and SIOH and a decrease of OH. These phenomena were considered prohomeostatic. In QOL, the items of chronic pain, insomnia and appetite were improved. In SMI, chillness, dyspnea, palpitation, pain and fatigability were improved. In mobile tole-medical device, abnormal findings were found in 88.2% of patients. General sdaptation syndrome (Selye, H.) is considered to adjust human life. Menopause is the transit period to exhausted stage in it. So its symptoms vary from person to person. In conclusion, 5 and OH are useful both for classification of menopausal syndrome and for determining treatments according to the classification
