  • We investigated five ciliate species from soil, estuary and marine habitats in eastern Gangwon-do Province, South Korea. Morphology was studied through observation of living specimens as well as silver preparations. The species were classified into five genera, five families, five orders and four classes. Aspidisca aculeata, Hemiurosoma similis, Litonotus alpestris, Stentor roeselii and Vorticella infusionum are first records in Korea, and among them, the genus Hemiurosoma is recorded for the first time. Here, we provide short descriptions with microphotographs of these species.

  • In the Oriental Medicine, the physical constitution of a human being can be classified into five characteristic elements. The remedy based on the five elements constitution has revealed excellent clinical effects so far. Therefore, it may be worthwhile to conduct job design researches considering the five elements constitution for improving the efficiency and safety of job. In this study, we examine whether the theory can be applied for job design through the experiment by ‘Digital-type Speed Anticipation Reaction Tester’ or not and suggest the desirable direction of job design.

  • Everything in the surrounding universe can be attributed into five elements. Human organs can be also linked to the five elements. Cells, the smallest unit of the human body, consist of cellular organelles as little organs. Here, we extended the concept of the five elements to a cellular level via the human organs, theoretically re-evaluating the overall association of cellular organelles in maintaining the homeostasis of cellular functions.

  • Objectives : The aim of this study is to regulate the medical meaning about Kwan [self-denial] which is used by Jeongkyeok [reinforcing the weak body part] and Seungkyeok [consolidating the weak body part while inducing cathartic action of comparatively stronger body part] of Saam Acupuncture in common. Methods : This study generalized the method of understanding 'The Five Viscera Interaction' in Oriental Medicine from the perspective of literature and considering human organs in the medical context. Results and Conclusions : 1. There existed 'The Five Viscera Interaction' theory regulating the correlation between the five viscera headed by "Nankyeong" in the traditional Oriental medicine. The five viscera interaction theory was used as the standard of judging the symptom and the prognosis of a disease in the history of Oriental medicine and further used even as the method of preventing and treating diseases. 2. The treatment included in "Biyebaekyobang", a medical book in the period of Goryeo, can be rated as the most developmental form of medical theory which applied 'the five viscera interaction theory' to clinical treatment. The author of "Biyebaekyobang" managed to break away from the schematism of the five viscera interaction through the method of treating two internal organs using one organ treatment and applying the individually different relations between organs. "Biyebaekyobang" shows close similarities to Saam Acupuncture. 3. The organs handled in Saam Acupuncture has a significance in that it put forward the part which had not been aggressively dealt with in medical history up until then.

  • The Five Laws of Library Science was introduced into Japan in 1935. After World War II, it was widely disseminated among young librarians by the education for librarianship developed in the 1950's. Its concept, "Books for All," met a serious opposition from local authorities based on their long continued concept of "preservation." After they realized that people eagerly use local libraries, they interpreted that the duty of public library was "lending books." They introduced "Privatization" of libraries into quite a few local libraries in order to save money. For overcoming problems, it is important to disseminate the library concept among the public, the assembly members and government officials planning to change their attitude of disregarding libraries. As the fundamental library philosophy, the Five Laws of Library Science is important. In the commentary of the Five Laws written by the present writer, he included an illustration of triangle pyramid showing the structure of the Five Laws. He included here the spiral of study on the library and the library science, based on the Section 814 of the Five Laws. He welcomes discussions on his Japanese angle from different viewpoints in order to develop further understanding of the Five Laws.

  • Objectives: To characterize Five Woons in 1993, 1994 and 1995. Methods: A diagnostic questionnaire was given to 1066 High School students who were born in Korea from 1993 to 1995. One of the Five Woons was given to the participant based on his and her birthday. The oneway analysis of variance was applied to compare the means of the Five Woons in each year. Results: 1. Developed a reliable questionnaire consisting of 28 items for the purpose of chracterizing five constitutions. 2. Based on the Duncan method, significant differences were observed among the Five Woons in height, weight and BMI (p<0.1). For height, the score of Wood constitution was lowest. For weight the core of Soil constitution was lowest. 3. Based on the Duncan method, at the significant level (p<0.1), the Five Woons were different in each year (Gapsul year, Eulhae year, Gyeyoo year) for 28 items in the questionnaires: Q1, Q2,Q3, Q7, Q8, Q11, Q12, Q15, Q18, Q19, Q21, Q22, Q24, Q26, Q27 and Q28. Conclusions: Further clinical research is necessary to characterize five constitutions and also develop more delicate analyses and questionnaires. Also the diagnosis and corresponding treatments based on the Five Woons should be further studied in view of the Asian medicine.

  • Dr. S. R. Ranganathan's Five Laws of Library Science were published in 1931 which is a classic work. This article describes in detail the Five Laws of Library Science and their implications on library activities. These laws have provided a scientific approach to library science. They constitute the philosophical basis for work and services of all types of libraries. These also provide guidance in the practice of Library and Information Science. He author emphasises that these will provide source of inspiration and guidance in the years to come. Every student and teacher of library Science and librarian must give a thought to the implications of these laws. In the changing environment of libraries in the emerging society has to fall with in the purview of these laws. The imperatives motivated by these five laws at the time of Ranganathan and in the present days have been identified. The new interpretations of the five laws with the various current nomenclature of Library and Information Science and other allied subjects have been enumerated. These new interpretations of these Laws shows that in today's international world of librarianship, Ranganathan's Five laws are much important and relevant what was before and even it is increasing. These Laws became the cornerstones of the philosophy of the techniques of Western society's library experts. The author concludes that the vision and legacy of Ranganathan will continue to be an inspiration and guiding spirit for the emergence of the new library and information profession. These will serve as source of inspiration and guidance in the years to come. It is not whether Ranganathan is by himself relevant to-day, but it is we who can make him relevant by studying and applying his principles and practices in different areas of library management.

The method was reintroduced in traditional Korean medicine when it was finalized. The viscera figures in the Uibang-yuchwi is one of the good examples in which the photos influenced by the five viscera spirit meditation appeared in medical literature. This research is aimed to study the process and the result of how medical knowledge influenced the formation of the five viscera spirit meditation, an important health theory of Taoist medicine, and how Korean medicine was affected by Taoist medicine. Methods : We will compare and study the information included in the following publications: the Taipingjing from the Dong-Han Period when the concepts of five viscera spirit were conceived; the huangtingjing from the Wei-Jin-Nan-Bei-Chao Period when the five viscera spirit meditation was finalized; the Yuanshenjing, the Yuzhoujing and the Buxietu based on Taoist medicine; and the Uibang-yuchwi based on traditional Korean medicine. Results & Conclusions : SThe medical knowledge at the initial stage made its way into Taoist medicine, forming the foundation of health theories and contributing to the creation of the five viscera spirit meditation. After some exchanges of medical knowledge and practices between Taoist medicine and other existing medicines, the five viscera spirit meditation reappeared in medical literature in the form of drawings and was used to cure diseases.
