  • The proximate composition of viscera of six fish species viz., Catla catla, Labeo, rohita Cirrhina mrigala, Hypophthalmichthys molitrix, Ctenopharyngodon idella and Cyprinus carpio under the influence of artificial feed $(T_1)$, broiler manure $(T_2)$, buffalo manure $(T_3)$, N:P:K (25:25:0 $T_4$) and control pond $(T_5)$ has been studied on final harvest after the end of experimental period of one year. The overall comparison of six fish species under five different treatments showed that Cyprinus carpio remained the best for visceral total protein contents. The maximum visceral protein content was recorded in fishes under $T_2$ except Cirrhina mrigala, while the minimum under $T_5$. The comparison of five treatments showed that maximum (6.69) percentage of fat in viscera of fish was recorded under $T_2$, closely followed by $T_4$ while minimum (4.89) under the effect of $T_5$. Among the six fish species under five treatments Cyprinus carpio showed maximum accumulation/deposition of total fats in viscera.

  • Recently, possibility of low protein diet with high energy level for improvement of fish production has been proposed in several fish species, especially under restricted feeding rate, fish responded better on high energy diet than low energy diet McGoogan and Gatlin (1999) stressed another benefit of low protein diet with high energy for fish production, in terms of reduction of nitrogen waste from fish metabolism However, others reported no effect of high lipid in feed on performance of fish (Jover et al. 1999). This was probably because that energy availability o requirement for fish varied based on fish species, protein content or quality in feed, rearing water temperature condition and feeding ration. • We investigated temporal and depth-related variation in species composition and abundance of the fish assemblage in the southern East Sea. Fish samples were collected seasonally between 2007 and 2008 using a demersal trawl off the southern coast of Korea. We identified 59 fish species belonging to 41 families. The most frequently occurring species was Coelorinchus multispinulosus, followed by Lophius litulon, Acropoma japonicum and Apogon lineatus. The five most abundant species were A. lineatus, A. japonicum, Myctophum nitidulum, Engraulis japonicus and C. multispinulosus, accounting for 87.04% of the total number of individuals collected. The number of species, abundance and diversity fluctuated with sampling location and time. Permutational multivariate analyses of variance revealed that the assemblage structure was influenced by year, season and water depth, with season being the main indicator. These changes were visually emphasized using non-metric multidimensional scaling ordination plots. Fluctuations in assemblage structure were due to differential contributions of the dominant species.

  • Fish species composition in eelgrass bed of Bongam on Hansando island, Korea was determined using monthly samples collected by a surf net from August 2009 to July 2010. A total of 30 species, 3,237 individuals and 6,850.1g of fish were collected. The dominant species were Gymnogobius heptacanthus, Rudarius ercodes, Takifugu niphobles, Chaenogobius annularis, Pterogobius elapoides and Syngnathus schlegeli which accounted for 86.7% of total number of individuals of fish collected. Eelgrass started growing from May ($DW61.9g/m^2$) showing a peak biomass in August ($DW81.6g/m^2$), and low values in November ($DW57.23g/m^2$) to February ($DW15.41g/m^2$). The fish assemblages in the eelgrass beds showed clear seasonal changes; the number of fish species and individuals were low from September to December 2009, and high from December 2009 to July 2010. Seasonal variation in species composition and abundance was related to the water temperature and standing crops of eelgrass.

  • Lipid levels and fatty acid compositions of 20 species of subtropical fish caught off the coast of Jeju Island, Korea were determined. The fish were categorized according to total lipid (TL) content as follows; lean fish ($TL=1.19{\pm}0.32%$, n=10 species), low-fat fish ($TL=3.02{\pm}0.44%$, n=6 species) and medium-fat fish ($TL=6.87{\pm}1.23%$, n=4 species). The prominent fatty acids were saturated fatty acids (SFAs), at 16:0 and 18:0 monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs), at 18:1n-9 and 16:1n-7, and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), at 22:6n-3, 20:5n-3 and/or 20:4n-6. Across all species, the percentages of PUFAs and SFAs were $38.0{\pm}7.89%$ and $34.3{\pm}3.08%$, respectively, with no significant difference between both groups (P<0.05), but showed higher proportions than that of MUFA group ($27.8{\pm}7.23%$) (P<0.05). The proportion of n-3 PUFAs was $27.1{\pm}8.68%$ across all fish species, similar to levels in other fishes from Korea. These results suggest that subtropical fish from Jeju Island are a good source of n-3 PUFAs for humans.

  • Fishes are found in different lentic and lotic aquatic ecosystems. Determining the composition of fish communities is a crucial component of water quality evaluations and conservation strategies in flowing rivers. The present study is carried out to investigate fish species diversity, richness, and abundance in two second-order streams: Gereb Tsedo (GTS) and Elala in the Tekeze sub-basin. We collected fish with backpack electrofishing during August and December 2013 and March 2014. Fish species richness and the total number of species per stream and per microhabitat were calculated for each stream. Species diversity for each site was calculated using the Shannon index of diversity using the standard formula H' = -Σpi ln (pi). Diversity data among habitats and streams were compared using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey post hoc comparisons, using the statistical software package STATISTICA 11. A total of 6,554 specimens representing four species: Garra blanfordii, Grra ignestii, Garra dembecha and Garra aethiopica, were caught. They are all indigenous riverine fish species of the family Cyprinidae. Fish abundance was significantly higher in GTS than Elala stream (t-test, t = 1.444, df = 3, p < 0.05). Across the two streams, the overall relative fish abundance was higher in pools, with 53%, followed by runs and riffles with 35% and 12%, respectively. Garra blanfordii was dominant in pools while G. aethiopica was the least dominant. Stream and habitat types were likely the more important driving factors behind the observed patterns of diversity, although the impact of other, not evaluated variables cannot be excluded. Most likely, the observed patterns do not represent a signature of fish dispersal limitation given that almost all species were widely distributed across the study area.

  • This study investigated the species composition and abundance of floating fish eggs to determine the timing and location of spawning of fish inhabiting the coastal waters of Sagye, Jejudo Island. Eggs were collected with a Bongo net bimonthly from May 2009 to February 2010. Identifications were based on nucleotide sequences of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) gene. Eggs were determined to belong to 43 distinct taxa, 35 of which were identified to the species level. The assemblage spanned eight orders, 23 families, and 32 genera. The number of taxa collected varied from month to month, with 14 taxa (12 species) found in June 2009, 11 taxa (10 species) in October 2009, 10 taxa (nine species) each in August 2009 and February 2010, eight taxa (six species) in April 2009, and five taxa (four species) in December 2009. Five abundant species (Branchiostegus japonicus, Engraulis japonicus, Pseudolabrus sieboldi, Goniistius zonatus, and Halichoeres tenuispinis) together represented 52.8% of the total number of eggs collected during the study.

  • A study on the ichthyoplankton assemblage was conducted around Dokdo in the East Sea in September 1999 and May 2000. Sixteen species of fish larvae including eggs were collected during the surveys. Anchovy (Engraulis japonicus) eggs and larvae were comprised of 2.0% and 94.5% of total samples in number, respectively. Muller's pearlside (Maurolicus muelleri) eggs and larvae were comprised of 95.0% and 3.2%, respectively. The other species mostly composed of warm water species were less than 2% of total samples in number. The number of species and abundance of the fish lawae and eggs were higher in September than in May. Although there were limited data on the ichthyoplankton around Dokdo in summer and winter, this study area seems to be used for the spawning or nursery ground of fishes.
