The objective of this study was to evaluate survival rate and fish movement (migration) using a tagging approach of passive integrated transponder (PIT) in Juksan Weir, which was constructed as a four major river restoration projects. For this study, survival rates of each fish species and the mobility of fish individuals were analyzed during 2 weeks by the insertion of PIT tags to various fish species in the laboratory. According to tagging tests in the laboratory, the survival rate 37.5% (30 survivals of 80 individuals) after the insertion of PIT tags. The survival rate of Carassius auratus and Hemibarbus labeo was 100% and 80% after the insertion of the tags, respectively, whereas it was only 13.3% for Zacco platypus. In the field experiments of Juksan Weir, 6 species and 157 individuals from 8 species (563 individuals) were detected in the fixed automatic data-logging system, indicating a detection rate of 27.9% in the fishway of Juksan Weir. In the meantime, some species with no or low detection rates in the fixed automatic data-logging system were turn out to be stagnant-type species, which prefer stagnant or standing water to live.

An analytical method has been developed for measuring chlorostyrenes in fish tissue sample. Extraction of chlorostyrenes from fish tissue was carried out by ultrasonication using acetone/n-hexane (5:2, v/v) mixture. Most of the lipids in the extract were eliminated by freezing-lipid filtration, prior to solid-phase extraction (SPE) cleanup. During freezing-lipid filtration, about 90% of the lipids extracted from the fish samples were easily removed without any significant losses of chlorostyrenes. For purification, SPE using Florisil was used for the rapid and effective cleanup. Quantification was performed using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry in the selected ion monitoring mode. Spiking experiments were carried out to determine the recovery, precision, and limits of detection (LODs) of the method. The overall recovery was above 80% in the spiked fish tissue sample at 10 and 100 ng/g levels, respectively. The detection limits for chlorostyrenes were ranged from 0.05 to 0.1 ng/g. This developed method is demonstrated to give efficient recoveries and LODs for detecting chlorostyrenes spiked into fish tissue with high lipid content.
A series of experiments were conducted to examine on what stimulus giant danio (Danio malabaricus) were mainly responsible for detecting alarm substance. When 0.15 ml alarm substance (10 ppm) was introduced into the tank, fish showed no notable change in swimming pattern. However, the introduction of 1.5 ml alarm substance (100 ppm) could induce fright reaction about in 6 minutes. Further, when 15 ml alarm substance (1,000 ppm) was introduced into the tank, fish showed the following fright reaction in a few seconds; suppressing to feed diet, no swimming, strong chasing, and visual alertness. In detecting alarm substance, fish were mainly depending on the chemical stimulus (nares) rather than the vision stimulus (eyes) because fish detected alarm substance by the chemical cue showed the significantly stronger fright reaction than by the visual cue. The time for fish to show the initial fright reaction after detecting alarm substance by the chemical cue was shorter than by the visual cue. Also after alarm substance was introduced into the tank, olfaction-deprived fish showed significantly weaker fright reaction and less frequency of chasing than the normal fish which detected alarm substance by both olfaction and gustation stimulus. These results indicated that chemical stimulus, especially olfaction might be the primary sensory modality used in the detection of the alarm substance for giant danio.

One major and time-consuming task in fish production is obtaining an accurate estimate of the number of fish produced. In most Nigerian farms, fish counting is performed manually. Digital image processing (DIP) is an inexpensive solution, but its accuracy is affected by noise, overlapping fish, and interfering objects. This study developed a catfish recognition and counting algorithm that introduces detection before counting and consists of six steps: image acquisition, pre-processing, segmentation, feature extraction, recognition, and counting. Images were acquired and pre-processed. The segmentation was performed by applying three methods: image binarization using Otsu thresholding, morphological operations using fill hole, dilation, and opening operations, and boundary segmentation using edge detection. The boundary features were extracted using a chain code algorithm and Fourier descriptors (CH-FD), which were used to train an artificial neural network (ANN) to perform the recognition. The new counting approach, based on the geometry of the fish, was applied to determine the number of fish and was found to be suitable for counting fish of any size and handling overlap. The accuracies of the segmentation algorithm, boundary pixel and Fourier descriptors (BD-FD), and the proposed CH-FD method were 90.34%, 96.6%, and 100% respectively. The proposed counting algorithm demonstrated 100% accuracy.
Autonomous underwater vehicle makes attracts to many researchers. This paper proposes a convolutional neural network (CNN) based fish detection method. Since there are not enough data sets in the process of training, overfitting problem can be occurred in deep learning. To solve the problem, we apply the dropout algorithm to simplify the model. Experimental result showed that the implemented method is promising, and the effectiveness of identification by dropout approach is highly enhanced.
Vibrio septicemia,, resulting in high mortality, has been caused by Vibrio vulnificus. Ingestion of marine products or contact with sea water contaminated with Vibrio vulnificus can cause septicemia. Vibrio vulnificus has been detected world wide and west sea area of Korea, Kum river estuary in particular, showed high detection rate. Higher detection rate of Vibrio vulnificus were reported in the bottom deposit with low depth of water, low salinity, and high COD. Man with the liver disease can easily come down with Vibrio septicemia and the main source is the sliced raw fish dish. The preventive measure for this disease is to wash raw fish material thoroughly with tap water and handle in sanitary conditions. Washing with sea water is strictly prohibited . It may be necessary to forbid the small-scale businessmen from selling the sliced ray fish dish in the vicinity of seashore. Man with the liver disease of diabetes should not swim or consume the raw fish dish in the contaminated area during summer.
To measure the size and weight of the fish, we developed an automatic fish size measurement system using a deep neural network, where the YOLO (You Only Look Once)v3 model was used. To detect fish, an IP camera with infrared function was installed over the fish pool to acquire image data and used as input data for the deep neural network. Using the bounding box information generated as a result of detecting the fish and the structure for which the actual length is known, the size of the fish can be obtained. A GUI (Graphical User Interface) program was implemented using LabVIEW and RTSP (Real-Time Streaming protocol). The automatic fish size measurement system shows the results and stores them in a database for future work.
A simple, rapid and simultaneous analytical method is described for the detection of Sulfonamide and Tetracycline residues, i.e., Sulfamerazine (SMR), Sulfamethazine (SMT), Sulfamonomethoxine (SMM), Sulfadimethoxine (SDM), Sulfaquinoxaline (SQN), Oxytetracycline (OXY), Tetracycline (TC), Chlortetracycline (CTC). Blank control and sulfonamide and tetracycline fortified fish muscle samples (0.5 f) were blended with octadecylsilyl (C18, 40 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$, 21% load, 60$\AA$) derivatized silica packing material (2 g). Blended fish samples were washed with hexane, then, benzene and dichloromethace were used for the elution of tetracycline and sulfonamide were analyzed by HPLC. Correlation coefficients of standard curves for individual sulfonamide and tetracycline isolated from fortified samples were linear (0.9993$\pm$0.0003~0.9997$\pm$0.0003, 0.9493$\pm$0.078~0.9753$\pm$0.036), respectively. The average percentage recoveries of sulfonamide and tetracycline ranged as 80.86~96.52% to 85.88~92.23%, and 30.01~37.12% to 65.89~73.40%, for the concentration range (0.1~1.0 ppm) examined, respectively. Limit of detection for sulfonamide was 0.0012 ppm for SMR in Paralichthys Olivacleus and 0.0020 ppm for SMR, 0.015 ppm for SMM in Cyprinus Carpio. The applicability of this procedure is demonstrated by separation and detection of incurred tetracycline and sulfonamide residues in fish muscle tissue.
