  • This paper addresses a fundamental study that is necessary to complement and improve the current domestic design specifications for the strong motion duration criterion and the envelope function of artificial accelerograms that can be applied to the earthquake-proof design of nuclear structures. The criteria for the design response spectra and strong motion duration suggested by USNRC and ASCE Standard 4-98 are commonly being used in the profession, and they are first compared with each other and reviewed. By applying 209 real strong earthquake records that are greater than 5 in magnitude at rock sites to the strong motion duration criterion in ASCE 4-98, an empirical regression model that predicts the strong motion duration as a function of the earthquake magnitude was then developed. Using synthetically generated earthquake time histories for the 10 cases whose strong motion durations varied from 6 to 20 seconds, extensive seismic analyses were finally conducted to identify the effects of the strong motion durations on the seismic responses of the nuclear power plant containment structures.

  • As the bridges are an integral part of the transportation network, their function as one of the most important vital arteries during an earthquake is fundamental. In a design point of view, the bridges piers, and in particular the wall piers, are considered as effective structural elements in the seismic response of bridge structures due to their cantilever performance. Owing to reduced seismic load during design procedure, the response of these structural components should be ductile. This ductile behavior has a direct and decisive correlation to the development of plastic hinge region at the base of the wall pier. Several international seismic design codes and guidelines have suggested special detailing to assure ductile response in this region. In this paper, the parameters which affect the length of plastic hinge region in the reinforced concrete bridge with wall piers were examined and the sensitivity of these parameters was evaluated on the length of the plastic hinge region. Sensitivity analysis was accomplished by independently variable parameters with one standard deviation away from their means. For this aim, the Monte Carlo simulation, tornado diagram analysis, and first order second moment method were used to determine the uncertainties associated with analysis parameters. The results showed that, among the considered design variables, the aspect ratio of the pier wall (length to width ratio) and axial load level were the most important design parameters in the plastic hinge region, while the yield strength of transverse reinforcements had the least effect on determining the length of this region.

  • Purpose: This study aimed to determine the patterns of follow-up visits for cervix cancer in a national cancer center in Mexico. Materials and Methods: The National Cancer Institute of Mexico is cancer center with 119 beds that mostly cares for an underserved and socially disadvantaged population. The medical records of cases of cervical cancer that had at least one year of clinical follow-up after being in complete response at the end of primary treatment were analyzed. We recorded the numbers of total and yearly follow-up visits and these were compared with the number of follow-up visits recommended by the National Comprehensive Cancer Network 2013, version 2 for cervical cancer. Results: Between March and June 2007, the medical records of 96 consecutive patients were reviewed. Twenty (21%) of these met inclusion criteria and were selected. In the first year the median number of visits was 11 (4-20). In the ensuing years, $2^{nd}$, $3^{rd}$, $4^{th}$ and $5^{th}$, the number of analyzed patients remaining in follow-up decreased to 17, 14, 13 and 9 respectively. There were 462 follow-up visits to primary treating services (Gynecology Oncology, Radiation Oncology and Medical Oncology) as compared to 220 suggested by the NCCN guidelines ($X^2$ test p<0.0001). There were 150 additional visits to other services. Conclusions: Our results suggest that in our institution there is an overuse of oncological services by cervical cancer patients once treatment is completed.

  • The institution, which was temporarily run, has not registered and has neglected records due to its temporality. In this regard, many related experts have pointed out their risk of loss. Therefore, the objective of this study is to analyze the problems of the temporary institution's records management system by investigating the current situation, and to suggest solutions, thereby arousing the necessity of managing the records produced by dissolved agencies. To specifically review this, first, this paper analyzes the records management system of abolished institutions, focusing on the working environment, related laws, and guidelines. Moreover, it indicates the problem with regard to the effectiveness of legal systems, the lack of professionalism and infrastructure for records management services in temporary agencies, and National Archives of Korea's passive response. With regard to these problems, there are some solutions presented such as the complementation of related laws and guidelines, the strengthening of professionalism in relevant agencies in relation to managing records properly, and the establishment of cooperative networks between related institutions.

  • The importance of disaster management and response is emerging as various disasters such as COVID-19, torrential rains, and fires occur one after another. In addition, in order to respond efficiently throughout disaster response activities, it is necessary to quickly collect disaster site information and quickly check the site situation through photo and video information so that rapid disaster response can be achieved. In this study, essential information required for decision-making was derived by analyzing the essential activities of each disaster response stage, analyzing the crisis management standard manual and related laws for each disaster type, and daily comprehensive report. In addition, a list of information necessary to grasp the situation of the disaster site and grasp the status of real-time damage was derived to establish guidelines for collecting volatile disaster site information, and disaster situation information can be efficiently displayed through a spatial information-based display system. By presenting essential disaster management information to be collected first, the person in charge of collecting information can efficiently collect information, and the situation room in charge of disaster response decision-making is expected to enable more efficient disaster situation management by receiving only the necessary information.

  • Large scale display panel(LSDP) is a main component in the next generation main control rooms. LSDP is located at the front of VDU-based operator's workstation and plays an important role in providing operators with overall information of plant status through mimic diagram, text/digit, graph, and so on. A critical matter determined at the first stage of LSDP design is how much information is displayed, because the information density of LSDP affects operator's performance. Many human factors guidelines recommend low information density of displays to avoid degrade of operator's performance, but doesn't provide a useful limit of information density. In this paper, we considered information density as the number of plant parameters and investigated the proper number of plant parameters through a human factors experiment. The experiment with 4 subjects was carried out and response time, error, and heart rate variation as criterion measures were recorded and analyzed. As the results, it is identified that the proper number of parameters in a LSDP is about thirty.

  • A Kriging model is a sort of approximation model and used as a deterministic model of a computationally expensive analysis or simulation. Although it has various advantages, it is difficult to assess the accuracy of the approximated model. It is generally known that a mean square error (MSE) obtained from the kriging model can't calculate statistically exact error bounds contrary to a response surface method, and a cross validation is mainly used. But the cross validation also has many uncertainties. Moreover, the cross validation can't be used when a maximum error is required in the given region. For solving this problem, we first proposed a modified mean square error which can consider relative errors. Using the modified mean square error, we developed the strategy of adding a new sample to the place that the MSE has the maximum when the MSE is used for the assessment of the kriging model. Finally, we offer guidelines for the use of the MSE which is obtained from the kriging model. Four test problems show that the proposed strategy is a proper method which can assess the accuracy of the kriging model. Based on the results of four test problems, a convergence coefficient of 0.01 is recommended for an exact function approximation.

  • Purpose of this paper is to review series of Limits to Growth studies from its original Rome Club Report published in 1972 to the most recent one in 2012 by Jorgen Randers and finds its implications on concept and strategy of sustainable development. For this purpose first, this paper reviewed series of Limits to Growth studies in details with focus on scenarios used in simulation of world model. Second, response to the original Limit to Growth was reviewed and to see validity of its scenario based simulations, simulated results of interest variables and actual historical data up to the year 2010 was compared. Third, structure and key arguments in both studies, Limit to Growth studies and Our Common Future was explained and compared. Finally, implications of the Limit to Growth studies on concept and strategy for sustainable development was discussed. Based on the comparison, this paper argued that even if the term sustainable development was not used in the Limit to Growth at all, concept and strategies for sustainable development implied in the Limit to Growth are more clear and specific than those of Our Common Future. Since Limit to Growth studies were simulation based ones that produce detailed behaviors on interest variables, it clarifies more clearly the abstract concept of sustainable development and thus, provides specific guidelines for the direction of sustainable policy which has been suffering long from vagueness of concept of sustainable development.

  • This study analyzed the gender factors and priorities that are on the basis for establishing the school safety education policy according to the times when the demand for customized education is increasing. AHP analysis method was used in the paper for systematic and hierarchical analysis. We had checked a safety education specialist group to identify the priorities of important factors to improve the efficiency of analysis. The male group first considered the change of the beneficiary by policy guidelines, and the female group regarded the change of interest and public opinion as important. This has studied the difference in approach between the two groups, although the key elements of the detailed policy are the same. This study suggests that school safety education is effective in improving effective gender safety education response capacity and ensuring substantive policy sustainability.
