In this paper, a simple first-order shear deformation theory is presented for dynamic behavior of functionally graded beams. Unlike the existing first-order shear deformation theory, the present one contains only three unknowns and has strong similarities with the classical beam theory in many aspects such as equations of motion, boundary conditions, and stress resultant expressions. Equations of motion and boundary conditions are derived from Hamilton's principle. Analytical solutions of simply supported FG beam are obtained and the results are compared with Euler-Bernoulli beam and the other shear deformation beam theory results. Comparison studies show that this new first-order shear deformation theory can achieve the same accuracy of the existing first-order shear deformation theory.

In this paper, a new first-order shear deformation beam theory based on neutral surface position is developed for bending and free vibration analysis of functionally graded beams. The proposed theory is based on assumption that the in-plane and transverse displacements consist of bending and shear components, in which the bending components do not contribute toward shear forces and, likewise, the shear components do not contribute toward bending moments. The neutral surface position for a functionally graded beam which its material properties vary in the thickness direction is determined. Based on the present new first-order shear deformation beam theory and the neutral surface concept together with Hamilton's principle, the motion equations are derived. To examine accuracy of the present formulation, several comparison studies are investigated. Furthermore, the effects of different parameters of the beam on the bending and free vibration responses of functionally graded beam are discussed.

A new first-order shear deformation theory is developed for dynamic behavior of functionally graded beams. The equations governing the axial and transverse deformations of functionally graded plates are derived based on the present first-order shear deformation plate theory. The governing equations and boundary conditions of functionally graded beams have the simple forms as those of isotropic plates. The influences of the volume fraction index and thickness-to-length ratio on the fundamental frequencies are discussed. The accuracy of the present solutions is verified by comparing the obtained results with the existing solutions.
In the first-order shear deformation laminated beam theory (FSDT), the Kirchhoff hypothesis is relaxed such that the transverse normals do not remain perpendicular to the midsurface after deformation. Bending behavior of laminated composite thin-walled beams with singly- and doubly-symmetric open sections under uniformly distributed and concentrated loads is analyzed by the Timoshenko-type thin-walled beam theory. A closed-form expression for the shear correction factor of I-shaped composite laminated section is obtained. Numerical examples are presented to compare present analytical solutions by FSDT with the finite element solutions obtained by using three dimensional model. The effects of lamination of scheme and length-to-height ratio on the shear deformation of laminated composite beams with various boundary conditions are studied.
A new first-order shear deformation theory is developed for dynamic behavior of functionally graded beams. The equations governing the axial and transverse deformations of functionally graded plates are derived based on the present first-order shear deformation plate theory and the physical neutral surface concept. There is no stretching-bending coupling effect in the neutral surface based formulation, and consequently, the governing equations and boundary conditions of functionally graded beams based on neutral surface have the simple forms as those of isotropic plates. The accuracy of the present solutions is verified by comparing the obtained results with the existing solutions.
In this paper, free vibration characteristics of functionally graded (FG) nanobeams embedded on elastic medium are investigated based on third order shear deformation (Reddy) beam theory by presenting a Navier type solution for the first time. The material properties of FG nanobeam are assumed to vary gradually along the thickness and are estimated through the power-law and Mori-Tanaka models. A two parameters elastic foundation including the linear Winkler springs along with the Pasternak shear layer is in contact with beam. The small scale effect is taken into consideration based on nonlocal elasticity theory of Eringen. The nonlocal equations of motion are derived based on third order shear deformation beam theory through Hamilton's principle and they are solved applying analytical solution. According to the numerical results, it is revealed that the proposed modeling can provide accurate frequency results of the FG nanobeams as compared to some cases in the literature. The obtained results are presented for the vibration analysis of the FG nanobeams such as the influences of foundation parameters, gradient index, nonlocal parameter and slenderness ratio in detail.

Time-dependent creep analysis of a rotating functionally graded cantilever beam with trapezoidal longitudinal cross section subjected to thermal and inertia loading is investigated using first-order shear deformation theory (FSDT). The model described in this paper is a simple simulation of a turbine blade working under creep condition. The material is a metal based composite reinforced by a ceramic where the creep properties of which has been described by the Sherby's constitutive model. All mechanical and thermal properties except Poisson's ratio are assumed to be variable longitudinally based on the volume fraction of constituent. The principle of virtual work as well as first order shear deformation theory is used to derive governing equations. Longitudinal distribution of displacements and stresses are investigated for various volume fractions of reinforcement. Method of successive elastic solution is employed to obtain history of stresses and creep deformations. It is found that stresses and displacements approach their steady state values after 40000 hours. The results presented in this paper can be used for selection of appropriate longitudinal distribution of reinforcement to achieve the desired stresses and displacements.
This paper presents an efficient and accurate coupled beam model for piezoelectric bimorphs based on improved first-order shear deformation theory (FSDT). The model combines the equivalent single layer approach for the mechanical displacements and a layerwise modeling for the electric potential. General electric field function is proposed to reasonably approximate the through-the-thickness distribution of the applied and induced electric potentials. Layerwise defined shear correction factor (k) accounting for nonlinear shear strain distribution is introduced into both the shear stress resultant and the electric displacement integration. Analytical solutions for free vibrations and forced response under electromechanical loads are obtained for the simply supported piezoelectric bimorphs with series or parallel arrangement, and the numerical results for various length-to-thickness ratios are compared with the exact two-dimensional piezoelasticity solution. Excellent predictions with low error estimates of local and global responses as well as the modal frequencies are observed.
The super convergent laminated composite beam element is newly derived for the lateral stability analysis. For this, a theoretical model of the laminated composite beams is developed based on the first-order shear deformation beam theory. The present laminated beam takes into account the transverse shear and the restrained warping induced shear deformation. The second-order coupling torque resulting from the geometric nonlinearity is rigorously derived. From the principle of minimum total potential energy, the stability equations and force-displacement relationships are derived and the explicit expressions for the displacement parameters are presented by applying the power series expansions of displacement components to simultaneous ordinary differential equations. Finally, the member stiffness matrix is determined using the force-displacement relationships. In order to show accuracy and superiority of the beam element developed by this study, the critical lateral buckling moments for bisymmetric and monosymmetric I-beams are presented and compared with other results available in the literature, the isoparametric beam elements, and shell elements from ABAQUS.

In this work, a novel first-order shear deformation beam theory is applied to explore the vibration and buckling characteristics of thick functionally graded beams. The material properties are assumed to vary across the thickness direction in a graded form and are estimated by a power-law model. A Fourier series-based solution procedure is implemented to solve the governing equation derived from Hamilton's principle. The obtained results of natural frequencies and buckling loads of functionally graded beam are checked with those supplied in the literature and demonstrate good achievement. Influences of several parameters such as power law index, beam geometrical parameters, modulus ratio and axial load on dynamic and buckling behaviors of FGP beams are all discussed.
