Purpose - The international market provides a growth momentum for firms by allowing them to tap into a new market. Given information asymmetry between firms and financial analysts, firms' international growth can be perceived as a higher business prospect by analysts. This paper explores the possibility of analysts' over-emphasis on foreign income growth in predicting earnings. Research design, data, and methodology - We utilize a sample of U.S. firms to test the relationship between foreign income growth and analysts' forecast optimism. Our sample of publicly listed and traded U.S. firms between 1976 and 2016 consists of 6,120 firm-year observations. Results - Empirical analyses show that firms that show higher international growth in earnings are likely to face forecast inaccuracy by financial analysts. From the perspective of firms, their earnings are less than what analysts forecasted. Contrary to our prediction on the moderating effect of innovative capabilities, optimistic bias is not intensified - rather, it is reduced - when firms have higher innovative capabilities. Conclusions - Our results imply that while analysts favor firms with higher international growth, innovative capability on the international market places additional risks to firms' operation.
Purpose - This study examines whether price cartel firms perform downward earnings management to avoid or minimize penalty surcharges levied by the Korea Fair Trade Commission and analyzes such earnings management in distribution industry. Research design, data, and methodology - We use 247 firms from 64 price cartel cases in the period of 2011-2016, and collect data from 3 years before to 3 years after the start of price cartel. Earnings management is measured by discretionary accruals. Three discretionary accrual estimation models are employed; modified Jones model, ROA adjusted modified Jones model and CFO-adjusted modified Jones model. For pre- and post-cartel periods, one year, two year, and three year windows are used. Additional empirical analyses are performed for distribution industry sub-sample of 25 cartel firms. Result - The regression results show that cartel firms' discretionary accruals are significantly lower in the period after the start of price cartel than before. And discretionary accruals are lower in cartel firms than in non-cartel firms during the cartel period. Cartel firms in distribution industry also show the earnings management similar to those in other industries. Conclusions - These two findings lead to the conjecture that managers of cartel firms manage their earnings downward. This behavior is indistinguishable between firms in distribution industry and other industries.
Many Korean apparel firms have been adopting the global sourcing to enhance their competitive advantages. The purposes of this study were to identify the current status of global sourcing adopted by Korean apparel firms and to provide useful information for the other apparel firms planning the global sourcing. The questionnaire survey was conducted to 65 Korean apparel firms. The firms selected for this study were women's, men's, unisex casual wear manufacturers which made their products at offshore factories. The results show that about half of them started global sourcing before 2000. Unisex casual wear firms were already doing the global sourcing very actively and women's wear firms were followers. The major benefit of the global sourcing was the cost reduction. The firms that had made inroads into the global market find much satisfaction in global sourcing. These early adopters expected their sourcing countries as a future consumer market. The threatening elements of the global sourcing were the difficulties of quality control and labor cost rising. Cost and technical ability were considered importantly in selecting the global sourcing partners. The firms started the global sorucing before 2000 were greatly depended on offshore production. They concerned for the problems related to the global sourcing.

This study was motivated by a practical need for estimating the macroeconomic effect of government IT Promotion investment, specifically for micro and small firms. Small firms have been in a disadvantageous position to adopt and utilize new IT compared with medium or large-sized firms. Small firms don't have enough resource to acquire IT in general, therefore private IT companies don't have much incentive to develop IT services and products for small firms. Lack of feasible IT solutions for small firms again restricted active IT adoption of small firms. Government recognized the vicious cycle, therefore decided to promote private IT companies to develop IT services and products for small firms's. Our main concern was to identify a relevant government supporting Policy, especially in the amount and the period. To do this, we first constructed a system dynamics simulation model to Investigate important factors and causal relationships among them. Simulation results showed 2.19% of GDP contribution and 0.16% of employment contribution in max from small firms' IT adoption. Also we could find that investing proper amount for a short period would be for better than maintaining Investing small amount for a long period.
An appreciable number of Chinese firms have successfully expanded their businesses into foreign economics although they have limited resources. Advocating that home country government supports can mitigate firms' resource-disadvantages in international expansions, we attempted to investigate whether and how the Chinese government's support enables Chinese firms to compete in foreign markets. Based heavily on the knowledge-based theory of the firm and the resource-based theory of the firm, we developed a model that explain and predicts the effects of home-country government-supports on superior financial performance. The model was empirically tested using a accounting dataset regarding Chinese firms' 323 international expansion events from 2008 to 2015. Empirical evidence presents that the Chinese government's support has a positive effect on Chinese firms' international success and that these firms' marketing, technological, and managerial resources positively moderate the effect of the government support on the firms' international success. Nonetheless, because we employed an event-study method, the limitations of the method can be applied to the current research. In addition, because of the empirical context, the results of the research might lack generalizability. We, however, provided an understanding how firms from emerging countries can succeed in international expansions specifically when they have lack of resources for international competition.

The aim of this study is to compare efficiency and Total Factor Productivity(TFP) between Korean and Japanese construction firms in Korea and Japan over the period of 2005-2011. The results of this study are as follows. Efficiency scores of Korean construction firms are 0.797, and Japanese construction firms are 0.921. Second, annual total factor productivity growth of Korean construction firms is 0.5% and technical progress do much for TFP decrease. However Japanese construction firms marked annual increasing of 2.5% of TFP. Third, technical progress contributed in TFP increase of construction firms in Korea. Korean construction firms, however, relatively lagged behind Japanese construction firms in technical progress. Therefore, Korean construction firms need strategies to achieve technical advances including adopting new technology or process innovation to maintain competitiveness, survive, and develop in the future competition with Japan.
This paper analyzes the efficiency of Korean Ship Component Part Manufacturer firms using DEA model. We evaluated the CCR, BCC efficiency and RTS of 30 Korea Ship Component Part Manufacturer firms. We also suggested the Korean Ship Component Part Manufacturer firms that can be benchmarked based on analyzed information. The result showed five enterprises whose values of CCR efficiency are 1, and eleven enterprises whose values of BCC efficiency are 1. RTS indicated IRS of 1 firms, DRS of 24 firms and CRS of 5 firms.
Firms' utilization of internet is completely changing their business environment. Apparel firms' without exception are using internet as their essential marketing mechanism and as a new media for educating customers. Some apparel firms' at the same time acquire valuable customer information from internet users. These business cases become evident in developed countries. in contrast most domestic appstrl firms' are unable to see the strategic importance of internet. Accordingly their level of internet utilization remains quite low. This paper describes apparel firms' use of internet as electronic commerce mechanism based on cases of pioneering apparel firms' which adopted internet technologies in the first place. We further discuss problems that these
This case study aims at investigating the factors which make venture firms successful. It analysedthree high-performance venture firms originated from the government-financed rese arch institute, the company and the university on the viewpoint of 'dynamic capability' theory. In this case study, technology integration capability and administrative innovation capability were identified as success factors of the three venture firms. The study also presented the role of the incubating organizations. Although incubating organizations supported technological and managerial resource-building of the entrepreneurs, there was not active interactive-learning between venture firms and incubating organizations after spin-off.
This study investigates earnings management of IPO firms in knowledge-based-industry. we analyse the relation between earnings management and R&D expenses(Research and development expense)which is an important expenditure in knowledge based management. First, we found that the earnings management is the largest in the year when the firm is enrolled on the market. Second, the IPO firms have higher DA(discretionary accruals) than existing firms on the market and the size of R&D expenses is larger, too. Finally, in the IPO firms in knowledge-based-industry, the higher accounting receivable and R&D expenses are, the more happens earnings management. Our study shows that the IPO firms of knowledge-basedindustry have high R&D expenses which are core expenditure. Also, earnings management has happened frequently in the IPO firms.
