  • The purpose of this research is to find the optimum combustion conditions for the celadon using a gas kiln. It is clearly defined by the amount of CO gas in the kiln that it is fired in the commonly used oxidation and reduction atmosphere. As a result, while celadon was fired at $1250^{\circ}C$, oxidation happened when the amount of CO was 0~4,500 PPM, a neutral condition happened when the of CO was 4,500~25,000PPM and a reducing process was happened when the of CO was more that 25,000PPM. To reduce gas and firing time while keeping uniformly the firing temperature and firing condition of the gas kiln, you can partially block the gas corridor and adjust it as a damper. This adjustment reduces gas consumption by 40% and shortens the firing time by 1 hour.

  • Quality characteristics of Chrysanthemum indicum L. flower tea were investigated with the number of pan-firing. Total nitrogen, tannin and caffeine contents of tea were increased as the number of pan-firing increased, whereas chlorophyll and total amino acid (AA) contents were decreased. TAA content was in the range of $5,226{\sim}6,561mg%$ with the number of pan-firing. The content of caffeine and chlorophyll was not changed with the number of pan-firing. As the number of pan-firing increased, total polyphenol, flavonoid content, and antioxidant activity was also increased. The highest total polyphenol and flavonoid content was 17.44 and 11.09 mg/g at 7 times pan-firing, respectively. Total antioxidant activity was the highest value of 16.45 mg AA eq/g at 7 times of pan-firing. Based on the sensory evaluation, the best overall quality of the tea was obtained with 5 times of pan-firing.

  • Effect of calcium sulfate and barium sulfate on the formation of portland cement clinker was studied by means of chemical analysis. DTA and X-ray diffraction analysis. In the presence of liquid phase, effect of the additives on the formation of tricalcium silicate was examined according to the reaction, 2CaO.$SiO_3$+CaO$\longrightarrow$3CaO.$SiO_3$, which is the principal reaction in portland cement clinkerization, and optimum conditions in firing clinker concerning amount of additive, firing time and temperature were determined, and its kinetics was referred to. The experimental results are summerized as follow: (1) Appropriate burning temperature range of cement clinker is more limited as the content of calcium sulfate in clinker is increased. Amount of calcium sulfate, firing time and temperature in proper condition of clinkerization is related to each others. Being added suitable quantity of calcium sulfate, firing temperature of clinker can be lowered about $100^{\circ}C$. (2) When 3-5 mole% of calcium sulfate is added, firing time of 15-30 minutes at about $1380^{\circ}C$ is reasonable, and if the content is over7 mole %, firing for 1 hr. or more at $1350^{\circ}C$ is anticipated to be optimum condition. (3) In the reaction of tricalcium silicate formation, the role of barium sulfate as a mineralizer is similar to that of calcium sulfate, but the optimum firing temperature of cement clinker containing barium sulfate tends to be 20-$30^{\circ}C$ higher than that of clinker containing calcium sulfate. (4) When barium sulfate is used as mineralizer, 2-3 mole % of it to tricalcium silicate is recommended and if it is added more than this amount, free CaO is increased rapidly in clinker and alite formation is inhibited.

  • Many countries have conducted extensive studies for biomass co-firing to enhance the durability of reactor on high-temperature corrosion. However, due to the complicated mechanisms of biomass co-firing, there have been limitations in accurately determining the current state of corrosion and predicting the potential risk of corrosion of power plant. In order to solve this issue, this study introduced Lab-scale corrosion system to analyze the corrosion characteristics of the A213 T91 material under the biomass co-firing conditions. The corrosion status of the samples was characterized using SEM/EDS analysis and mass loss measurement according to various biomass co-firing conditions such as corrosion temperature, $SO_2$ concentration, and corrosion time. As a result, the corrosion severity of A213 T91 material was gradually increased with the increase of $SO_2$ concentration in the reactor. When $SO_2$ concentration was changed from 0 ppm to 500 ppm, both corrosion severity and oxide layer thickness were proportionally increased by 15% and 130%, respectively. The minimum corrosion was observed when the corrosion temperature was $450^{\circ}C$. As the temperature was increased up to $650^{\circ}C$, the faster corrosion behavior of A213 T91 was observed. A213 T91 was observed to be more severely corroded by the effect of chlorine, resulting in faster corrosion rate and thicker oxide layer. Interestingly, corrosion resistance of A213 T91 tended to gradually decrease rather than increases as the oxide layer was formed. The results of this study is expected to provide necessary research data on boiler corrosion in biomass co-firing power plants.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the influence of porcelain re-firing on the formation of surface bubble and on the change in shade of metal-ceramic crown exposed to artificial saliva. Materials and methods: Thirty disk-shaped specimens were made in 10 mm diameter with 0.5 mm metal core thickness and 1 mm ceramic thickness. A spectroradiometer was used to determine the CIE Lab coordinates. The number and size of surface bubble were observed with a stereomicroscope. After the exposure to artificial saliva for 7 days, re-firing was performed at glazing temperature. After re-firing, the CIE Lab were calculated, and the number and size of surface bubble were observed again. The change in shade was expressed with ${\Delta}E$. Statistical analysis was done with paired t-test for the change in the number of surface bubble and student t-test for the change in the size of surface bubble (${\alpha$}=0.05). Results: Shade difference was calculated 2.14 ${\Delta}E$ units. The mean number of surface bubble was $1.33{\pm}1.49$ before re-firing, $3.27{\pm}2.90$ after re-firing. After re-firing, the number of surface bubble was significantly increased (P<.05). The mean size of surface bubble was $81.97{\pm}32.03\;{\mu}m$ before re-firing, $142.94{\pm}47.40\;{\mu}m$ after re-firing. After re-firing, the size of surface bubble was significantly increased (P<.05). Conclusion: Shade change after re-firing was perceptible (${\Delta}E$ < 2.0) and clinically acceptable (${\Delta}E$ < 3.7). The number and size of surface bubble was significantly increased after re-firing. Further investigation to decrease the surface bubble on the extra oral repair of metal-ceramic crown, will be needed in future study.

  • This study is conducted to investigate mineralogical characteristics and estimate firing temperature and condition of earthenwares in the 5-6th Century which are found at ancient tombs in Gyo-dong, Gyo-ri, Changnyeong-eup, Changnyeong-gun, Gyeongsangnam-do, TKorea by applying petrological methods. For this study, mineralogical analysis, microtexture observation and chemical analysis were conducted. According to observations using a polarization microscope, the potshreds are mainly composed of quartz and feldspar and consist of some felsic volcanics, tempers, opaques and mullite, hematite and spinel were found under XRD and FTIR analysis. The flow pastes are observed in many potshreds, and it indicate that this textures made by the mixing process or the pottery made from the mixture of 2 sorts of clays at least. They dose not show the features of the potshreds firing under temperature of $1,200-1,300^{\circ}C$ rather than the earthenware firing under relatively low temperature of $1,000^{\circ}C$ approximately because of the existence of a number of pores and the crystals of the specific minerals. The growths mostly of mullite on the surface and into the cracks of the potshreds indicate that the firing condition was not uniform to make even temperature and oxidation. Most of the pottery shreds have felsic volcanic fragments and some of them have cristobalite which is formed at the temperature of more than 1,470^{\circ}C$. But considering the estimated firing temperature, these are not formed during firing but included in the original clay.

  • Ahn-heung Proving Ground(APG) of Agency for Defense Development(ADD) is the only weapon test site which has been performing firing tests for many kinds of missile, artillery and ammunition. APG has been performing the firing tests of so many times every year. The tests related to missiles, artillery and ammunitions cover 80% among the quantity of annual test events. The target area of many kinds of missile, artillery and ammunition is on the sea. Therefore, APG has its marine firing ranges which were approved by the ministry of Defense. Both weapons and ships can run into each other on the sea. APG has to monitor and detect the positions of the ships in the specific dangerous zone on the sea. The positions of the ships are detected by Scanter 2001 radar and GPS100 detection radar. Evading the time period when the ships appear very often on the sea may be a good solution to keep the maritime safety. And evading the place where the ships appear very often on the sea may be a good solution as well. This paper is to analyze the ships' distribution characteristics of marine firing range, which are to raise the efficiency of many kinds firing tests which have been performed in APG of ADD. Ship distribution data from February 2014 to December 2016 were used in this paper. Ship distribution was analyzed with monthly data, seasonal data and etc. The number of the ships in approved sea area is higher in the morning than in the afternoon, and in fall than other seasons, and from August to November, and below 0.5 m in the hight of wave. Using the these conditions, we can raise the test efficiency of many kinds firing tests and guarantee maritime safety. The number of the ships in approved sea area is entirely unrelated to visibility of the sea. The time period when the number of the ships are high on the sea is morning. The season when the number of the ships are comparatively high on the sea is fall. APG of ADD could raise the efficiency of the firing tests and improve the maritime safety, using the analysis results of the characteristics on the ship distribution.

  • Firing characteristics, transverse rupture strength, and heat capacity were studied of the heat-reservoir refractory materials made of red-firing clay, mill scale, and water glass. The firing shrinkage increased with increase of the clay proportion in samples. The volume of fired bodies showed shrinkage by drying up to $300^{\circ}C$, steady expansion in the 300-$700^{\circ}C$ range due to phase transition of iron oxides. and drastic expansion above $1200^{\circ}C$. Flexural strength decreased from 5.6 Mpa to 2.35 Mpa with the decrease of the ratio of clay to mill scale from 1:1 to 1:3 Heat capacities changed from 1.1 Joul/g$^{\circ}$C to 1.35 Joul/g$^{\circ}$C with the ratio of millscale to clay ratio from 1:1 to 1:3. Mill scale in the specimen appears to exist as liquid phase during firing. Firing the specimens in air leads to the eruption of the molten mill scale to the sample surfaces. Contrarily, firing samples in a refractory sagger with a cover suppressed the eruption of the molten mill scale to the surfaces. The addition of mill scale gave rise to porous sintered bodies which would delay cooling rates of heat-reservoir brick.

  • Thermochemical treatment of sewage sludge is an energy-intensive process due to its high moisture content. To save the energy consumed during the process, the hydrothermal carbonization process for sewage sludge can be used to convert sewage sludge into clean solid fuel without pre-drying. This study is aimed to investigate co-firing characteristics of the hydrothermally carbonated sewage sludge (HCS) to a pulverized coal combustion system. The purpose of the measurement is to measure the pollutants produced during co-firing and combustion efficiency. The combustion system used in this study is a furnace with a down-firing swirl burner of a $80kW_{th}$ thermal input. Two sub-bituminous coals were used as a main fuel, and co-firing ratio of the sewage sludge was varied from 0% to 10% in a thermal basis. Experimental results show that $NO_x$ is 400 ~ 600 ppm, $SO_x$ is 600 ~ 700 ppm, and CO is less than 100 ppm. Experimental results show that stable combustion was achieved for high co-firing ratio of the HCS. Emission of $NO_x$ and $SO_x$ was decreased for higher co-firing ratio in spite of the higher nitrogen contents in the HCS. In addition, it was found that the pollutant emission is affected significantly by composition of the main fuel, regardless of the co-firing ratios.

  • The microwave dielectric properties of $LiNb_3O_8-TiO_2$ based ceramics with low firing agents, CuO, $Bi_2O_3$, $B_2O_3$, $SiO_2$, $TiO_2$, were investigated to improve the sintering condition for the LTCC system. According to the X-ray diffraction and SEM, the ceramics of $LiNb_3O_8-TiO_2$ with low firing agents showed no significant second phases within a range of experiments, and fine microstructures. By adding the low firing agents, the sintering temperature decreased from $1200^{\circ}C$ to $925^{\circ}C$. Based on the results of electrical measurements, the $LiNb_3O_8-TiO_2$ ceramics showed a promising microwave dielectric properties for LTCC applications, those are ${\varepsilon}_r$ (dielectric constant) = 44, Q f (quality factor) = 18000, and ${\tau}_f$ (the temperature coefficient of resonant frequency) = $-1.5\;ppm/^{\circ}C$.
