Study of Standard Design Fire Curve of Various Railcar (철도차량별 표준 설계화재곡선 연구)

  • A study on the standardization of design fire HRR(heat release rate) curve was conducted for various railcar from the fire simulation or the fire tests. These standard curves are listed on the tunnel fire safety manual which will be used for the QRA(quantitative risk analysis) process of the long railway tunnels. The design fire curve is based with four simple factor representing the key of fire curve characteristics. Flashover time, maximum HRR and burn out time are the key factors of the design fire curve. Specially total heat release is decided by the burnable material amount in the car.

Fire resistance assessment of high strength segment concrete depending on PET fiber amount under fire curves (화재곡선과 PET섬유 혼입량에 따른 고강도 세그먼트 콘크리트의 화재저항성 평가에 대한 연구)

  • High strength concrete is not only vulnerable to the occurrence of spalling which generates the loss of cross-section in concrete structures but produces faster degradation in its mechanical properties than normal strength concrete in the event of fire. This study aims to evaluate fire resistance of high strength segment concrete with PET fibers mixed to prevent spalling under ISO834 (2hr) and RABT fire curve. As results, the samples without PET fibers show the concrete loss up to the depth of about 8 cm and 9.5 cm from the surface exposed to fire under ISO834 and RABT fire curve respectively. The samples mixed with PET fiber of 0.1% show no spalling under ISO834 fire curve and the spalled thickness of 6.5 cm under RABT fire curve after the fire tests. Finally, the sample mixed with PET fiber of 0.2% shows no spalling under RABT fire curve. The results indicate that the suitable amounts of PET fiber for securing fire resistance performance of this high strength segment concrete are 0.1% under ISO834 fire curve and 0.2% under RABT fire curve. However, even though spalling does not occur, it is necessary to repair the deterioration of concrete up to 4 cm from the surface exposed to fire after fire.

Simplified P-M interaction curve model for reinforced concrete columns exposed to standard fire

  • In the authors' previous study, an axial force-flexural moment (P-M) interaction curve model was proposed to evaluate fire-resisting performances of reinforced concrete (RC) column members. The proposed method appeared to properly consider the axial and flexural strength degradations including the secondary moment effects in RC columns due to fire damage. However, the detailed P-M interaction curve model proposed in the authors' previous study requires somewhat complex computational procedures and iterative calculations, which makes it difficult to be used for practical design in its current form. Thus, the aim of this study was to develop a simplified P-M interaction curve model of RC columns exposed to fire considering the effects of fire damage on the material performances and magnitudes of secondary moments. The simplified P-M interaction model proposed in this study was verified using 66 column fire test results collected from literature, and the verification results showed that the proposed simplified method can provide an adequate analysis accuracy of the failure loads and fire-resisting times of the RC column specimens.

A Numerical Analysis of Steel Structures on a Subway Station Fire (지하철정거장 화재에 대한 강구조물의 내화해석)

  • A fire disaster is very serious in the closing space like subway station. In this study, the simulation on fire diffusion is performed to get the temperature history curve, which is used for the fire resisting structural analysis. Most of subway stations are built by the reinforced concrete structure, but recently steel structures are selected for the larger space or beauty. Steel structures relatively have more weaknesses against fire, so it is necessary to develop the method for evaluating fire-resisting capacity in this kind of structures. The developed method is applied to the subway station in Daegu city. It shows that the developed method can be used to simulate the fire disaster and to get the temperature history curve and evaluate the safety of steel structures against the fire.

The Study on the Prediction of Temperature Curve by Compartment Fire Experiment (구획화재실험을 통한 온도 변화 예측 기법 연구)

  • In this study, the Mock-up office space experiments have been performed for the fire behavior analysis of the compartmented space used for the performance-based fire safety design of buildings. Mock-up test was conducted using the compartmented office space dimensions, which are 2.4 m wide, 3.6 m wide, and 2.4 m hight. Test was conducted with the combustible materials such as a desk, a chair, a computer ect. The fire load in the Mock-up office space was $18.74kg/m^2$. As a result, the temperature of the central compartment space to reach $600^{\circ}C$ were 394 to 408 s. The temperature of the corner near the entrance edge to reach $600^{\circ}C$ were 404 to 420 s. At this study, the temperature curve in the compartmented space has been predicted using the temperature data appling the BFD curve. The BFD curve factor based on the fire tests was determined by the maximum temperature of $900^{\circ}C$, 7 min to reach the maximum temperature, and the shape coefficient of 1.5. The initiating fire was rapidly increased to 9 min, and decreased.

  • A variety of research projects have been undertaken due to the recent catastrophic tunnel fires throughout the world, Among them, more emphasis was given to full scale and scale model fire experiments, and recently the area of fire resistance of tunnel structures attract more interests, On the contrary to the cases in most of the advanced countries where design standards as well as recommendations have already been announced, no local criteria for design can be found, This paper aims at deriving the fire characteristics appropriate for the assessment criteria of fire resistance of structures in local tunnels through studying the existing fire temperature curves including ISO 834 standard temperature curve, HC curve, RWS curve, ZTV curve and EBA curve.

Numerical Analysis of the Effects of Droplets Characteristics of Water Spray on Fire Suppression (물 분무 액적 특성이 화재진압에 미치는 영향에 대한 수치해석)

  • In this study, the effects of the characteristics of droplets of water spray on suppression of fire were analyzed numerically using fire dynamics simulator (FDS) 6.5.2. Additionally, the fire suppression characteristics by the water spray nozzle, including the extinguishing coefficient (EC), droplet size distribution function (SDF), median volumetric diameter (MVD), and droplets per second (DPS), were evaluated in terms of the decreasing normalized heat release rate (HRR) curve and cooling time. It was observed that with increase in the EC, the normalized HRR curve decreased rapidly, and the changing MVD affected the suppression of fire. In case of mono-disperse, the normalized HRR curve decreased slowly with the increase in DPS. On the contrary, in case of multi-disperse, the normalized HRR curve decreased rapidly even with a small increase in DPS.

  • In this study, a new function with higher accuracy for fire heat release rate prediction was developed. The 'αt2' curve, which is the major exponential function currently used for fire engineering calculations, must be improved to minimize the prediction gap that causes fire system engineering inefficiency and lower cost-effectiveness. The newly developed prediction function was designed to cover the initial fire stage that features rapid growth based on logistic function theory, which has a more logical background and graphical similarity compared to conventional exponential function methods for 'αt2'. The new function developed in this study showed apparently higher prediction accuracy over wider range of fire growth durations. With the progress of fire growth pattern studies, the results presented herein will contribute towards more effective fire protection engineering.

  • This study is performed to apply a standard to evaluate fire protection assessment for tunnel structures when a fire breaks out in the road tunnel. Recently, a number of road tunnels have been rapidly increased and fire risk also multiplyed according to extend tunnel length, due to natural features and environmentally-friendly road construction in Korea. But we have not yet been prescribed appropriate time-temperature curve for tunnel fire. Therefore, we presented fire design model and investigated time-temperature curve proposed by a foreign country considering traffic, a kinds of vehicles which are a basis of heat rate. At the end, Hydrocarbon modified curve applied as design fire model by using numerical analysis and presented design fire model and examined the effects of tunnel structures.

  • There are no International Standards or Criteria pertaining to fires inside tunnels at the moment, but there are some fire-related regulations in some advanced countries such as Germany and the Netherlands where some fire-related studies have been expedited. Germany has established regulations related to the safety of structures by stipulating Fire Curves of RABT and EBA Tunnels. Also, the Netherlands has established the resistance capacity of structures by stipulating RWS curve so that they can prevent the adjacent area from being damaged due to a tunnel collapse. Hydrocarbon Fire Curve is the standard assessing the behaviour of a structure in a serious fire, by increasing the heating speed and the maximum temperature of ISO 834 Curve, while MHC Fire Curve, which was established in France, realizes more serious fire conditions. In this study, we aimed to develop the basis of full-sized experiments, with which you can assess the fire-resisting capacity against the fire strength of concrete PC panel lining, through the realization of various tunnel fire curves as mentioned above, by developing the heating furnace suitable for the requirements of Fire-Resisting Standards, with which you can assess the fire damage of tunnel concrete lining. We have developed various conditions of the heating furnace and the method to install a thermo couple within the furnace based on EFNARC and KS F2257-1. We have also conducted a calibrating experiment in order to secure its reliability.
