The objective of this study is to clarify the structural features of members consisting of a connection, as part of the previous study on the CFT column-to-beam tensile connection with a combined cross diaphragm. This connection has the following merits: it evenly distributes the stress on the beam flange and the diaphragm and reduces the stress concentration by improving the stress transfer route and restraining the abrupt deformation of the diaphragm. Finite element analysis was performed to find out the stress transfer through the sleeve, which is an important member of the connection with a combined cross diaphragm. The length and thickness of the sleeve were used as variables for the analysis. The analysis results showed that the length and thickness of the sleeve did not influence the capacity of the connection and played the role of a medium for the transfer of the stress from the diaphragm to the filled concrete. It was proposed that the appropriate length of the sleeve have the same value as the diameter of the sleeve and that the appropriate ratio of the sleeve diameter to the sleeve thickness be 20. Two equations for the evaluation of the load carrying the capacity of the connection were also proposed through the modification of the evaluation equation suggested in the previous study.

A transmission tower was designed according to general and special load cases based on KEPCO Design Specifications. The special load case such as unbalanced load a cording to some broken wires has not been considered significantly. Therefore, this paper presents investigations on the stability and safety of main post members subjected to unbalanced load and design wind load. In this study, all cases totally considered. From the finite element analyses using LUSAS program, the stresses on the tower subjected to unbalanced load and design wind load were very high in comparison to the allowable stresses of the steel post member that was used. Some of the post member had higher stresses than the yield stress of the steel member. This paper also shows an example to improve the capacity of the post members using increased cross-section members. Based on the analyses results, when investigating the safety of the transmission tower, one must consider thenew design philosophy including ultimate strength of the member and reliability of the special loading cases.
response surface method (RSM) is widely used to evaluate th e extremely smal probability of ocurence or toanalyze the reliability of very complicated structures. Althoug h Monte-Carlo Simulation (MCS) technique can evaluate any system, the procesing time of MCS dependson the reciprocal num ber of the probability of failure. The stochastic finite element method could solve thislimitation. However, it is limit ed to the specific program, in which the mean and coeficient o f random variables are programed by a perturbation or by a weigh ted integral method. Therefore, it is not aplicable when erequisite programing. In a few number of stage analyses, RSM can construct a regresion model from the response of the c omplicated structural system, thus, saving time and efort significantly. However, the acuracy of RSM depends on the dist ance of the axial points and on the linearity of the limit stat e functions. To improve the convergence in exact solution regardl es of the linearity limit of state functions, an improved adaptive response surface method is developed. The analyzed res ults have ben verified using linear and quadratic forms of response surface functions in two examples. As a result, the be st combination of the improved RSM techniques is determined and programed in a numerical code. The developed linear adapti ve weighted response surface method (LAW-RSM) shows the closest converged reliability indices, compared with quadratic form or non-adaptive or non-weighted RSMs.

The cables in cable-stayed bridges are under high stress and are very sensitive to vibration due to their small section areas compared with other members. Therefore, it is reasonable to evaluate the cable impact factor by taking into account the dynamic effect due to moving-vehicle motion. In this study, the cable impact factors were evaluated via moving-vehicle-load analysis, considering the design parameters, i.e., vehicle weight, cable model, road surface roughness, vehicle speed, longitudinal distance between vehicles. For this purpose, two steel composite cable-stayed bridges with 230- and 540-m main spans were selected. The results of the analysis were then compared with those of the influence line method that is currently being used in design practice. The road surface roughness was randomly generated based on ISO 8608, and the convergence of impact factors according to the number of generated road surfaces was evaluated to improve the reliability of the results. A9-d.o.f. tractor-trailer vehicle was used, and the vehicle motion was derived from Lagrange's equation. 3D finite element models for the selected cable-stayed bridges were constructed with truss elements having equivalent moduli for the cables, and with beam elements for the girders and the pylons. The direct integration method was used for the analysis of the bridge-vehicle interaction, and the analysis was conducted iteratively until the displacement error rate of the bridge was within the specified tolerance. It was acknowledged that the influence line method, which cannot consider the dynamic effect due to moving-vehicle motion, could underestimate the impact factors of the end-cables at the side spans, unlike moving-vehicle-load analysis.

In this talk, I will present two research works in progress, which are: i) mapping of piezoelectric polarization and associated charge density distribution in the heteroepitaxial InGaN/GaN multi-quantum well (MQW) structure of a light emitting diode (LED) by using inline electron holography and ii) in-situ observation of the polarization switching process of an ferroelectric Pb(Zr1-x,Tix)O3 (PZT) thin film capacitor under an applied electric field in transmission electron microscope (TEM). In the first part, I will show that strain as well as total charge density distributions can be mapped quantitatively across all the functional layers constituting a LED, including n-type GaN, InGaN/GaN MQWs, and p-type GaN with sub-nm spatial resolution (~0.8 nm) by using inline electron holography. The experimentally obtained strain maps were verified by comparison with finite element method simulations and confirmed that not only InGaN QWs (2.5 nm in thickness) but also GaN QBs (10 nm in thickness) in the MQW structure are strained complementary to accommodate the lattice misfit strain. Because of this complementary strain of GaN QBs, the strain gradient and also (piezoelectric) polarization gradient across the MQW changes more steeply than expected, resulting in more polarization charge density at the MQW interfaces than the typically expected value from the spontaneous polarization mismatch alone. By quantitative and comparative analysis of the total charge density map with the polarization charge map, we can clarify what extent of the polarization charges are compensated by the electrons supplied from the n-doped GaN QBs. Comparison with the simulated energy band diagrams with various screening parameters show that only 60% of the net polarization charges are compensated by the electrons from the GaN QBs, which results in the internal field of ~2.0 MV cm-1 across each pair of GaN/InGaN of the MQW structure. In the second part of my talk, I will present in-situ observations of the polarization switching process of a planar Ni/PZT/SrRuO3 capacitor using TEM. We observed the preferential, but asymmetric, nucleation and forward growth of switched c-domains at the PZT/electrode interfaces arising from the built-in electric field beneath each interface. The subsequent sideways growth was inhibited by the depolarization field due to the imperfect charge compensation at the counter electrode and preexisting a-domain walls, leading to asymmetric switching. It was found that the preexisting a-domains split into fine a- and c-domains constituting a $90^{\circ}$ stripe domain pattern during the $180^{\circ}$ polarization switching process, revealing that these domains also actively participated in the out-of-plane polarization switching. The real-time observations uncovered the origin of the switching asymmetry and further clarified the importance of charged domain walls and the interfaces with electrodes in the ferroelectric switching processes.

Two types of very small multiplying gears and arrays have been developed for new dental hand-pieces, and the increased speed ratios, modules, number of teeth, gear diameters, and gear types were calculated based on the dynamics of the machinery. The contacting and bending strengths were evaluated for gear teeth with two design concepts using AGMA equations and finite element analyses, and the contacting stresses on teeth with and without DLC (diamond-like-carbon) coating layers were calculated. Fatigue and tension tests were performed to obtain an S-N curve, the Young's modulus, and the strength of the gear material, and these were utilized in the analyses. Slightly larger stresses were found for 2-axis-type gears than for other types of gears, and the S-N curves showed that a gear lifetime of 109 cycles was satisfied. The contacting stresses in gears coated with DLC were reduced by 30%. A new prototype model of a hand-piece with small gears was successfully fabricated and tested.

This study investigates the crack growth behavior due to primary water stress corrosion cracking (PWSCC) in the dissimilar metal butt weld of a reactor piping using Alloy 82/182. First, detailed finite element stress analyses were performed to predict the stress distribution of the dissimilar metal butt weld in which the hydrostatic and the normal operating loads as well as the weld residual stresses were considered to evaluate the stress redistribution due to mechanical loadings. Based on the stress distributions along the wall thickness of the dissimilar metal butt weld, the crack growth behavior of the postulated axial and circumferential cracks were predicted, from which the crack growth diagram due to PWSCC was proposed. The present results can be applied to predict the crack growth rate in the dissimilar metal butt weld of reactor piping due to PWSCC.
This paper is about to simulate the defibrillation situations using 3D FE(finite element) thorax model and describes the effects of three clinical electrodes' positions and size and organ's resistivity used in simulation on the characteristics of current density distribution over myocardium. The model was constructed with a eillipsoidal cylinder for the thorax and the 2D Visible Human images for remains. And, the distributions of current density were computed by a commercial program ANSYS 5.4. The electrical shock of the AP(anterior-posterior ) electrode provided more current flows with heart than the others and that of the LL(lateral-lateral) electrode showed the most uniform current density distribution. However, the electrode size had little effect on the current density distribution. In the evaluation of model's sensitivity to tissue resistivity variation, the variation of the myocardium's resistivity most affected the minimum, average and maximum current densities.

Multi-stage deep drawing is a widely used industrial manufacturing process, and its applications are gradually expanding to both small products and large metallic products. The USB C-type socket used in smart phones, for example, is manufactured using oval multi-stage deep drawing. The socket is very small and slender and it requires precise manufacturing. The thickness distribution of the final product is guaranteed only if it is uniform throughout the overall process. Therefore, minimizing the height difference between long and short sidewalls after the first operation is important for this goal. An initial blank optimization was performed for an oval-type drawing process based on finite element simulations. The goal was to determine an initial blank geometry that can maintain uniform height and thickness after the first draw operation. The initial blank shape of the sheet metal was optimized, and the results show that it satisfied the conditions of minimal thickness reduction and even thickness distribution. The geometry from the optimized simulation was compared with experimental results, which showed good agreement.

The corrosion of reinforcements embedded in concrete causes severe deterioration in reinforced concrete structures. As a countermeasure, epoxy coated reinforcements are used to prevent corrosion of reinforcements. When epoxy coated bars are used, the resistance of corrosion is excellent, but epoxy coating on the bars have a disadvantage of reduction in bond capacity comparing to that of normal bars. Therefore, it is necessary to confirm the bond performance of epoxy coated reinforcements through experimental and analytical methods. Bond behaviors of epoxy coated bars for various diameters of 13 and 19mm and thicknesses of cover concrete of 3 types(ratio of cover to bar diameter) are examined. As the diameters of the epoxy coated bars increase, the difference of bond strength between epoxy coated and uncoated bars also increases and damage patterns showed pull out failure. In addition, finite element analysis was performed based on the bond-slip relationship obtained by direct pullout test and compared with the flexural test results. It is considered that flexural member test is more useful than pullout test for simulating the behavior of actual structure.
