A geometric and material nonlinear finite element analysis is developed for the layered elastomeric bearings. In this study, a mixed variational approach with separate variables is used to describe the displacement and volume change of rubber. To represent finely deformed behavior, Kirchoff stress tensors are used and converted Eulerian stress tensors to describe real physical meanings. Newton's method is utilized to solve the governing nonlinear finite element equations. Numerical test are performed in the case of compression and shear to verify the theory and to illustrate the application of this analysis. And the results of this study were compared to the results of Moore's discrete finite element analysis.
A smart beam made of magneto-electro-elastic (MEE) material having piezoelectric phase and piezomagnetic phase, shows the coupling between magnetic, electric, thermal and mechanical under thermal environment. Product properties such as pyroelectric and pyromagnetic are generated in this MEE material under thermal environment. Recently studies have been published on the product properties (pyroelectric and pyromagnetic) for magneto-electro-thermo-elastic smart composite. Hence, the magneto-electro-elastic beam with different volume fractions, investigated under uniform temperature rise is the main aim of this paper, to study the influence of product properties on clamped-free boundary condition, using finite element procedures. The finite element beam is modeled using eight node 3D brick element with five nodal degrees of freedom viz. displacements in the x, y and z directions and electric and magnetic potentials. It is found that a significant increase in electric potential observed at volume fraction of $BaTiO_3$, $v_f$ = 0.2 due to pyroelectric effect. In-contrast, the displacements and stresses are not much affected.
The incomplete saturation and the void formation during the resin infiltration into fibrous porous media in the resin transfer molding process cause failure in the final product during its service. In order to better understand flow behavior during the filling process, a finite-element scheme for transient flow simulation across the micro-structured fibrous media is developed in the present work. A volume-of- fluid (VOF) method has been incorporated in the Eulerian frame to capture the evolution of flow front and the vertical periodic boundary condition has been combined to avoid unwanted wall effect. In the microscale simulation, we investigated the transient filling process in various fiber structures and discussed the mechanism leading to the flow fingering in the case of random fiber distribution. Effects of the filling pressure, the shear-thinning behavior of fluid and the volume fraction on the flow front have been investigated for both intra-tow and the inter-tow flows in dual-scale fiber tow models.
Functionally graded materials(FGMs) involve dual-phase graded layers in which two different constituents are mixed continuously and functionally according to a given volume fraction. For the analysis of their thermo-mechanical response, conventional homogenized methods have been widely employed in order to estimate equivalent material properties of the graded layer. However, such overall estimations are insufficient to accurately predict the local behavior. In this paper, we compare the thermo-elastic behaviors predicted by several overall material-property estimation techniques with those obtained by discrete analysis models utilizing the finite element method, for various volume fractions and loading conditions.

Flow characteristics in linear axial cascade have been studied using large eddy simulation(LES) based on finite element method(FEM) to investigate details of the leakage flow in the tip clearance of axial flow rotor. STAR-CD(FVM) and PAT-Flow(FEM) have been adopted to solve the Navier-Stokes equations for the simulation of the unsteady turbulent flow. Numerical results from the present study have been compared with the existing experimental results to investigate a tip clearance effect on velocity profile and static pressure distribution on blade surface at various spanwise positions. Both simulation results agree well with the experimental data. However, it has been shown that the results of finite-element large-eddy simulation agree better with experimental data than $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulent model based on finite volume method regarding the tip vortex geometry and static pressure distribution at the center of the tip vortex core. As a result of this study, it is shown that finite-element large-eddy simulation method can predict more exactly on the tip leakage vortex flow and behind flow field.
In this article, the multiphysics response of magneto-electro-elastic (MEE) cantilever beam subjected to thermo-mechanical loading is analysed. The equilibrium equations of the system are obtained with the aid of the principle of total potential energy. The constitutive equations of a MEE material accounting the thermal fields are used for analysis. The corresponding finite element (FE) formulation is derived and model of the beam is generated using an eight noded 3D brick element. The 3D FE formulation developed enables the representation of governing equations in all three axes, achieving accurate results. Also, geometric, constitutive and loading assumptions required to dimensionality reduction can be avoided. Numerical evaluation is performed on the basis of the derived formulation and the influence of various mechanical loading profiles and volume fractions on the direct quantities and stresses is evaluated. In addition, an attempt has been made to compare the individual effect of thermal and mechanical loading with the combined effect. It is believed that the numerical results obtained helps in accurate design and development of sensors and actuators.
The volume control method which utilize a pressure node added into a finite shell element can overcome the drawbacks of conventional load control method and displacement control method. In this study, an improved volume control method is introduced for effective analysis of path-dependent behaviors of RC columns subjected to lateral cyclic loading or reversed cyclic loading along with compressive loading. RC shell structures and RC hollow columns are analyzed by discretizing the structures with layered shell elements and by applying in-plane two dimensional constitutive equations for concrete layers and reinforcement layers of the shell elements. The so-called path dependent volume control method as a finite element analysis technique is verified by comparing analysis results with other data including experimental results. The validity and applicability of the modeling technique is also confirmed by the comparison.
The FVM(Finite Volume Method) have been used mainly for the flow analyses in the piston-cylinder. The objective of the present study is to analyze numerically the piston-driven intake flows using the FEM(Finite Element Method). The FEM algorithm used in this study is 4-step time-splitting method which requires much less execution time and computer storage than the velocity-pressure integrated method and the penalty method. And the explicit Lax-Wendroff scheme is applied to nonlinear convective term in the momentum equations to prevent checkerboard pressure oscillations. Also, the ALE(arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian) method is adopted for the moving grids. The calculated results show good agreement in comparison with those by the FVM and the experimental results by the LDA.
Under longitudinal loading continuous fiber reinforced metal matrix composite(MMC) have interpreted an outstanding performance. However, the applicability of continuous fiber reinforced MMCs is somewhat limited due to their relatively poor transverse properties. Therefore, the transverse properties of MMCs are significantly influenced by the properties of the fiber/matrix interface. In this study, elastic-plastic behavior of transversely loaded unidirectional fiber reinforced metal matrix composites investigated by using elastic-plastic finite element analysis. Different fiber placement(square and hexagon) and fiber volume fractions were studied numerically. The interface was treated as three thin layer (with different properties) with a finite thickness between the fiber and the matrix. The analyses were based on a two-dimensional generalized plane strain model of a cross-section of an unidirectional composite by the ANSYS finite element analysis code.
A graded harmonic finite element formulation based on three-dimensional elasticity theory is developed for the structural analysis of 2D functionally graded axisymmetric structures. The mechanical properties of the axisymmetric solid structures composed of two different metals and ceramics are assumed to vary in radial and axial directions according to power law variations as a function of the volume fractions of the constituents. The material properties of the graded element are calculated at the integration points. Effects of material distribution profile on the static deformation, natural frequency and dynamic response analyses of particular axisymmetric solid structures are investigated by changing the power law exponents. It is observed that the displacements, stresses and natural frequencies are severely affected by the variation of axial and radial power law exponents. Good accuracy is obtained with fewer elements in the present study since Fourier series expansion eliminates the need of finite element mesh in circumferential direction and continuous material property distribution within the elements improves accuracy without refining the mesh size in axial and radial directions.
