  • The ship plating is generally subjected to. combined in-plane load and lateral pressure loads, In-plane loads include axial load and edge shear, which are mainly induced by overall hull girder bending and torsion of the vessel. Lateral pressure is due to. water pressure and cargo. These load components are nat always applied simultaneously, but mare than one can normally exist and interact. Hence, far mare rational and safe design of ship structures, it is af crucial importance to. better understand the interaction relationship af the buckling and ultimate strength far ship plating under combined loads. Actual ship plates are subjected to relatively small water pressure except far the impact load due to. slamming and panting etc. The present paper describes an accurate and fast procedure for analyzing the elastic-plastic large deflection behavior up to. the ultimate limit state of ship plates under combined loads. In this paper, the ultimate strength characteristics of plates under axial compressive loads and lateral pressure loads are investigated through ANSYS elastic-plastic large deflection finite element analysis with varying lateral pressure load level.

A Geometrically Nonlinear Dynamic Analysis of Shallow Circular Arches Using Total Lagrangian Formulation (Total Lagrangian 문제형성에 의한 낮은 원호아치의 동적 비선형거동 해석)

  • For shallow circular arches with large dynamic loading, use of linear analysis is no longer considered as practical and accurate. In this study, a method is presented for the dynamic analysis of the shallow circular arches in which geometric nonlinearity is dominant. A program is developed for analysis of the nonlinear dynamic behavior and for evaluation of the critical buckling loads of the shallow circular arches. Geometric nonlinearity is modeled using Lagrangian description of the motion and finite element analysis procedure is used to solve the dynamic equations of motion in which Newmark method is adopted as a time marching scheme. A shallow circular arch subject to radial step load is analyzed and the results are compared with those from other researches to verify the developed program. The critical buckling loads of shallow arches are evaluated using the non-dimensional parameter. Also, the results are compared with those from linear analysis.

  • Since the propellant tank structure of the projectile is mainly subjected to a compressive force, there is a high risk of damage due to buckling. Large and lightweight structures such as propellant tank have a complex manufacturing process. So it requires a non-destructive test method to predict buckling load to use the structure after testing. Many studies have been conducted on Vibration Correlation Technique(VCT), which predicts buckling load using the relationship between compressive load and natural frequency, but it requires a large compressive load to predict the buckling load accurately, and it tends to decrease prediction accuracy with increasing internal pressure in structure. In this paper, we analyzed the causes of the decrease in prediction accuracy when internal pressure increases and proposed a method increasing prediction accuracy under the low compressive load for being usable after testing, through VCT combined testing and FEA result. The prediction value by the proposed method was very consistent with the measured actual buckling load.

  • It is now well recognized that the ultimate limit state approach is a much better basis for design and strength assessment of ships and offshore structures since it is difficult to determine the realistic margin of safety using the traditional allowable working stress approach on the basis of linear elastic method solutions together with buckling strengthchecks adjusted by a simple plasticity correction. This paper outlines ALPS theory for ultimate limit state assessment of ship structures. ALPS is a computer software which stands for nonlinear Analysis of Large Plated Structures. Application examples of ALPS program to ultimate limit state assessment of plates, stiffened panels and ship hull girders are presented. A benchmark study is made by a comparison with the ALPS solutions with other methods including class rule formulae, nonlinear finite element methods and experimental results.   • In this paper, the structural characteristics of a lightweight soundproof tunnel to reduce the dead load imposed on the bridge are investigated. Subsequently, the design procedure of soundproof tunnel structures is reviewed and a design practice for the lightweight soundproof tunnel is carried out according to the reviewed procedure. Next, design compatibility for the lightweight soundproof tunnel is verified through a detailed finite element analysis. The result for evaluation of design compatibility shows that the lightweight soundproof tunnel has structural safety in structural members, welding zones and foundation parts. It is also confirmed that serviceability and buckling safety is excellent.

  • 대형 다각형 단면 기둥부재의 제작은 용접이나 절곡 등의 다양한 혼합방식으로 이루어 질 수 있다. 이러한 제작방식의 차이에 따라 외력작용 이전의 초기상태에 상당한 차이가 발생한다. 그러나 절곡과 용접이 혼합된 다각형 단면 기둥의 초기 상태를 고려하는 방안에 대한 지침은 분명히 제시되고 있지 않다. 이에 본 연구에서는 다각형 단면 기둥 제작방식에 따른 초기상태가 국부좌굴강도에 미치는 영향을 6각형 단면 기둥모델을 대상으로 해석적으로 평가해 보고자 한다.

  • Self-piercing riveting (SPR) is a sheet-joining method that can be used for materials that are difficult or unsuitable for weld, such as aluminum alloys and other steel sheet metals. The increased application of lightweight materials has initiated many investigations into new SPR conditions for riveting dissimilar materials. However, buckling of the semi-tubular rivet occurs during the riveting of AHSS. In this study, a helical SPR was designed for the riveting of AHSS and Al-alloy. In addition, the reinforced helical SPR which has straight parts was designed. The riveting of AHSS and Al-alloy was simulated. Simulated results were verified by comparison with experimental ones.

  • In nonlinear finite element stability analysis of structures, the foremost necessary procedure is the computation to precisely locate a singular equilibrium point, at which the instability occurs. The present study describes global and local procedures for the computation of stability points including bifurcation points and limit points. The starting point, at which the procedure will be initiated, may be close to or arbitrarily far away from the target point. It may also be an equilibrium point or non-equilibrium point. Apart from the usual equilibrium path, bypass and homotopy path are proposed as the global path to the stability point. A local iterative method is necessary, when it is inspected that the computed path point is sufficiently close to the stability point.

  • The strength characteristics as well as deformation behaviors of honeycomb sandwich composite (HSC) structures were investigated under bending in consideration of various failure modes such as skin layer yielding, interface-delamination, core shear deformation and local buckling. Deformation behaviors of honeycomb sandwich plates were observed with various types of aluminum honeycomb core and skin layer. Their finite-element analysis simulation with a real model of honeycomb core was performed to analyze stresses and deformation behaviors of honeycomb sandwich plates. Its results were very comparable to the experimental ones. Consequently, the increase in skin layer thickness and in cell size of honeycomb core had dominant effects on the strength and deformation behaviors of honeycomb sandwich composites.
