Transport of pollutants in aquifer largely depends on groundwater flow which is governed by aquifer hydraulic parameters. Determination of these parameters and associated groundwater modeling become essential for adequate remediation of contaminate groundwater. The objective of this paper is to analyze groundwater flow and determine the optimum hydraulic parameters by performing groundwater modeling based on sensitivity analysis for unconfined sandy gavel aquifer constructed in a laboratory scale under various boundary condition. Results revealed that the simulated drawdown was lower than the observed drawdown irrespective of boundary conditions. and specific yield (S$_{y}$) had less effect on the grondwater flow than permeability (K) in the aquifer. Water balance analysis showed that the measured drawdown in neighboring observation wells during pumping was higher than either simulated or recovered water table. The indicated that a difference might exist in the water tables between aquifer and wells. The difference was investigated by time domain reflectometry (TDR) measurements on water contents in the region of water table and capillary fringe, and explained by a delayed response of water table during gravitational drainage as the water table was lowered as a result of pumping.g.

Dynamic response measurements from natural excitation were carried out for 25- and 42-story buildings to evaluate their inherent properties, such as natural frequencies, mode shapes and damping ratios. Both are reinforced concrete buildings adopting a core wall, or with shear walls as the major lateral force resisting system, but frames are added in the plan or elevation. In particular, shear walls in a 25-story building are converted to frames from the 4th floor level downwards while maintaining a core wall throughout, resulting in a fairly complex structure. Due to this, along with similar stiffness characteristics in the principal directions, significantly coupled and closely spaced modes of motion are expected in this building, making identification rather difficult. By using various state-of-the-art system identification methods, the modal parameters are extracted, and the results are then compared. Three frequency-domain and four time-domain based operational modal identification methods are considered. Overall, all natural frequencies and damping ratios estimated from the different identification methods showed a greater consistency for both buildings, while mode shapes exhibited some degree of discrepancy, varying from method to method. On the other hand, in comparison with analysis results obtained using the initial finite element(FE) models, test results exhibited a significant difference of about doubled frequencies, at least for the three lower modes in both buildings. To improve the correlation between test and analysis, a few manual schemes of FE model updating based on plausible reasons have been applied, and acceptable results are obtained. The advantages and disadvantages of each identification method used are addressed, and some difficulties that might arise from the updating of FE models, including automatic procedures, for such large structures are carefully discussed.
In order to investigate the interface debonding defects detection mechanism between steel tube and concrete core of concrete-filled steel tubes (CFSTs), multi-physical fields coupling finite element models constituted of a surface mounted Piezoceramic Lead Zirconate Titanate (PZT) actuator, an embedded PZT sensor and a circular cross section of CFST column are established. The stress wave initiation and propagation induced by the PZT actuator under sinusoidal and sweep frequency excitations are simulated with a two dimensional (2D) plain strain analysis and the difference of stress wave fields close to the interface debonding defect and within the cross section of the CFST members without and with debonding defects are compared in time domain. The linearity and stability of the embedded PZT response under sinusoidal signals with different frequencies and amplitudes are validated. The relationship between the amplitudes of stress wave and the measurement distances in a healthy CFST cross section is also studied. Meanwhile, the responses of PZT sensor under both sinusoidal and sweep frequency excitations are compared and the influence of debonding defect depth and length on the output voltage is also illustrated. The results show the output voltage signal amplitude and head wave arriving time are affected significantly by debonding defects. Moreover, the measurement of PZT sensor is sensitive to the initiation of interface debonding defects. Furthermore, wavelet packet analysis on the voltage signal under sweep frequency excitations is carried out and a normalized wavelet packet energy index (NWPEI) is defined to identify the interfacial debonding. The value of NWPEI attenuates with the increase in the dimension of debonding defects. The results help understand the debonding defects detection mechanism for circular CFST members with PZT technique.

Hydrodynamic characteristics of shipping water on deck are investigated by using a simplified two-dimensional model. Formulation of the shipping water on deck leads to a nonlinear hyperbolic system of equations based on the shallow-water wave theory. Time-domain solution of these equations are obtained numerically using a finite difference method which adopts predictor-corrector method for time-marching and 2nd upwind differencing method for convection term calculation. To confirm the validity of the present numerical method, we calculated some shallow-water wave problems accompanying a bore and compared the obtained results with the analytic solutions. We found good agreements between them. Though the calculation results of shipping water on deck, we show that the shipping water flows into the deck as a rarefying wave arid grows into a bore after colliding with a deck structure. Also we examined the effects of acceleration and slope of deck and found that they have significant influences on the flow of shipping water.

In railway tunnel environment, the reliability of a high-data-rate and real-time train-to-wayside communication should be maintained especially when high-speed train moves along the track. In China and Europe, the communication frequency around 900 MHz is widely used for railway applications. At this carrier frequency band, both of the solutions based on continuously laid leaky coaxial cable (LCX) and discretely installed base-station antennas (BSAs), are applied in tunnel radio coverage. Many available works have concentrated on the radio-wave propagation in tunnels by different kinds of prediction models. Most of them solve this problem as natural propagation in a relatively large hollow waveguide, by neglecting the transmitting/receiving (Tx/Rx) components. However, within such confined areas like railway tunnels especially loaded with train, the complex communication environment becomes an important factor that would affect the quality of the signal transmission. This paper will apply a full-wave numerical method to this case, for considering the BSA or LCX, train antennas and their interacted environments, such as the locomotive body, overhead line for power supply, locomotive pantograph, steel rails, ballastless track, tunnel walls, etc.. Involving finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method and uni-axial anisotropic perfectly matched layer (UPML) technique, the entire wireless RF downlinks of BSA and LCX to tunnel space to train antenna are precisely modeled (so-called integrative modeling technique, IMT). When exciting the BSA and LCX separately, the field distributions of some cross-sections in a rectangular tunnel are presented. It can be found that the influence of the locomotive body and other tunnel environments is very significant. The field coverage on the locomotive roof plane where the train antennas mounted, seems more homogenous when the side-laying position of the BSA or LCX is much higher. Also, much smoother field coverage solution is achieved by choosing LCX for its characteristic of more homogenous electromagnetic wave radiation.

Presently, the retractable phone with a whip antenna composed of a helix and a monopole is most widely used for cellular mobile communications. However, since the length of the monopole is usually about λ/4, the strong radiated electric fields are produced in the region where the auricle of a head is contacted directly. This field distribution results in high specific absorption rates(SAR's) in the head. In this paper, SAR distributions and local SAR values for the inversely shaped phone(ISP) whose antenna arrangement is opposite to the original retractable phone(ORP) are compared with those for the ORP. This phone is accomplished by mounting the $\lambda$/4-whip antenna on the bottom, not on the top of the handset. The time-averaged field distribution in a computational space including a human model and a phone model is computed using the finite-difference time-domain(FDTD) method. SAR distributions and local SAR values for these phones are calculated with the field distributions. An anatomical head model and an approximate hand model were used to consider a real situation. From the analyzed data, it is shown that this arrangement of the antenna considerably reduces the spatial peak SAR in a human head.
Seismic modeling is used to simulate wave propagation in the earth. Although the earth's subsurface is usually semi-infinite, we cannot handle the semi-infinite model in seismic modeling because of limited computational resources. For this reason, we usually assume a finite-sized model in seismic modeling. In that case, we need to eliminate the edge reflections arising from the artificial boundaries introducing a proper boundary condition. In this study, we changed three kinds of boundary conditions (sponge boundary condition, Clayton and Engquist's absorbing boundary condition, and Higdon's transparent boundary condition) so that they can be applied in elastic wave modeling for anisotropic media. We then apply them to several models whose Poisson's ratios are different. Clayton and Engquist's absorbing boundary condition is unstable in both isotropic and anisotropic media, when Poisson's ratio is large. This indicates that the absorbing boundary condition can be applied in anisotropic media restrictively. Although the sponge boundary condition yields good results for both isotropic and anisotropic media, it requires too much computational memory and time. On the other hand, Higdon's transparent boundary condition is not only inexpensive, but also reduce reflections over a wide range of incident angles. We think that Higdon's transparent boundary condition can be a method of choice for anisotropic media, where Poisson's ratio is large.

In this paper, image reconstruction algorithm for breast cancer detection using MT(Microwave Tomography) was investigated. The breast cancer detection system under development uses 16 transmit/receive antennas. The signal waveform was a sinusoidal wave at 900 MHz. To solve the 2D inverse scattering problem, we used the 2D FDTD (Finite Difference Time Domain) method for forward calculation and LMA(Levenberg-Marquardt Algorithm) for optimization. The result of the image reconstruction using the numerical phantom by MRI(Magnetic Resonance Imaging) obtained from real patient of breast cancer showed that we can detect the position of the tumor accurately.

In this paper, we studied the propagation of the radio wave in the human body for WBAN system and proposed the path-loss models applicable in the MICS and ISM frequency band. Human Tissues are composed of complicate organ. So it is difficult to measure to insert the probe in human body. Accordingly, the equations were modelled by electromagnetic analysis using the numerical phantom based on the real human. The numerical analysis used XFDTD 6.5 of Remcom co. in commercial software based on the Finite-Difference Time-Domain method. Human body model used a standard adult Korean model developed by ETRI. The proposed channel models will be very helpful to design the WBAN system.
The crosstalk among coupled microstrip lines is the major limiting factors of signal qualities in the high-speed digital and communication equipment. In this paper, a three-dimensional finite difference time domain (FDTD) method is applied to analyze the crosstalk between the coupled microstrip lines. The proposed structures of the coupled microstrip lines are investigated to reduce the coupling in a simple way by modifying their ground plane with an optimum gap. The examples of these structures with the different sizes of the gaps on their ground plane are studied. These structures are considered as the four-port network to evaluate transmission efficiency, near- and far-end crosstalk. Gaussian pulse is excited to evaluate the frequency characteristics from dc to 30 ㎓. The transmission efficiency, near- and far-end crosstalk of each structure of the coupled microstrip lines are demonstrated. The numerical results of this study show that the majority of crosstalk is the far-end crosstalk. The usage of the optimum gap on the ground plane can reduce the far-end crosstalk of the coupled microstrip lines while the transmission efficiency is nearly equal.
