  • Deaf mutism (a hearing-impaired person and speech disorders) communicates using sign language. There are difficulties in communicating by voice. However, sign language can only be limited in communicating with people who know sign language because everyone doesn't use sign language when they communicate. In this paper, a finger language translation system is proposed and implemented as a means for the disabled and the non-disabled to communicate without difficulty. The proposed algorithm recognizes the finger language data by leap motion and self-learns the data using machine learning technology to increase recognition rate. We show performance improvement from the simulation results.

  • Fingerprint recognition is a biometric technology to identify individual by using fingerprint features such ridges and valleys. Most fingerprint systems perform the recognition based on minutiae points after acquiring a fingerprint image from contact type sensor. They have an advantage of acquiring a clear image of uniform size by touching finger on the sensor. However, they have the problems of the image quality can be reduced in case of severely dry or wet finger due to the variations of touching pressure and latent fingerprint on the sensor. To solve these problems, the contactless capturing devices for a fingerprint image was introduced in previous works. However, the accuracy of detecting minutiae points and recognition performance are reduced due to the degradation of image quality by the illumination variation. So, this paper proposes a new LDP-based fingerprint recognition method. It can effectively extract fingerprint patterns of iterative ridges and valleys. After producing histograms of the binary codes which are extracted by the LDP method, chi square distance between the enrolled and input feature histograms is calculated. The calculated chi square distance is used as the score of fingerprint recognition. As the experimental results, the EER of the proposed approach is reduced by 0.521% in comparison with that of the previous LBP-based fingerprint recognition approach.

  • In various industries, tactile recognition has been one of the important ways in displaying information because peoples like to touch and feel. Especially, how much the tactile information is efficiently recognizable is crucial for visually impaired persons in their daily lifes. However, existing design guidelines are insufficient to lead good tactile recognition. In this study, an experiment was performed to investigate proper tactile shapes (relievo / intaglio vs. filled / unfilled), sizes and depths for efficient tactile recognition. Moreover, this study scrutinized whether the recognition speed or error was varied depending on the type of displayed symbols (open vs. closed types) in tactile. The experimental results revealed that the 'relieve-filled' shape type was more rapidly recognizable than the other shapes, and the 'closed' type symbols (e.g., ${\square }$. ${\bigcirc}$) were more robustly recognizable than the 'open' type symbols (e.g, +, ^). Several design guidelines were presented based on the results. These guidelines can be applied to the design of tactile buttons in the devices that users should control them without visual attention, such as car steering wheels or MP3 players.

  • In this paper, a marionette control system using wrist and finger gestures through an IMU sensor is studied. The signals from the sensor device are conditioned and recognized, then the commands are sent to the 8 motors of the marionette via Bluetooth (5 motors control the motion of the marionette, and 3 motors control the location of the marionette). It is revealed that the degree of freedom of fingers are not independent from each other, therefore, some gestures are hardly made. Gesture mode changes for difficult postures of the fingers in cases of a lack of finger DOF are proposed. Therefore, the gesture mode change switches the assignment of gesture as required. Experimental results show that gesture mode change is successful for appropriate postures of a marionette.

  • Communication between human and machine is having been researched from last few decades and still it's a challenging task because human behavior is unpredictable. When it comes on handwritten digits almost each human has their own writing style. Handwritten digit recognition plays an important role, especially in the courtesy amounts on bank checks, postal code on mail address etc. In our study, we proposed an efficient feature extraction system for recognizing single digit number drawn by mouse or by a finger on a screen. Our proposed method combines basic image processing and reading the strokes of a line drawn. It is very simple and easy to implement in various platform as compare to the system which required high system configuration. This system has been designed, implemented, and tested successfully.

  • This paper proposes a wearable interface for a tendon-driven robotic hand prosthesis. The proposed interface is composed of a dataglove to measure finger and wrist joint angle, and a micro-control board with a wireless RF module. The interface is used for posture control of the robotic hand prosthesis. The measured joint angles by the dataglove are transferred to the main controller via the wireless module. The controller works for directly controlling the joint angle of the hand or for recognizing hand postures using a pattern recognition method such as LDA and k-NN. The recognized hand postures in this study are the paper, the rock, the scissors, the precision grasp, and the tip grasp. In experiments, we show the performances of the wearable interface including the pattern recognition method.

  • This paper is to propose the palm print recognition system using wavelet transform. The palm print is frequently used as the material for the biometric recognition system such as the finger print, iris, face, etc. Since the palm print has lots of properties which include principle line, wrinkles, ridge and so forth, the ways of the implementation of the system are various. In this paper, at first, the palm print image is acquired and then some level of wavelet transform is performed. The coefficients become to be some blocks size of M by N after divided into the horizontal, vertical, diagonal components each level. The mean values, which are calculated with values of each block, are used as the feature vector. To compare between the stored template and the acquired vectors, we adopt the PNN (Probability Neural Network) method.

  • In this paper, We proposed a novel hand-gesture recognition algorithm using concentric-circle expanding and tracing. The proposed algorithm determines region of interest of hand image through preprocessing the original image acquired by web-camera and extracts the feature of hand gesture such as the number of stretched fingers, finger tips and finger bases, angle between the fingers which can be used as intuitive method for of human computer interaction. The proposed algorithm also reduces computational complexity compared with raster scan method through referencing only pixels of concentric-circles. The experimental result shows that the 9 hand gestures can be recognized with an average accuracy of 90.7% and an average algorithm execution time is 78ms. The algorithm is confirmed as a feasible way to a useful input method for virtual reality, augmented reality, mixed reality and perceptual interfaces of human computer interaction.

  • Recently, as elderly people suffering from chronic diseases have increased and disasters such as traffic accidents have increased, urgent rescue workers and doctors need to respond effectively to such emergencies. For elderly people, the difficulty in communicating their condition especially the health condition during disaster is one of the problems in which delay on immediate handling by rescue team can cause death. Providing a solution for this problem is one of the main issues in our research. In this paper, we use the QR code to communicate the minimum personal information and medical history needed for emergency medical treatment to emergency medical personnel, and to transmit the medical history and treatment data to the doctors of the hospital through QR code and fingerprint recognition, respectively. Especially, by using both QR code of smart phone and fingerprint of individual, we can protects personal information and strengthens privacy and security of medical information by allowing only authorized physicians to check medical records of the old patient.

  • People who have hearing difficulties use sign language as the most important communication method, and they can broaden personal relations and manage their everyday lives without inconvenience through sign language. But they suffer from absence of interpolation between normal people and people who have hearing difficulties in increasing video chatting or video communication services by recent growth of internet communication. In this paper, we proposed a sign language recognition method in order to solve such a problem. In the proposed method, regions of two hands are extracted by tracking of two hands using RGB, YUV and HSI color information from a sign language image acquired from a video camera and by removing noise in the segmented images. The extracted regions of two hands are teamed and recognized by ART2 algorithm that is robust for noise and damage. In the experiment by the proposed method and images of finger number from 1 to 10, we verified the proposed method recognize the numbers efficiently.
