  • Monodispersed alumina and Mg-doped alumina fine particles were prepared by controlled hydrolysis of alkoxides. Aluminium alkoxide and magnesium alkoxide were dissolved into complex solvent which was composed of hydrophobic n-octanol and hydrophilic acetonitrile. Hydroxypropyl cellulose(HPC) was used as a dispersant for the alumina particles. The size of these prepared powders was approximately 0.3 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. In the case of sintering above 100$0^{\circ}C$, most of these prepared powders were transformed to $\alpha$-alumina. The relative density of the sintered body of these prepared powders at 1$600^{\circ}C$ was 98%. The sintered body of the Mg-doped alumina powder had more uniform grain size than that of the undoped alumina podwer.

  • Willemite powders which have been prepared by solid state reaction were easy to intermixed impurities, and particle surfaces were demaged in the progress of crushing. The above defacts were easy to accompany non-crystallization for mechanochemical effects and luminescence efficiency was deteriorated. The goal of this study improve each of defacts, and synthesize high purity and fine Mn doped willemite powders by wet and hydrothermal methods without crushing progress. It has been experimentally verified that the single phase Zn1.98Mn0.02SiO4 willemite powders which prepared by hydrothermal synthes is at 220$^{\circ}C$ for 10 hours in 2N KOH solution. The products are like needle and composition is the same with starting composition.

  • Cordierite powders were prepared from Si(OC2H5)4, Al(OC3H7i)3 and Mg(OC2H5)2 by the sol-gel method. Two different methods were applied for producing fine and homogeneous powders. One is that Si(OC2H5)4 with a lowr rate of hydrolysis was partially hydrolyzed and then Al(OC3H7i)3 and Mg(OC2H5)2 were mixed and reacted. The other is based on the simultaneous hydrolysis of these metal alkoxides using i-C4H9OH which retards the rate of hydrolysis of Al(OC3H7i)3 and Mg(OC2H5)2. It was confirmed that ifne and homogeneous powders were obtained from both methods. Also these powders were calcined at four different temperatures during two hours. X-ray diffraction patterns show only ${\mu}$-cordierite phase at 1000$^{\circ}C$, ${\mu}$-cordierite and ${\alpha}$-cordierite phases at 1100-1200$^{\circ}C$ and ${\alpha}$-cordierite phase at 1300$^{\circ}C$ respectively.

  • The hypereutectic Al-20 wt%Si powders including some amount of Cu, Fe, Mg, Mn were prepared by a gas atomization process. In order to get highly densified Al-Si bulk specimens, the as-atomized and sieved powders were extruded at $500^{\circ}C$, Microstructure and tensile properties of the extruded Al-Si alloys were investigated in this study. Relative density of the extruded samples was over 98%. Ultimate tensile strength (UTS) in stress-strain curves of the extruded powders increased after T6 heat treatments. Elongation of the samples was also increased from 1.4% to 3.2%. The fracture surfaces of the tested pieces showed a fine microstructure and the average grain size was about $1{\mu}m$.

  • We report on the effects of mixing of powders with various particle sizes on fracture toughness and wear resistance of thermally sprayed WC-10Co-4Cr coating layers fabricated by HVOF (high-velocity oxygen fuel) process. The size and the mixing ratio of powders were changed in order to get high fracture toughness and wear resistance. The mixing of small amount of coarse powders with fine powders resulted in the highest fracture toughness and wear resistance due to the lowest porosity in coating layers.

  • The preparatin of the fine TiN powders by reduction-nitridation of TiCl3-Al-N2 system was attempted in the temperature range from 350$^{\circ}$to 100$0^{\circ}C$. The formation mechanism and kinetics of TiN were examined, and the resultant TiN powder was characterized by means of XRD, PSA and SEM-EPMA methods. TiN was formed at temperatrue higher than $600^{\circ}C$. As an intermediate phase, AlTi was obtained. The apparent activation energy for the formation of TiN was approximately 4.2kcal/mole(600$^{\circ}$~90$0^{\circ}C$). The crystallite size and lattice constnat of TiN powder obtained in the temperature range from 600$^{\circ}$to 100$0^{\circ}C$ for 2h at the Al/TiCl3 molar ratio of 1.0 were 160~255A and 4.231~4.239A, respectively. According to PSA measurement, the mean particle size ranged from 14.0 to 14.8${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$.

  • Red pepper powders with variuos seed contents (0%, 10%, 20%) and particle sizes were stored at 0$^{\circ}C$, 20$^{\circ}C$, and 30$^{\circ}C$ for 90 days, and the changes in their characteristics were monitored. The initial moisture content was about 13%, and the powders were packed in 0.1 mm-thick polypropylene (PP) bags. Moisture content of each power remained constantly, so PP bags appeared to be effective to prevent moisture transmission. All the values of L*, a* and b* were higher in fine particles than in coarse particles. Storage at 0$^{\circ}C$ did not change any color values, however, overall color values devreased apparently when stored at 30$^{\circ}C$ for 90 days. Capsanthin contents decreased gradually at all storage temperatures and more rapidly at higher temperature. The contents of capsaicinoids in fine particles (49∼59 mg%) were twic as much as those in coarse particles (15∼36 mg%), and they did not change throughout the storage.

  • Ultra-fine $\beta$-SiC powders were fabricated by self-propagating high temperature synthesis process (SHS) using microwave oven. The flexural strength, fracture toughness, and hardness of hot pressed sample at 200$0^{\circ}C$ for 60 min using synthesized SiC powders, which had 2 wt% of Al2O3 and 2.5 wt% of B4C content, showed 438 MPa, 4.15MPa.m1/2 and 28 GPa, respectively. The highest strength, fracture toughness, and hardness of composites containing 4wt% of Al2O3, which had highest relative density of 99.9%, showed 458 MPa, 4.6MPa.m1/2 and 36.2 GPa, respectively.

  • To introduce flux pinning center in HTS-BSCCO system, nano-size MgO particles were uniformly distributed within the Bi-2223 grain by partial hydration of MgO. The existing method MgO doped Bi-2223 used nato-size MgO powders, which resulted in agglomeration during mixing or grain growth during heat-treatment due to the high surface energy of the fine particles. By hydration of the MgO surface, the agglomeration of the MgO powders was avoided and the size of remaining MgO core was controlled by changing hydration medium and time. The thin film obtained by spin coating of (Bi_$1.8/Pb_{0.4}$)$Sr_2$$_{Ca}$$2.2/Cu_3$ $O_{y}$ nitrate solution mixed with hydrated MgO showed the even distribution of nano-size MgO particles in the Bi-2212 grains.s.s.

  • Granulated powders, prepared from PF-5F($D_{50}=4(\mu}m$), PF-10F($D_{50}=6{\mu}m$) and PF-20F($D_{50}=10{\mu}m$) water atomized powder, were compacted, debound and sintered to evaluate the properties of sintered parts. As a result, the relative sintered density of about 97% at sintering temperature of 1423K was obtained. It can be considered that by using granulated finer particle size powder, mechanical properties of sintered parts were also improved.
