Assessing the impact of nanoclay on the permeability and geotechnical properties of fine-grained soils in landfill liners

  • Presented Article evaluates the effect of nanoclay on permeability, compressive strength, and plasticity behavior of fine-grained soil related to the Tabriz landfill site. In this regard, comprehensive experimental study was performed on taken soil samples (42 specimens) with aim of design high-performance liners for Tabriz landfill. The samples was mixed by 0% (control) 3%, 6% and 9% nanoclay and prepared in 1, 7, 14 and 28 days before testing stage. Index tests like particle-size, permeability, atterberg limits, and uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) was conducted on samples. The results show that studied soil is classified as CL in USCS classification and atterberg limits measured as LL is 37, PL is 20.67, and PI is 16.33 which increase into 75, 45, and 30. The assessment presented the LL was increased about 20.27% based on increasing in nanoclay from 0% to 9%. These variations for PL and PI were 21.77% and 18.37%, respectively. Also, the and soil's compressive strength is increase from 120 kPa to 188 kPa and permeability is estimated as 4.25×10-6 m/s which reduced into the 6.34×10-9 m/s with respect the naboclay content increases form 0% to 9%.

국산 플럭스 코어드 와이어 용접에서 입열량이 용접부의 미세조직과 인성에 미치는 영향 (A Study on the Effect of Heat Input on the Microstructure and Toughness of Weldments Made by Domestic Flux Cored Wires.)

  • In the present study, the microstructure and Charpy V notch toughness of multipass $CO_2$ FCA weldment in three different heat inputs(1-3KJ/mm)were investigated. The weldments using two different domestic FCAW wires(AWS E71T-1 and E71T-5 equivalent) in C-Mn steel were chemically analysed. The following conclusions can be inferred. 1. T-1 wire Showed a stable arc transfer, less spatter and harsh, a better bead spreading and easy slag removal, whereas T-5 wire suffered from the arc stability, which tended to increase spatter and produce a more convex bead. 2.The microsturctures of the top beads of the weldments in three different heat inputs consisted of coarse-grained boundary ferrite and Widmanstatten ferrite side plate with increasing heat inputs. The modest fraction of acicular ferrite in the two wire weldments was observed in the 2KJ/mm heat input. 3.The fine-grained reheated zones of both welds consisted of a duplex microstructure of polygonal ferrite and second phases. 4. The basic flux weldment of T-5wires showed a higher Charpy impact property than that of T-1 wires because of a higher fraction of acicular ferrite in the weld microstructure.

Unconfined compressive strength of PET waste-mixed residual soils

  • Plastic wastes, particularly polyethylene terephthalate (PET) generated from used bottled water constitute a worldwide environmental issue. Reusing the PET waste for geotechnical applications not only reduces environmental burdens of handling the waste, but also improves inherent engineering properties of soil. This paper investigated factors affecting shear strength improvement of PET-mixed residual soil. Four variables were considered: (i) plastic content; (ii) plastic slenderness ratio; (iii) plastic size; and (iv) soil particle size. A series of unconfined compression tests were performed to determine the optimum configurations for promoting the shear strength improvement. The results showed that the optimum slenderness ratio and PET content for shear strength improvement were 1:3 and 1.5%, respectively. Large PET pieces (i.e., $1.0cm^2$) were favorable for fine-grained residual soil, while small PET pieces (i.e., $0.5cm^2$) were favorable for coarse-grained residual soil. Higher shear strength improvement was obtained for PET-mixed coarse-grained residual soil (148%) than fine-grained residual soils (117%). The orientation of plastic pieces in soil and frictional resistance developed between soil particles and PET surface are two important factors affecting the shear strength performance of PET-mixed soil.

농촌도로 노상토 재료의 공학적 특성과 CBR값의 관계 분석 (Correlation Analysis Between Geotechnical Properties and CBR Values of Subgrade Materials in Rural Road Construction)

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the relationships between the geotechnical properties and the CBR values of the subgrade materials used in the rural roal construction. A total of 77 Soil samples was investigated and tested from 45 agricultural and industrial sites in Kyungpook Province. The results obtained are as follows : 1. The maximum dry densities of the coarse grained soils are larger than those of the fine grained soils. The optimum moisture contents of the coarse grained soils are smaller than those of the fine grained scils. 2. The mean values of the medified CBR values of the soils classified by the USCS, are decreased in the order of GP-GM, SW-SM, GM, SC, SP-SM, ML, CL-ML. And, those classified by the AASHTO are decreased in the order of A-i-a, A-i-b, A-2-4, A-3, A-4, A-6, A-7-6. 3. As passing percentage of No.200 sieve is increased, the CBR Value of soils is decreased gradually. 4. As the optimum moisture contents of the soil is increased, the CBR values is decresed the maximum dry density of the soils increased, the CBR values increased. 5. The CBR values are decreased as Group-lndex(GI) are increased. And Activity(A) is showed no relation with the CBR values. 6. The relation ships between the modified CBR value and standand proctor compaction CBR value at 95% compaction ratio can he expressed as the following equation : Y(CERmod)= 2.3638 + 0.8922X(CBR25).

석회노분과 석회로 처리된 세립토의 단기적 역학특성 비교 (Comparison of Short-term Mechanical Characteristics of Fine-grained Soils Treated with Lime Kiln Dust and Lime)

  • 인디아나주 도로국 (INDOT, Indiana Department of Transportation)에서는 부분적으로 1990년대 초반부터 토사개량(지반 안정화는 아님)에 대한 저비용의 건설재료로서 석회노분을 사용해왔다. 그러나 석회노분을 포함한 흙의 강도향상은 설계과정에서 노상의 안정화계산에 반영되지 않았다. 따라서 본 연구는 석회노분이 수화된 석회와 유사한 공학적 성질을 지닌 재료인지를 평가하기 위하여 수행되었으며, 인디아나주에서 흔히 접할수 있는 A-4, A-6, A-7-6와 같이 세립분이 우세한 다양한 흙과 조합하여 석회노분의 역학적 장점들을 평가하기 위해 일련의 실내실험들을 수행하였다. 본 연구에서는 아터버그한계, 표준다짐, 일축압축, CBR, 체적 안정성과 회복탄성계수등의 실험들을 수행하였으며 그 결과 비처리토에 비해 처리토의 경우 60-400% 정도의 범위로 일축압축강도가 증가하였다. 비혼합토에 대한 CBR 값의 범위가 3-18인 것에 반하여, 혼합토에 대한 CBR 값들은25-70의 범위내에 있다. 또한, 일반적으로 혼합토의 회복탄성계수도 상당히 증가하는 것으로 관찰되었다. 이상의 결과는 석회노분은 수화된 석회에 대한 대안으로서 실용적이고 경제적인 재료이며 세립토의 강도를 향상시키며 작업성을 향상시킬 수 있음을 암시한다.

High-Strength Mg-PSZ of Fine Grains Containing TiC Particles

  • Partially stabilized zironia with magnesia (Mg-PSZ) is known as one of the toughest monolithic ceramics. However, the very large grain sizes obtained after sintering at a high solution-heat treatment temperature in the cubic region of the phase diagram limit the strength of this material rather modest. In this study fine-grained Mg-PSZ materials were fabricated by adding TiC particles as a dispersed phase. Samples were hot-pressed at $1750^{\circ}C$ and then annealed at $1420^{\circ}C$ for various times. Grain growth was retarded severely by the TiC particles resulting in grain sizes smaller by more than one order of magnitude than those of PSZ without TiC. The fine-grained microstructure lead to doubly-increased fracture strength while maintaining the same level of high fracture toughness as that of conventional Mg-PSZ without TiC particles.

Investigation on failure assessment method for nuclear graphite components

  • Super fine-grained graphite is a type of advanced nuclear graphite which was developed for Molten Salt Reactor (MSR). It is necessary to establish a failure assessment method used for nuclear graphite components in MSR. A modified assessment approach based on ASME BPVC-III-5_2017 is presented. The new approach takes a new parameter, KIC, into account and abandons the parameter, grain size, which is unrealistic for super fine-grained graphite as the computation is enormous if we use conventional methods. Three methodologies (KTA 3232, ASME, New approach) were also evaluated by theoretical prediction and experimental verification. The results indicated the new developed code can be used for design and failure assessment of super fine-graphite components and has more extensive applicability.

침강수주에서 부유된 광물성 미립자의 특성 (Characteristics of Suspended Fine-Grained Particles in Settling Columns)

  • 부유된 광물성 미립자는 강, 저수지 그리고 호수의 유속 및 운송력이 감소하는 곳에서 침전되며, 다른 중금속들에 의해 오염된다. 그 실예들이 퇴적물의 준설, 수질오염, 운하 및 수공구조물의 유지관리의 문제이다. 이런 침전 문제들을 다루기 위해선 물에 녹아있는 이온(NaOH, HCl, NaCl)의 첨가 및 밀도의 변화 아래 점착성 퇴적물의 물리-화학적인 특성의 이해가 필요하다. 왜냐하면 미립자인 점착성 퇴적물은 물리-화학적인 영향 때문에 쉽게 응집현상이 일어나며, 다른 특성을 갖게 되기 때문이다. 본 실험은 광물성 미립자(alumina 와 Quartz)를 가지고 담수 및 염분을 함유한 침강수주 안에서 실시되었다. 정수 중에 부유된 미립자의 침강속도는 압력센서(최대 10 mbar)로 측정되었다. 초기 농도 20,000 mg/l)까지 quartz의 침강 속도는 증가하였으며, 그 후 감소하였다. Quartz의 침강 속도는 산성에서 강한 응집현상 때문에 증가하였으며 알칼리성에서는 낮게 측정되었다. 그러나 alumina의 침강 속도는 그 정반대의 현상을 보였다.

ECAP으로 제조된 초미세립 순동의 동적 변형거동 (Dynamic Deformation Behavior of Ultra-Fine-Grained Pure Coppers Fabricated by Equal Channel Angular Pressing)

  • Dynamic deformation behavior of ultra-fine-grained pure coppers fabricated by equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) was investigated in this study. Dynamic torsional tests were conducted on four copper specimens using a torsional Kolsky bar, and then the test data were analyzed by their microstructures and tensile properties. The 1-pass ECAP'ed specimen consisted of fine dislocation cell structures elongated along the ECAP direction, which were changed to very fine, equiaxed subgrains of 300~400 nm in size as the pass number increased. The dynamic torsional test results indicated that maximum shear stress increased with increasing ECAP pass number. Adiabatic shear bands were not found at the gage center of the dynamically deformed torsional specimen of the 1- or 4-pass ECAP'ed specimen, while some weak bands were observed in the 8-pass ECAP'ed specimen. These findings suggested that the grain refinement according to the ECAP was very effective in strengthening of pure coppers, and that ECAP'ed coppers could be used without serious reduction in fracture resistance under dynamic torsional loading as adiabatic shear bands were hardly formed.

포천-의정부 일대에 분포하는 화강암류의 산상과 암석화학 (Occurrence and petrochemistry of the granites in the Pocheon-Euijeongbu area)

  • 연구지역은 서울에서 포천 북부일대에 분포하며 경기 편마암 복합체를 관입한 대보 화강암질 저반의 중부에 해당한다. 주요 구성암상은 조립질 흑운모 화강암과 세립질 흑운모 화강암이다. 전자는 대체로 주변부와 중앙부를 이룬 회색 화강암(Gg)과 담홍색 화강암(Gp)로 각각 구분되며, 세립질 화강암은 소규모의 암주상으로 Gg를 관입하였다. Gg는 회색을 띠는 각섬석 흑운모 화강암으로서 염기성 분결체(basic clot)와 변성암류의 포획체가 자주 발달하며, Gp는 연한 담홍색을 띠는 석류석 흑운모 화강암으로 산점상의 석류석과 간혹 염기성 분결체를 수반함이 일반적인 특징이다. 이들은 모우드 분석에서 화강암에 도시되며 티탄철석 계열이나 자철석 계열에 해당한다. 흑운모 연령측정(K/Ar법)결과 Gg와Gp는 166와 165Ma, 세립질 화강암은 133Ma로 각각 쥬라기 중기와 백악기 초기에 해당한다. 이들은 뚜렷한 분화경향을 보이는 일부 저(met-)와 과일루미나암질(peraluminous)로서, 칼크-알칼리 계열에 속한다. 광물학적 및 지구화학적 특징에 의하면 이들은 S-형(티틴철석 계열)과 일부 Ⅰ-형(자철석 계열)에 속하며, 섭입과 관련된 대륙 주변 부의 마그마 홍 lwlrn조저 환경에서 비교적 고정된 근원성분의 용융으로 형성된 암체이다.
