  • Although guided-waves are very efficient for long-range nondestructive damage inspection, it is not easy to extract meaningful pulses of small magnitude out of noisy signals. The ultimate goal of this research is to develop an efficient signal processing technique for the current guided-wave technology. The specific contribution of this investigation towards achieving this goal, a two-stage Gabor pulse-based matching pursuit algorithm is proposed : rough approximations with a set for predetermined parameters characterizing the Gabor pulse and fine adjustments of the parameters by optimization. The parameters estimated from the measured signal are then used to assess not only the location but also the size of a crack existing in a rod. To validate the effectiveness of the proposed method, the longitudinal wave-based damage detection in rods is considered. To estimate the crack size, Love's theory for the dispersion of longitudinal waves is employed.

  • After thermal aging treatment at 693 K for 322 hours, any discernable precipitation could not be found in the $13{\sim}22$ Cr ODS steels, but showing an increase in SP-DBTT and reduction in upper shelf energy. The degree of aging embrittlement increases with Cr content such that the increases in SP-DBTT are 10, 50 and 73 K in 13, 16 and 19 Cr ODS steel, respectively. Amount of hardening also increased linearly as a function of Cr content. Based on the TEM observation, the origin of hardening must be related to the invisibly fine size of Cr-rich ${\acute{\alpha}}-phase$ (<1 nm).

  • Studied was impact assessment of sea dike construction in Saemankeum. To represent complexity of the geometry and topography of the region a flexible finite grid system are adopted. Combined fine and coarse meshes based on automatic mesh generator were applied in pre-processing. A nonlinear periodic finite element model. TEANL, was implied in this analysis, which gave good results compared to the observed data. It was predicted that the front region of dike connecting Shinsi-Karyeok-Daehang-Pyunsan will behave as a closed rectangular bay with wide width, which may affect significantly to the circulation and dispersion mechanism in the region.

  • We have studied the effect of C/Ti atomic ratio of TiCx (x=0.5, 0.75 and 1.0) raw powder on the properties of the Ti-Mo-WTiC sintered hard alloy. The decrease of C/Ti atomic ratio accelerated the densification in the sintering process. The hardness was remarkably improved up to 1350HV with decreasing the C/Ti atomic ratio because of increase of TiCx phase volume content and its fine dispersion. From the results of electro-chemical tests in acid and 3% NaCl solutions, it was obvious that every alloy had excellent corrosion resistance, which meant about 200 times better than that of WC-Co cemented carbide.

  • Austenitic stainless steel has good weldability but is sensitive to hot cracking such as solidification crack and liquation crack. In this study, the specimens of dissimilar metals made between austenitic stainless steel and Al-brass were welded by GTAW process using four different filler metals. Cracks were detected in the heat-affected zone of the stainless steel when welded with CuAl, CuSn and NiCu filler metals, but no cracks were detected a Ni filler metal was used. The cracks propagated along the grain boundary in the heat affected zone near the fusion line to base metal of 316L stainless steel. The cracks were located inside the weld bead with very fine hairline crack. All cracks initiated at the fusion line and moved forward in the base metal. From energy dispersion spectroscopy (EDS), Cu peak was detected only in the crack-opening area.

  • As the heat dissipation problem is increased in 3D multi flip chip packages, an improvement of thermal conductivity in bonding interfaces is required. In this study, the effect of alumina filler addition was investigated in non-conductive paste(NCP). The fine alumina filler having average particles size of 400 nm for the fine pitch interconnection was used. As the alumina filler content was increased from 0 to 60 wt%, the thermal conductivity of the cured product was increased up to 0.654 W/mK at 60 wt%. It was higher value than 0.501 W/mK which was reported for the same amount of silica. It was also found out that the addition of fine sized alumina filler resulted in the smaller decrease in thermal conductivity than the larger sized particles. The viscosity of NCP with alumina addition was increased sharply at the level of 40 wt%. It was due to the increase of the interaction between the filler particles according to the finer particle size. In order to achieve the appropriate viscosity and excellent thermal conductivity with fine alumina fillers, the highly efficient dispersion process was considered to be important.

  • The effect of carbon addition on the microstructures and mechanical properties of $Ni_3Al$ and TiAl intermetallic alloys have been characterized. It is shown that carbon is not only an efficient solid solution strengthener in $Ni_3Al$ and TiAl, it is also an efficient precipitation strengthener by fine dispersion of carbide. Transmission electron microscope investigation has been performed on the particle-dislocation interactions in $Ni_3Al$ and TiAl intermetallics containing various types of fine precipitates. In an $L1_2$-ordered $Ni_3Al$ alloy with 4 mol.% of chromium and 0.2~3.0 mol.% of carbon, fine octahedral precipitates of $M_{23}C_6$ type carbide, which has the cube-cube orientation relationship with the matrix, appear during aging. Typical Orowan loops are formed in $Ni_3Al$ containing fine dispersions of $M_{23}C_6$ particles. In the L10-ordered TiAl containing 0.1~2.0 mol.% carbon, TEM observations revealed that needle-like precipitates, which lie only in one direction parallel to the [001] axis of the $L1_0$ matrix, appear in the matrix and preferentially at dislocations. Selected area electron diffraction (SAED) patterns analyses have shown that the needle-shaped precipitate is $Ti_3AlC$ of perovskite type. The orientation relationship between the $Ti_3AlC$ and the $L1_0$ matrix is found to be $(001)_{Ti3AlC}//(001)_{L10\;matrix}$ and $[010]_{Ti3AlC}//[010]_{L10\;matrix}$. By aging at higher temperatures or for longer period at 1073 K, plate-like precipitates of $Ti_2AlC$ with a hexagonal structure are formed on the {111} planes of the $L1_0$ matrix. The orientation relationship between the $(0001)_{Ti2AlC}//(111)_{L10\;matrix}$ is and $[1120]_{Ti2AlC}//[101]_{L10\;matrix}$. High temperature strength of TiAl increases appreciably by the precipitation of fine carbide. Dislocations bypass the carbide needles at further higher temperatures.

  • The surface treated hydroxypropyl methylcellulose(HPMC) which could adjust the soluble time was synthesized when 40 wt % glyoxal solution and $KH_2PO_4$ were sprayed and reacted. And also, the solution dynamic at different ratios of two adding agents were identified If the surface of HPMC was treated with only glyoxal, the dispersion characteristics at different ratios of two adding agents were identified If the surface of HPMC was treated with only glyoxal, the dispersion was observed in the neutral solution and the viscosity was increased after directly dissolved as the solution become alkali condition. But the fine-powder type of HPMC which reacted with glyoxal and $KH_2PO_4$ was dispersed regardless of pH of solution and observed that it was dissolved and its viscosity increased after elapsing some time. With increasing amount of glyoxal and $KH_2PO_4$, the soluble time was delayed. The reaction condition was about 60 min at $75{\sim}85^{\circ}C$. Especially, the removal process of organic solvent after reaction was not required due to reaction under water solution without organic during glyoxal and $KH_2PO_4$ treatment. And also, the HPMC which could adjust the soluble rate in water or organic solvent by changing the degree of substitution of HPMC was synthesized.
