  • $TiO_2$ impregnated stainless steel fiber photocatalysts ($TiO_2/SSF$) were fabricated to overcome inherent problems of powdery $TiO_2$ photocatalysts in water treatment. Adhesion strength of the impregnated $TiO_2$ was examined using an ultrasonic-cleaner. Photocatalytic activity was evaluated through decomposition experiment of methylene blue and formic acid. Bactericidal efficiency was evaluated through sterilization experiment of E. Coli and Vibrio Vulnificus. Adhesion strength of the impregnated $TiO_2$ was so high that more than 95% was left over even after the treatment in an ultrasonic-cleaner for 30 min. Methylene blue and formic acid were decomposed as much as 60% and 38% of the initial concentration and more than 99.9% of E. Coli and Vibrio Vulnificus were killed after 1 hour exposure to the prepared photocatalyst under UV irradiation. In the case of decomposition of formic acid, decomposition ratio increased if oxidants were added. Especially the decomposition ratio increased as high as 80% when hydrogen peroxide was added as an oxidant.

  • The objective of this study was to develop oral matrix tablets for the sustained release of vitamin C. In this study hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) has been utilized as an excipient, as it is one of the most widely used polymers, for use during long periods of time in formations. The vitamin C tablet formulation depends on the molecular weight and concentration of sustained-delivery in HPMC. Anti-oxidants have been added as a dissolution medium in order to prevent vitamin C degradation in water. The dissolution test was carried out in a distilled water medium, and the release model equation was applied to analyze the vitamin C release pattern. The results demonstrated that the release and lasting power of vitamin C tablets, containing HPMC, lasted for more than 12 h.

  • Thin electric insulation layers were coated on aluminum plates and aluminum condenser cases by plasma polymerization of HMDSO+$O_2$. Electric resistances of the films were higher than 1.0 M$\Omega$ if they are thicker than 0.5 ${\mu}m$ independently of the type of films but their surface morphologies and adhesion strengths were dependent on the process conditions. Deposition rate and adhesion strength of the films were dependent on $O_2$/HMDSO flow ratio and discharge power. The best result was obtained at $O_2$/HMDSO flow ratio of 4 and discharge power of 60 W. Adhesion strength could also be highly improved if aluminum was pre-treated in boiling water for 30 min through the formation of Al-O-Si bonding between the film and the aluminum surface. The coated films showed excellent chemical and thermal resistances.

  • Organic solvent-based enteric coating technology using hydroxypropyl methylcellulose phthalate (HPMCP) has been developed for many years due to low water solubility of HPMCP. In this work, aqueous HPMCP nanoparticles (HPMCP-NPs) were prepared by neutralization emulsification method using HPMCP powder and ammonium hydroxide (NH40H) in the absence of any organic solvent and emulsifier. • [ $M/Fe_2O_3$ ] (M=Rh, Ce and Zr) mixed oxides were prepared using urea method to develop a medium for chemical hydrogen storage by their redox cycles. And their redox behaviors by repeated cycles were studied using temperature programmed reaction(TPR) technique. Additives such as Rh, Ce and Zr were added to iron oxides in order to lower the reaction temperature for reduction by hydrogen and re-oxidation by water-splitting. From the results, concentration of urea used as a precipitant had little effect on particle size and reduction property of iron oxide. TPR patterns of iron oxide consisted of two reduction peaks due to the course of $Fe_2O_3\;{\rightarrow}\;Fe_3O_4\;{\rightarrow}\;Fe$. The results of repeated redox tests showed that Rh added to iron oxide have an effect on lowering the re-oxidation temperature by water-splitting. Meanwhile, Ce and Zr additives played an important role in prevention of deactivation by repeated cycles. Finally, Fe-oxide(Rh, Ce, Zr) sample added with Rh, Ce and Zr showed the lowest re-oxidation temperature by water-splitting and maintained high $H_2$ recovery in spite of the repeated redox cycles. Consequently, it is expected that Fe-oxide(Rh, Ce, Zr) sample can be a feasible medium for chemical hydrogen storage using redox cycle of iron oxide.

  • Iodine-sulfur(IS) hydrogenation production process consists of three sections, which are so called a Bunsen reaction section, a HI decomposition section and a $H_2SO_4$ decomposition section as a closed cycle. For highly efficient operation of a Bunsen reaction section, we investigated the phase separation characteristics of $H_2SO_4-HI-H_2O-I_2$ system into two liquid phases($H_2SO_4$-rich phase and $HI_x$-rich phase) in the high temperature ranges, mainly from 353 to 393 K, and in the $H_2SO_4/HI/H_2O/I_2$ molar ratio of $1/2/14{\sim}30/0.3{\sim}13.50$. The desired results for the minimization of impurities in each phase were obtained in conditions with the higher temperature and the higher $I_2$ molar composition. On the basis of the distribution of $H_2O$ to each phase, it is appeared that the affinity between $HI_x$ and $H_2O$ was more superior to that between $H_2SO_4$ and $H_2O$.

  • Redox characteristics of cobalt oxide-based oxygen carriers were tested for chemical-looping combustion. Cobalt oxide was chosen as active metal oxide and $CoAl_2O_4$ was compared with YSZ(yttria-stabilized zirconia) as a binder. Cobalt oxide/$CoAl_2O_4$ was prepared by sol-gel method. Hydrogen fuel was reacted with metal oxide and then the reduced metal was successively oxidized by air. The effects of reaction temperature were measured and the regenerabilies during 10 cycles were examined by a TGA. In regenerability of cobalt oxide/YSZ and cobalt oxide/$CoAl_2O_4$, after they showed above 90% conversion in first reduction, they were stabilized in about 70-75% conversion. From reaction rate constant obtained, the activation energies of cobalt oxide/YSZ in oxidation and reduction were 51.47kJ/mol and 7.71kJ/mol respectively.

  • The partial reduction and water splitting properties of metal substituted ferrite mediums for two-step thermochemical hydrogen production, were carried out by TPR/O(Temperature programmed reduction/oxidation) method at a temperature of below 1173 K and under atmospheric pressure. $ZrO_2$ was added to the ferrite as a binder to prevent the sintering. As the results, the reactivity of the metal species added to the ferrite mediums decreased in the order of Cu>Co>Ni>Mn, on the basis of water-splitting temperature. It was also found that the produced hydrogen amounts in the water-splitting step on partial reduced mediums were corresponding to the consumed hydrogen amounts in the previously partial reduction step.
