  • Objective: We propose to apply color information to facilitate finding books in the library. Background: Currently, books are classified in the basis of a decimal classification system and a call number in the library. Users find a book using the call number. However, this classification system causes various difficulties. Method: In a process analysis and survey study, we identify what the real problem is and where the problem is occurred. To solve the real problems, we derived a new search method using color information. We conducted a comparative experiment with 48 participants to see whether the new method can show higher performance. Results: The new method using color information showed faster time and higher subjective rating scores than current call number method. Also, the new method showed faster time regardless of the skill level while the call number method showed time differences in terms of the skill level. Conclusion: The effectiveness of the proposed method was verified by experiments. Users will be able to find the desired book without difficulty. This method can improve the quality of service and satisfaction of library use. Application: Our book search method can be applied as a book search tool in a real public library. We hope that the method can provide higher satisfaction to users.

Library has been playing a role of social media by providing us with materials such as books and magazines, and with a place for reading, studying, getting lectures, etc. In this paper, we present a method for finding candidates of groups of the library's patrons who share interest areas by utilizing the loan records, which are obtainable in every library. Such a homogeneous group can become a candidate for a study group, a community for exchange ideas, and other activity group. We apply the method to a collection of loan records of a university library, find some problems to be solved, and propose measures for more detailed solutions. Even though the potential group finding problem still remains a lot of issues to be solved, its potential importance is very high and thus to be studies even more for future applications.

  • In this paper, we will show that a control search methodology is a alternative method of a sequential search which is difficult in finding books for arrangement at library or a bookstore when books are out of place. To solve the problem of the sequential search, we apply a edge operator and the Hough Transform to boundary of a taken photograph image book. We generate histogram by a projected image from boundary range of selected books and select title areas from this and possible areas which are a character number of title, authors, a publishing company and an array sequence. Finally, we can select the final possible area of a book location by a curve fitting and a regression line extraction, and show utility through experiment.

Therefore, libraries spend a lot of time and effort to introduce various materials to their users and recommend suitable books. Meanwhile, various organizations other than libraries also publish recommended reading lists, and these lists reflect the intentions of the entity that selects the recommended books. The purpose of this study is finding out how the recommended book lists of libraries differ from the recommended reading lists of non-library organizations. To achieve this, the study limited the scope to 'teenagers', who are the main target audience for book recommendations in many organizations, and compared the recommended book lists of libraries and non-library organizations in terms of (1) the selection criteria for recommended books, (2) the characteristics of recommended books, and (3) the way of providing recommended book lists. Through this analysis, the study identified the characteristics and limitations of library recommended book lists and discussed areas for improvement.
