A Study for Building Service Quality Information System(SQIS) (서비스품질 정보시스템(SQIS) 설계에 관한 연구)

  • As service firms continue to seek unique sources of sustainable competitive advantage, service quality has been discussed as a potential alternative to traditional skills and sources. The information of customers is generally believed to be a key component in creating corporate responsiveness to customer requests. In order to develop and maintain long-term close relationships with customers(CRM), service firms need to build an effective and ongoing service quality information system(SQIS). Service firms that formally collect customer-related information and internal service quality information were to be more responsive. The purpose of the present study is twofold. 1. How to nicely get the information on the service quality. 2. How to build a SQIS. One of numerous examples from financial service-sector firms is given to show that SQIS can be developed to improve service quality. This paper investigates SQIS of a Korean commercial bank as an example. Implications and strategies for building an effective SQIS for financial service-sector firms are discussed, and directions for future research are indicated.

  • In dynamic management environment, CEO must make an efficient decision with information & knowledge management systems based on IT(Information Technology). As a key component to cope with this current, we suggest the business performance analysis system based on KDD(Knowledge Discovery in Databases). We consider the theoretical model that is composited both Value-Added in respect of stakeholder and Economic Value-Added in respect of shareholder. Additionally we use DBMS and data mining method using Genetic Algorithms as physical model. To demonstrate the performance of the business performance analysis system, we analyse a domestic motors industry. The empirical case is based on the financial data of KISFAS(Korea Investors Services Financial Analysis System) database. The samples included in the study consist of H motors/S motors industry over the 16-year from 1981 to 1996.

  • Risk financing is defined as the methods applied to fund risk treatment and the financial consequences of risk. It is a major component of the transfer of risk and the retention of risk which are, in turn, parts of the risk treatment process. This study applied the general guidelines on risk financing to product liability risk. Product liability risk occurs when potential defects in the process of design, production, and distribution lead to accidents resulting in fatal, financial, and environmental loss. Risk on product liability may be financed in many different ways, each of which may be used singularly or in combination. The most popular and recommendable way suggested in the guidelines is the retention or use of reserves, transfer, credit or insurance.

Liquidity Risk and Asset Returns : The Case of the Korean Stock Market

  • This paper investigates various channels through which liquidity can affect stock returns and examines whether behavioral explanation for liquidity risk is reasonable. First, we examine whether liquidity level (average liquidity) plays a significant role in determining asset returns. The result is consistent with the hypothesis that a stock with higher average illiquidity will have a higher expected return. Second, we focus on the argument that liquidity has a non-diversifiable systematic component. If systemic liquidity has a different impact across individual securities, a stock that is more sensitive to systematic liquidity will have a higher expected return. The results of various tests are inconsistent with each other, not completely supporting the argument. Finally, the intra-market tests in Korea support the behavioral explanation for the liquidity premium, and the effect is stronger in the liquidity level than in the liquidity beta related to systematic liquidity.

  • We suggest a Business Performance Information System with Knowledge Discovery in Databases(KDD) as a key component of integrated information and knowledge management system. The proposed system measures business performance by considering both VA(Value-Added), which represents stakeholder's point of view and EVA(Economic Value-Added), which represents shareholder's point of view. In modeling of Business Performance Information System, we apply the following KDD processes : Data Warehouse for consistent management of a performance data, On-Line Analytic Processing(OLAP) for multidimensional analysis, Genetic Algorithms for exploring and finding dominant managing factors and Analytic Hierarchy Process(AHP) for applying expert's knowledge and experience. To demonstrate the performance of the system, we conducted a case study using financial data of Korean automobile industry over 16 years from 1981 to 1996, which is taken from database of KISFAS(Korea Investors Services Financial Analysis System).

  • High-frequency data are now prevalent in financial time series. As a functional data arising from high-frequency financial time series, we are concerned with the intraday volatility to which functional principal component analysis (FPCA) is applied in order to achieve a dimension reduction. A review on FPCA and R function is made and high-frequency KOSPI volatility is analysed as an application.

Principal Component Analysis on the Theory of Corporate Cash Holdings for Korean Chaebol Firms (주성분분석을 활용한 국내 재벌계열사들의 재무적 현금보유이론에 대한 검정)

  • This study conducted empirical tests on contemporary finance theories for corporate cash holdings, such as trade-off, pecking order, and agency theory. There is ongoing debate on the possibility of excess cash savings by domestic firms, including chaebols in the Korean capital markets. Thus, it may be worthy to identify any financial characteristics based on each aforementioned theory as an extension of previous studies on similar subjects. Two primary hypotheses were postulated and tested, and the following empirical results were obtained. First, principal component analysis (PCA) provides evidence that nine out of the twenty explanatory variables showed a significant influence on the level of corporate cash holdings, such as cash conversion cycle in trade-off theory and leverage in pecking order theory. Second, the chaebol firms that decreased cash holdings after global financial turmoil may be affected by financial factors that include investment opportunities and foreign ownership according to the PCA. The results may reinforce the outcomes derived from previous research on corporate cash holdings. Based on the robust results, large firms in advanced or emerging capital markets could approach the optimal level of the cash reserves.

The Effect of Initial Margin on Long-run and Short-run Volatilities in Japan

  • This paper examines the effect of initial margin requirements on long-run and short-run volatilities in the Japanese stock market using the Component GARCH model. Our empirical results show that when we do not divide the margin requirement into positive and negative changes, increasing margin requirement is effective for reducing long-run volatility, while not effective in short-run volatility. However, separating the positive and negative changes in margin requirements reveals the fact that the negative changes in margin requirements decrease long-run volatilities, while the higher margin requirements increase short-run volatilities in the Japanese stock market. This suggests that if the Japanese financial authorities intend to increase margin level to reduce volatility, unexpectedly, short-run volatility would be even higher.
