Direct treatment of municipal wastewater by forward osmosis (FO) process was evaluated in terms of water flux decline, reverse salt diffusion, pollutants rejection and concentration efficiency by using synthetic seawater as the draw solution. It was found that when operating in PRO mode (active layer facing the draw solution), although the FO membrane exhibited higher osmotic water flux, more severe flux decline and reverse salt diffusion was also observed due to the more severe fouling of pollutants in the membrane support layer and accompanied fouling enhanced concentration polarization. In addition, although the water flux decline was shown to be lower for the FO mode (active layer facing the feed solution), irreversible membrane fouling was identified in both PRO and FO modes as the water flux cannot be restored to the initial value by physical flushing, highlighting the necessity of chemical cleaning in long-term operation. During the 7 cycles of filtration conducted in the experiments, the FO membrane exhibited considerably high rejection for TOC, COD, TP and $NH_4{^+}-N$ present in the wastewater. By optimizing the volume ratio of seawater draw solution/wastewater feed solution, a concentration factor of 3.1 and 3.7 was obtained for the FO and PRO modes, respectively. The results demonstrated the validity of the FO process for direct treatment of municipal wastewater by using seawater as the draw solution, while facilitating the subsequent utilization of concentrated wastewater for bioenergy production, which may have special implications for the coastline areas.

Discharging untreated bilge to the ocean is a cause of marine pollution. In general, bilge water contains free and/or emulsified forms of oil. Free form of oil can easily be separated by gravimetric flotation and/or proper filtration processes. However, those simple physicochemical processes could not separate emulsified oil without adding proper chemicals. Electrolytic flotation is one of promising technologies able to fulfill the effluent standard requirement, which is below 15 ppm of oil content. In this research, Electrochemical process consisting of electrochemical flotation basin was studied for the treatment of emulsified oil. In order to estimate, the effectiveness of oil separation equipment influent concentration of oil and HRT(Hydraulic retention time) were considered. Also, lab-scale electrochemical process was designed and operated in the condition of various HRT, current density, and electrode gap. Through the research, following results were obtained. From the experiment of bench scale electrochemical treatment process, it was demonstrated that the emulsified oil was treated effectively and the removal efficiency of emulsified oil from wastewater was increased with HRT and current density.

Comparison of removal performance between reverse osmosis(RO), nanofiltration(NF), electrocoagulation(EC) and electroadsorption(EA) for removal of nitrate and fluoride often exceeded the limits of water quality in small water treatment plants. Removals of nitrate and fluoride were 72-92% and 74-85% in RO, 5-15% and 1% in NF, 99% and 44% in EA equipped with MWCNT coated electrodes, 82% and 77% in EA equipped with Cu-MWCNT electrodes, and 11-46% and 69-99% in EC. Consequently, high removals of both ions were anticipated in RO. Effective removal of both ions are possible for EC, but great production of sludge is a big burden. EA equipped with the MWCNT electrodes showed a great fluctuation in removal efficiency, and electrode stability should be upgraded.

Nano-Particles are influenced on the environmental protection and human health. The relationships between transient vehicle operation and nano-particle emissions are not well-known, especially for diesel passenger vehicles with DPF. In this study, a diesel passenger vehicle was measured on condition of DPF regeneration and no regeneration on a chassis dynamometer test bench. The particulate matter (PM) emission from this vehicle was measured by its number, size and mass measurement. The mass of the total PM was evaluated with the standard gravimetric measurement method while the total number and size concentrations were measured on a NEDC driving cycle using Condensation Particle Counter (CPC) and EEPS. Total number concentration by CPC was $1.5{\times}10^{1l}N/km$, which was 20% of result by EEPS. This means about 80% of total particle emission is consist of volatile and small-sized particles(<22nm). During regeneration, particle emission was $6.2{\times}10^{12}N/km$, was emitted 400 times compared with the emission before regeneration. As for the particle size of $22{\sim}100nm$ was emitted mainly, showing peak value of near 40nm in size. This means regeneration decreased the mean size of particles. Regarding regeneration, PM showed no change while the particle number showed about 6 times difference between before and after regeneration. It seems that the regeneration influences on particle number emissions are related to DPF-fill state and filtration efficiency.
Innovations in the biofiltration process can provide effective solutions to overcome crucial water pollution problems. The elimination of pollutants is a result of the combined effects of biological oxidation, adsorption and filtration processes. This research aims to evaluate the performance of quartz sand biofiltration for removing total suspended solids, turbidity, color, organic matter, and ammonium from polluted river water and develop an empirical model for designing quartz sand biofilters for the treatment of polluted river water. Experiments were conducted using two biofilter units filled with quartz sand as filter media. A set of experiments were performed to evaluate the effect of hydraulic retention time on biofilter performance in removing water contaminants. The kinetics of organic matter removal were also determined to describe the performance of the biofilter. The results show that biofiltration can significantly remove river water pollutants. Removal efficiency depends on the applied hydraulic retention time. At a hydraulic retention time of two hours, removal efficiencies of total organics, ammonium and total suspended solids were up to 78%, 82%, and 91%, respectively. A model for designing quartz sand biofiltration has been developed from the experimental data.
Effects of available food on growth of commercially cultured Pacific oysters, Crassostrea gigas in Goseong Bay on the south coast were studied using a numerical model. levels of total protein, carbohydrate and lipid in particulate organic matter in the water column as well as chlorophyll a concentration were determined for estimating total available food for oyster growth. Environmental parameters including water temperature, salinity and total suspended solid were also monitored for the model. Oyster growth was also monitored by means of measuring shell length and tissue wet weight increase on a monthly basis. Simulation results from the numerical model indicated that chlorophyll a is not a good representative of available food for the oysters in Goseong Bay. In contrast, available food in the water column measured by filtration of the organic particles and analyzed in terms of total lipids, carbohydrates and protein was well matched with simulated oyster growth in the Bay which is similar to observed growth. The model also suggested that oysters have relatively low retention efficiency of $50\%$ or less. This result indicates that oysters in the bay utilize only a part of food particle available in the water column, as reported in other studies.
The expression of the Paenibacillus sp. A11 cyclodextrinase (CDase) gene using the pUC 18 vector in Escherichia coli JM 109 resulted in the formation of an insoluble CDase protein in the cell debris in addition to a soluble CDase protein in the cytoplasm. Unlike the expression in Paenibacillus sp. A11, CDase was primarily observed in cytoplasm. However, by adding 0.5 M sorbitol as an osmolyte, the formation of insoluble CDase was prevented while a three-fold increase in cytoplasmic CDase activity was achieved after a 24 h-induction. The recombinant CDase protein was purified to approximately 14-fold with a 31% recovery to a specific activity of 141 units/mg protein by 40-60% ammonium sulfate precipitation, DEAE-Toyopearl 650 M, and Phenyl Sepharose CL-4B chromatography. It was homogeneous by non-denaturing and SDS-PAGE. The enzyme was a single polypeptide with a molecular weight of 80 kDa, as determined by gel filtration and SDS-PAGE. It showed the highest activity at pH 7.0 and $40^{\circ}C$. The catalytic efficiency ($k_{cat}/K_m$) values for $\alpha$-, $\beta$-, and $\gamma$-CD were $3.0{\times}10^5$, $8.8{\times}10^5$, and $5.5{\times}10^5\;M^{-1}\;min^{-1}$, respectively. The enzyme hydrolyzed CDs and linear maltooligosaccharides to yield maltose and glucose with less amounts of maltotriose and maltotetraose. The rates of hydrolysis for polysaccharides, soluble starch, and pullulan were very low. The cloned CDase was strongly inactivated by N-bromosuccinimide and diethylpyrocarbonate, but activated by dithiothreitol. A comparison of the biochemical properties of the CDases from Paenibacillus sp. A11 and E. coli transformant (pJK 555) indicates that they were almost identical.
We investigated the reduction of pollutants such as TOC (total organic carbon) and decolorization of Reactive Black 5 (RB5) by photocatalytic oxidation. The optimal values of major parameters for the reaction were obtained including the concentration of RB5, the amount of $TiO_2$ dosage and pH of solution. The values were 100 mg/L, 2 g/L and 4.9, respectively. As the concentration of oxygen increased, removal rate of pollutants increased. After $TiO_2$ was regenerated and used again by micro filtration (MF) ceramic membrane, the removal efficiency of color and removal rate of pollutants did not decrease significantly.
For advanced drinking water treatment of high turbidity water, we used the hybrid process that was composed of photocatalyst packing in space of between outside of multi-channel ceramic microfiltration membrane and membrane module inside. Photocatalyst was polypropylene (PP) beads coated $TiO_2$ powder by CVD (chemical vapor deposition) process. Instead of natural organic matters (NOM) and fine inorganic particles in natural water source, standard NOM solution was prepared with humic acid and kaolin. Water-back-flushing of 10 sec was performed per every period of 10 min to minimize membrane fouling. Resistance of membrane fouling ($R_f$) increased and J decreased as concentration of humic acid changed from 2 mg/L to 10 mg/L, and finally the highest total permeate volume ($V_T$) could be obtained at 2 mg/L. Then, treatment efficiency of turbidity and $UV_{254}$ absorbance were above 96.4% and 78.9%, respectively. As results of treatment portions by membrane filtration, photocatalyst adsorption, and photo-oxidation in (MF), (MF + $TiO_2$), (MF + $TiO_2$ + UV) processes, turbidity was treated little by photocatalyst adsorption, and photo-oxidation. However, treatment portions of $UV_{254}$ absorbance by adsorption (MF + $TiO_2$) and photo-oxidation (MF + $TiO_2$ + UV) at humic acid of 4 mg/L and 6 mg/L were above 9.0, 9.5 and 8.1, 10.9%, respectively.

An extracellular $\beta$-glucosidase produced by Monascus purpureus NRRL1992 in submerged cultivation was purified by acetone precipitation, gel filtration, and hydrophobic interaction chromatography, resulting in a purification factor of 92-fold. A $2^2$ central-composite design (CCD) was performed to find the best temperature and pH conditions for enzyme activity. Maximum activity was observed in a wide range of temperature and pH values, with optimal conditions set at $50^{\circ}C$ and pH 5.5. The $\beta$-glucosidase showed moderate thermostability, was inhibited by $HgCl_2$, $K_2Cr_O_4$, and $K_2Cr_2O_7$, whereas other reagents including $\beta$-mercaptoethanol, SDS, and EDTA showed no effect. Activity was slightly stimulated by low concentrations of ethanol and methanol. Hydrolysis of p-nitrophenyl-$\beta$-D-glucopyranoside (pNPG), cellobiose, salicin, n-octyl-$\beta$-D-glucopyranoside, and maltose indicates that the $\beta$-glucosidase has broad substrate specificity. Apparently, glucosyl residues were removed from the nonreducing end of p-nitrophenyl-$\beta$-D-cellobiose. $\beta$-Glucosidase affinity and hydrolytic efficiency were higher for pNPG, followed by maltose and cellobiose. Glucose and cellobiose competitively inhibited pNPG hydrolysis.
