  • The disjoining pressure is critical in modeling the transport phenomena in small scales. They are very useful in characterizing the non-continuum effects that are not negligible in heat and mass transports in the film of less than submicro-scales. We present he disjoining pressure of thin film absorbed on solid substrate using Molecular Dynamics Simulation (MD). The disjoining pressure with respect to the film thickness is accurately calculated in the resolution of a molecular scale. The characteristics of the pressure are discussed regarding the molecular nature of the fluid system like molecular diameter and intermolecular interaction. Also, the MD results are compared with those based on the macroscopic approximation of the slab-like density profile. Significant discrepancy is observed when the effective film thickness is less than several molecular diameter

  • This paper presents the contact pressure distribution of pin bushing bearings for various lubrication friction modes such as oil film and elastohydrodynamic lubrication contacts, a mixed lubrication contact, a boundary contact, and a dry contact. During a sliding contact of a plain bearing, the boundary and dry rubbing contacts are dominated between a piston pin and a pin bushing bearing. This may come from a micro-scale clearance, an explosive impact pressures from the piston head, and an oscillatory motion of a pin bearing. The computed results show that as the oil film parameter $h/{\sigma}$ is increased from the dry rubbing contact to the oil film lubrication friction, the maximum oil film pressure is radically increased due to an increased viscous friction with a thin oil film thickness and the maximum asperity contact pressure is reduced due to a decreased asperity contact of the rubbing surfaces.

  • NbTi thin films were prepared on Si wafer and Cu substrate by rf magnetron sputtering in the range of sputtering pressure $3{\times}10^{-2}$torr to $3{\times}10^{-4}$torr at room temperature. The influence of sputtering pressure and substrate type on crystallographic orientation and morphology of NbTi thin films was investigated by using X-ray diffraction(XRD) and scanning electron microscopy(SEM), respectively. And the effect of crystallographic orientation and morphology of NbTi film on electromagnetic behaviors was estimated by measuring critical current in various applied magnetic field. The film morphology changed from porous structure consisting of tapered crystallites to densely deposited film decreasing with sputtering pressure. The change of crystallographic orientation with the sputtering pressure and rf power was calculated from the texture coefficient of(002) plane based on XRD patterns. It was found that a change of texture coefficient of(002) plane increased with decreasing sputtering pressure. From observation of critical current in various applied magnetic field, we have identified that the change of critical current abruptly decrease applying with magnetic field and NbTi film produced at high sputtering pressure does not exhibit superconductivity but at low sputtering pressure shows superconductivity.

  • In this study, the pressure distributions on the oil film of piston pin bearings are found by two-dimensional lubrication analysis in order to help the optimum design of the bearings of piston pin. The lubrication analysis is carried out together with an equation related with the oil pressure-viscosity index. The oil film pressure distribution is used as an input data for pressure boundary conditions at the piston pin-boss surface. Finally, the piston pin-boss stress distribution coupled with the thermal stress is calculated, and then compared with the results of the stress analysis which is not counted with the oil film pressure boundary condition.

  • This paper describes on the fabrication and characteristics of micro ceramic thin-film type pressure sensors based on Ta-N strain-gauges for high-temperature applications. The Ta-N thin-film strain-gauges are deposited onto thermally oxidized Si diaphragms by RF sputtering in an argon-nitrogen atmosphere($N_2$ gas ratio: 8 %, annealing condition: $900^{\circ}C$, 1 hr.), Patterned on a wheatstone bridge configuration, and use as pressure sensing elements with a high stability and a high gauge factor. The sensitivity is $1.097{\sim}1.21mV/V.kgf/cm^2$ in the temperature range of $25{\sim}200^{\circ}C$ and the maximum non-linearity is 0.43 %FS. The fabricated pressure sensor presents a lower TCR, non-linearity than existing Si piezoresistive pressure sensors. The fabricated micro ceramic thin-film type pressure sensor is expected to be usefully applied as pressure and load sensors that is operable under high-temperature environments.

  • This paper describes the influence on engine main bearing behavior of the oil film when the fuel is diluted on a diesel engine equipped with DPF system. Oil film pressure and the thickness is calculated in accordance to the fuel dilution. The calculation is based on the numerical analysis of the engine main bearing. As a result, the engine oil viscosity decreased as the fuel dilution increased. This led the increment of the maximum oil thickness pressure. Verification of the minimum oil film thickness settlement by the engine gas pressure and the fuel dilution was confirmed. Destruction possibility of the engine main bearing was foreseen when the engine speed was 2000 rpm with the fuel dilution 15% and the 5W40 engine oil.

  • Amorphous In-Ga-Zn-O (a-IGZO) thin film transistors, because of their relatively low mobility, have limits in attempts to fulfill high-end specifications for display backplanes. In-Zn-O (IZO) is a promising semiconductor material for high mobility device applications with excellent transparency to visible light region and low temperature process capability. In this paper, the effects of working pressure on the physical and electrical properties of IZO films and thin film transistors are investigated. The working pressure is modulated from 2 mTorr to 5 mTorr, whereas the other process conditions are fixed. As the working pressure increases, the extracted optical band gap of IZO films gradually decreases. Absorption coefficient spectra indicate that subgap states increase at high working pressure. Furthermore, IZO film fabricated at low working pressure shows smoother surface morphology. As a result, IZO thin film transistors with optimum conditions exhibit excellent switching characteristics with high mobility (≥ 30㎠/Vs) and large on/off ratio.

  • The liquid film thickness inside a pressure-swirl nozzle was measured, and then the measured liquid film thickness was compared with the results from previous empirical equations. The liquid film inside the nozzle was visualized using extended transparent nozzles and a microscopic imaging system, and then the measurement error was evaluated using optical geometry analysis. The high injection pressures up to 7MPa were adopted to simulate the injection conditions of the direct-injection spark-ignition engines. The totally different two injectors with different fuels, nozzle lengths, nozzle diameters and swirlers were utilized to obtain the comprehensive equations. The results showed that the liquid film thickness very slightly decreased at high injection pressures and the empirical equations overestimated the effect of injection pressure. Most of empirical equations did not include the effect of nozzle length and swirler angle, although it caused significant change in liquid film thickness. A new empirical equation was suggested based on the experimental results with the effects of fuel properties, injection pressure, nozzle diameter, nozzle length and swirler angle.

  • Chromium oxide thin films have been deposited on silicon substrates using a tabletop 9kJ mathertyped plasma focus (PF) device. Before deposition, pinch behavior with gas pressure was observed. Strength of pinches was increased with increasing working pressure. Deposition was performed at room temperature as a function of working pressure between 50 and 1000 mTorr. Composition and surface morphology of the films were analyzed by Auger Electron Spectroscopy and Scanning Electron Microscope, respectively. Growth rates of the films were decreased with pressure. The oxide films were polycrystalline containing some impurities, Cu, Fe, C and revealed finer grain structure at lower pressure.

  • A finite element approach to analyzing the film pressure of engine bearings has been presented based on the viscosity-temperature equations. The calculated results from each viscosity model are compared with each other for various temperature models of the oil film. The FEM results show that the appropriate selection of the viscosity-temperature model is very important factor for analyzing the film pressure distribution of engine bearings.
