In this paper, we propose a file system for flash memory which remedies shortcomings of existing flash memory file systems. Besides supporting large block size, the proposed file system reduces time in initializing file system significantly by adopting logical address comprised of erase block number and bitmap for pages in the block to find a page. The file system is suitable for embedded systems with limited main memory since it has small in-memory data structures. It also provides efficient management of obsolete blocks and free blocks, which contribute to the reduction of file update time. Finally the proposed file system can easily configure the maximum file size and file system size limits, which results in portability to emerging larger flash memories. By conducting performance evaluation studies, we show that the proposed file system can contribute to the performance improvement of embedded systems.

This paper proposes a digital forensic method to a file creation transaction using a journal file($LogFile) on NTFS File System. The journal file contains lots of information which can help recovering the file system when system failure happens, so knowledge of the structure is very helpful for a forensic analysis. The structure of the journal file, however, is not officially opened. We find out the journal file structure with analyzing the structure of log records by using reverse engineering. We show the digital forensic procedure extracting information from the log records of a sample file created on a NTFS volume. The related log records are as follows: bitmap and segment allocation information of MFT entry, index entry allocation information, resident value update information($FILE_NAME, $STANDARD_INFORMATION, and INDEX_ALLOCATION attribute etc.).

There are many file systems in various operating systems. Those are usually designed for server environments, where the common cases are usually 'multiple active users', 'great many small files' And they assume a big main memory to be used as buffer cache. So the existing file systems are not suitable for resource hungry embedded systems that process multimedia data streams. In this study, we designed and implemented a new file system which efficiently stores and retrieves multimedia data steams. The proposed file system has a very simple disk layout, which guarantees a quick disk initialization and file system recovery. And we introduced a new indexing-scheme, called the time-based indexing scheme, with the file system. With the indexing scheme, the file system maintains the relation between time and the location for all the multimedia streams. The scheme is useful in searching and playing the compressed multimedia streams by locating exact frame position with given time, resulting in reduction of CPU processing and power consumption. The proposed file system and its APIs utilizing the time-based indexing schemes were implemented firstly on a Linux environment, though it is operating system independent. In the performance evaluation on a real DVR system, which measured the execution time of multi-threaded reading and writing, we found the proposed file system is maximum 38.7% faster than EXT2 file system.

Journaling file systems are widely used to keep file systems in a consistent state against crash situations. As traditional journaling file systems are designed for block I/O devices like hard disks, they are not efficient for emerging byte-addressable NVM (non-volatile memory) media. In this article, we present a new in-memory journaling file system for NVM that is different from traditional journaling file systems in two respects. First, our file system journals only modified portions of metadata instead of whole blocks based on the byte-addressable I/O feature of NVM. Second, our file system bypasses the heavy software I/O stack while journaling by making use of an in-memory file system interface. Measurement studies using the IOzone benchmark show that the proposed file system performs 64.7% better than Ext4 on average.

With the growing demand for MAC-based system, the need for digital forensic techniques of these system has been increasing. In the digital forensic analysis process, sometimes analysts have recovered the deleted files when they prove the allegations if system user try to remove the evidence deliberately. Research and analysis that recover the deleted files from a file system constantly been made and HFS+ that is a file system of MAC-based system also has been researched. Carving techniques primarily has been used to recover the deleted file from HFS+ a file system because metadata of folder or file overwrite metadata of a deleted file when file is deleted from a file system on HFS+ characteristic. But if the file content is saved by separated state in a file system, Carving techniques also can't recover the whole or a part of the deleted file. In this paper we describe technique the deleted file recovery technique using HFS+ file system a journal. This technique that is suggested by existing research and analysis result is the technique that recover the deleted file by metadata that is maintained in a journal on HFS+ file system. but this technique excludes specific files and this problem needs to be reformed. In this paper we suggest algorithm that analysis a journal of HFS+ file system in detail. And we demonstrate that the deleted file cat be recovered from the extracted metadata by this algorithm without the excluded file.
Conventional file systems for harddisk drive cannot be applied to NAND flash memory, because the physical characteristics of NAND flash memory differs from those of harddisk drive. To address this problem, various file systems with better reliability and efficiency have also been developed recently. However, those file systems have inherent overheads for updating the file's metadata pages, because those file systems save file's meta-data and data separately. Furthermore, those file systems have a critical reliability problem: file systems fail when either a page in meta-data of a file system or a file itself fails. In this paper, we propose a self-description page technique and In Memory Core File System technique to address these efficiency and reliability problems, and develop SDFS(Self-Description File System) newly. SDFS can be safely recovered, although some pages fail, and improves write and read performance by 36% and 15%, respectively, and reduces mounting time by 1/20 compared with YAFFS2.
I design an Embedded File System in Linux Operating System by applying modified LZSS compressed algorithm. This suggested Compressed File System which is modified file system of the Linux O.S saves the storage space. The compressed file system supports efficient use of storage space. The suggesting file system solves the small space of embedded system. The suggesting file system of this paper gives effect of the large storage space without extending the storage space.

The embedded systems on linux environment, commonly equip a file system as mini hard disk or flash memory to keep data. The types of the file system of the system are various according to it's operating system. Anyway, the more embedded system depends on the file system, the selection of the type of the file system effects more on the performance of the system. This thesis performs the performance benchmark of a FAT and Ext file systems. As the result, it is discussed that what file system is better at which case. These results are helpful at the selection of flash file system of the embedded systems on linux environment.

Many researches have been conducted to achieve improvement in distributed system that connects multiple computer systems via communication lines. Among others, the load balancing and file migration are considered to have significant impact on the performance of distributed system. The dynamic file migration algorithm common in distributed processing system involved complex calculations of decision function necessary for file migration and required migration of control messages for the performance of decision function. However, the performance of this decision function puts significant computational strain on computer. As one single network is shared by all computers, more computers connected to network means migration of more control messages from file migration, causing the network to trigger bottleneck in distributed processing system. Therefore, it has become imperative to carry out the research that aims to reduce the number of control messages that will be migrated. In this study, the learning automata was used for file migration which would requires only the file reference-related information to determine whether file migration has been made or determine the time and site of file migration, depending on the file conditions, thus reflecting the status of current system well and eliminating the message transfer and additional calculation overhead for file migration. Moreover, mathematical model for file migration was described in order to verify the proposed model. The results from mathematical model and simulation model suggest that the proposed model is well-suited to the distributed system.
