  • Hollow filament yarns provide better warmth to the touch, lighter in weight, increased opacity, and subtle luster compared to the regular synthetic filament yarns. However, luster properties of textile fibers or fabrics are often difficult to characterize, partly due to the fineness of the surface texture, the anisotropic nature of the weave structure, the complexity of the fiber array comprising a yarn, and the fiber structure itself. In this study, the fabric surface luster image was analyzed using image analysis methods after image acquisition. The hollow filament fiber was modeled using a three-dimensional modeling software. It was then ray-traced for comparing the virtual luster images of the hollow fiber and the regular fiber models based on shading models including photon mapping. The luster object size of the actual hollow filament fabric was smaller than that of the regular filament fabric. The shape of the luster object of the hollow filament fabric was dual peak type while that of the regular filament was single.

  • The filament winding method is widely used to manufacture products of fiber reinforced plastics (FRP), such as high pressure vessels, launch tubes and pipes. For reducing winding time, the method of winding by filament band which consists of several filament fibers is used. NC winding machine is used for precise winding and NC path is needed. Before filament winding, users should verify that winding path which presented by a line is appropriate by filament winding simulation. Also, the used length of each filament is different. So, if the peak filament exhausted, it causes to stop manufacturing. In this research, we developed software which visualizes 3D graphic of filament band winding path and simulates winding process on real time. And we proposed algorithm about calculation of each filament usage. We use geodesic equation for generating filament band surface and calculating the usage length of each filament.

  • A meso-scale model is proposed to study filament-wound composites with fiber undulations and crossovers. First, the crossover and undulation region is classified as the circumferential undulation and the helical undulation. Next, the two undulations are separately regarded as a series of sub-models to describe the meso-structure of undulations by using meso-parameters such as fiber orientation, fiber inclination angle, resin rich area, fiber volume fraction and bundle cross section. With the meso-structure model and the classic laminate theory, a method for calculating the stiffness of filament wound composites is eventually established. The effects of the fiber inclination angle, the fiber and resin volume fraction and the resin rich area on the stiffness are studied. The numerical results show that the elastic moduli for the circumferential undulation region decrease to a great extent as compared with that of the helical undulation region. Moreover, significant decrease in the elastic and shear moduli and increase in the Poisson's ratio are also found for the resin rich area. In addition, thickness and bundle section have evident effect on the equivalent stiffness of the fiber crossover and the undulation region.

  • In-situ structural health monitoring of filament wound pressure tanks were conducted during water-pressurizing test using embedded fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors. We need to monitor inner strains during working in order to verify the health condition of pressure tanks more accurately because finite element analyses on filament wound pressure tanks usually show large differences between inner and outer strains. Fiber optic sensors, especially FBG sensors can be easily embedded into the composite structures contrary to conventional electric strain gages (ESGs). In addition, many FBG sensors can be multiplexed in single optical fiber using wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) techniques. We fabricated a standard testing and evaluation bottle (STEB) with embedded FBG sensors and performed a water-pressurizing test. In order to increase the survivability of embedded FBG sensors, we suggested a revised fabrication process for embedding FBG sensors into a filament wound pressure tank, which includes a new protecting technique of sensor heads, the grating parts. From the experimental results, it was demonstrated that FBG sensors can be successfully adapted to filament wound pressure tanks for their structural health monitoring by embedding.

  • Among many fabrication methods of composite materials, filament winding is the most effective method for fabricating axis-symmetric structures such as pressure tanks and pipes. Filament wound pressure tanks are under high internal pressure during the operation and it has the complexity in damage mechanisms and failure modes. Fiber optic sensors, especially FBG sensors can be easily embedded into the composite structures contrary to conventional electric strain gages (ESGs). In addition, many FBG sensors can be multiplexed in single optical fiber using wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) techniques. In this paper, we fabricated several filament wound pressure tanks with embedded FBG sensors and conducted some kinds of experiments such as an impact test, a bending test, and a thermal cycling test. From the experimental results, it was successfully demonstrated that FBG sensors are very appropriate to composite structures fabricated by filament winding process even though they are embedded into composites by multiplexing.

• Filament wound pressure vessels have been studied for the efficient design tool to consider the variation of fiber angles through-the thickness direction. Filament winding patterns were simulated from semi-geodesic fiber path equation to calculate fiber path on arbitrary surface. Finite element analyses were performed considering fiber angle variation in longitudinal and thickness directions by ABAQUS. For the finite element modeling of the pressure tank, the 3-dimensional layered solid element was utilized. From the stress results of pressure tanks, maximum stress criterion in transverse direction was applied to modify material properties for failed region. In the end of each load increment, resultant layer stresses were compared with a failure criterion and properties were reduced to 1/10 for a failed layer. Results of progressive failure analysis were compared with two experimental data.

  • Double boss type composite pressure bottles have been developed widely but single boss type had not because there are some difficulty in technical point. In this paper a research was performed to develop composite pressure vessel in conjunction with design, fabrication, and test. Fiber pattern and angles were decided by CADFIL software and they are [liner/$15^{\circ}$/$15^{\circ}$/$90^{\circ}$/$18^{\circ}$/$90^{\circ}$/$21^{\circ}$/$21^{\circ}$/$90^{\circ}$]. Fabrication of bottles was done by AEA's 5-axis filament winding machine. During fabrication fiber optic sensor were embedded to measure were behavior of structure at the applied internal pressure. Even though satisfied test results were not obtained, the experimental set-up of fiber optics showed the possibility for the application of filament wound vessels. However, the conventional strain and fabrication of single boss composite bottles.

  • The effect of cultivation season on the cocoon filament quality of authorized silkworm variety, GoldenSilk was examined with cocoon filament character, reeling character, and fiber character during 3 years. In cocoon filament character, filament length of spring and autumn cocoon was 979 and 879 m, respectively. Cocoon filament weight of spring and autumn cocoon was 33.1 and 26.5 cg, which is lower than that of general bivoltine strain, BaeGokJam. Raw silk percentage of spring and autumn cocoon was 15.65 and 13.77%, respectively. In reeling character, reelability showed similar trend regardless of cultivation season and strain. However, the length and weight of non-broken filament of spring season were slightly higher than those of autumn cocoon. Cultivation season did not affect on the fiber characteristics such as clearness and neatness, lousiness, and degumming loss. In cocoon character, filament length, size, and weight, spring cocoon filament showed higher value than autumn cocoon, but lower than authorized general silkworm varieties. In reeling characteristics, non-broken length and weight showed the similar trends with the cocoon filament character. However, the reelability of GoldenSilk cocoon was not affected by cultivation season. The reelability of GoldenSilk cocoon was also similar with that of authorized general one. Fiber character including clearness and neatness, lousiness, and degumming loss was also similar regardless of the rearing season and different strain.
