  • The engineering design is very important to make the building of engineering mind in many industry companies because most of companies require commonly the talents for engineering design in order to have originality, reliability and responsibility for university students. But, it can be thought that most of students studying engineering fields in Korea can not have their talents for engineering design in major fields of university sufficiently due to traditional engineering education method. In this paper, a case study of the teaching method for the 'esearch problem' that means capstone design in engineering education is suggested to improve the teaching skills for various engineering based fields. In this paper, a case study of teaching method in research problem for engineering design is shown in order to improve the teaching method for the design in engineering fields.

  • The B-fields in Star-forming Region Observations (BISTRO) is a large program of the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT) to study the roles of magnetic fields in molecular clouds on intermediate scales (a few thousands au or larger scales), in which a large number of researchers over the world are involved. This project was initiated in 2016 with polarimetric observations of nearby star-forming regions and has been extended toward massive and farther regions (BISTRO-2) and various evolutionary stages and environmental conditions (BISTRO-3). The current status of the BISTRO projects is reported. In addition, we discuss magnetic fields in the Serpens Main molecular cloud, which is one of the BISTRO star-forming regions. Utilizing the Histogram of Relative Orientations method, which compares polarization directions with density gradients, we show that magnetic fields are parallel to filaments in less dense filamentary structures but perpendicular to dense ones. Furthermore, the magnetic field directions with respect to density gradients vary again with density in denser core regions, which is understood by core formation and pinched fields. Note: (PI) D. • The B-fields In STar-forming Region Observations (BISTRO 1 and 2) is a large program of the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT) using SCUBA-2 and POL-2, starting in 2016. We aim to study the roles of magnetic fields in star formation by observing 32 fields of nearby low-mass and high-mass star forming regions. The angular resolution and the wavelength provided by JCMT (14 arcsecond at 850 micrometer) are ideal to investigate the intermediate scales of magnetic fields (1000-20000 au) associated in cold dense cores and filaments. We report the current status of this project and discuss the magnetic fields of the Serpens Main molecular cloud in which several filaments with various physical properties have been identified.

  • We present the study of association between sub-photospheric flow and photospheric magnetic fields of active regions respectively derived from the local helioseismology and observed magnetic fields. It is believed that the energetic transients, e.g., flares and CMES, are caused by changes in magnetic and velocity field topologies in solar atmosphere. These changes are essentially brought about by the magnetic fields that are rooted beneath the photosphere where they interact and get affected by sub-photospheric flows. Therefore, we expect the topology of sub-surface flows to be correlated with the observable topology of magnetic fields at the photosphere and higher layers. In order to examine the correlation, if any, we computed the near photospheric flows and photospheric magnetic fields using the Doppler velocity and magnetic fields observations, respectively, provided by the SDO/HMI. The high resolution Doppler observations from the HMI enabled us to compute the very high p-modes parameters which sample the sub-photosphere shallow near the photosphere. Furthermore, we compute the sub-photospheric flow topology parameters, e.g., vorticity, kinetic helicity, and photospheric magnetic field topology parameters, e.g., magnetic helicity, from the magnetic fields observations to compare their associations. We present the result of the analysis in the paper.

  • The cultivation of biomass crops is now global demand for decreasing emissions of carbon dioxide ($CO_2$) from fossil fuel. Miscanthus species have been studied as a suitable crop for biomass production, due to its characteristics of fast growth and high biomass. In Korea, Miscanthus species have gained wide attention as an option for biomass production alternative to fossil fuels, recently. New strain of giant Miscanthus has been developed and two large trial sites for the giant Miscanthus production were built in the lower reaches of the Geum River. To evaluate the ecological influence of the giant Miscanthus as an bioenergy crop for the future, we investigated the impact of the construction of the giant Miscanthus production fields on the biota and also compared it with biota in paddy fields near the study sites. The biota including plants, amphibians, reptiles, mammals, avifauna, insects, and bugs was investigated. The plant diversity of the giant Miscanthus production fields was poorer than the paddy fields because the high height of the giant Miscanthus might hinder the growth of other plants. However, the giant Miscanthus production fields serves habitat to animals, leading to rich diversity of animals including avifauna, insects, and bugs. The rich diversity of the animals in the giant Miscanthus production fields coincides with the fact that the giant Miscanthus was grown without any pesticide, herbicide, and fertilizer. This study showed that the giant Miscanthus can influence on biota and further long term study is needed to elucidate the interaction between the diversity of biota and the giant Miscanthus.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the cause of leaf discoloration occurring frequently in paddy cultivation. Chemical property of soil and inorganic nutrient component of leaf were analyzed on abnormal fields of 7 regions where leaf discoloration occurred severely and normal fields of 7 regions among ginseng garden. The pH of abnormal fields was strong acidic condition (pH 5.51) compare to normal fields of slightly acid condition (pH 6.42). Calcium and magnesium content in abnormal fields were lower distinctly than that of normal fields, while EC, organic matter, phosphate, and potassium content showed not distinct difference between abnormal and normal fields. Whereas calcium and magnesium content were distinctly high in normal fields, both of potassium and iron content of ginseng leaf were distinctly high in abnormal fields. In particular, iron content of abnormal fields was more 1.94 times in soil, and 3.03 times in leaf than that of normal fields. In soil chemical property, there were significant negative correlation between leaf discoloration ratio and soil pH, and there were also significant positive correlation between leaf discoloration ratio and iron content. In ginseng leaf, there were highly significant negative correlation between leaf discoloration ratio and calcium content, and there were also highly significant positive correlation between leaf discoloration ratio and iron content.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the location characteristics of the rice paddy fields and to predict shrinking areas of them. The study area is in South Korea nationwide, and a 300×300m raster level is adopted as a spatial analysis unit. The binary logit model and spatial simulation model are employed for the analyses. As a result, population, industry, climate and nature, and accessibility play a significant role in determining rice paddy fields' locations. It is predicted that the shrinking rate will be high in Gangwon-do, Gyeongsangbuk-do, and Gyeongsangnam-do until 2027. The hot spots are intensively shaped in the inland of Gangwon-do, eastern parts of Gyeonggi-do, and the borders of Gyeongsangnam-do and Jeollabuk-do between Charyeong and Sobaek mountain ranges. Using Gimcheon-si as an example, the study suggests fundamental policy implications for taking advantage of the simulation results from the lens of local agriculture. Several policy measures are proposed for improving management strategies for the rice paddy fields in the long run.

  • This study focuses on investigating and analyzing overall information use behavior of the health fields researchers. Questionaries were 116 researchers in there nursing university or college and EMT college. Four areas were tested on the basis of the purpose that there would exist unique characteristics in the information seeking behavior of health fields researchers. The findings of the study shows that health fields researchers prefer monographs and journals; they tend to use current materials; the first information source for their research activities is the cited references in the book or journal article; they are likely to delegate literature searching to the librarian, but they tend to conduct direct searching in online setting; in general, they react positively for the rapid change in information environment caused by recent development of information technology. It is emphasized that to design an efficient information system and provide an effective information service in the health science related library or information center, it is essential to consider the major characteristics and attributes of health fields researchers in terms of their information use behavior.
