  • This paper presents a procedure for field measurements which provides a generalized Narrowband Power Line Communications (NB-PLC) channel model for low voltage (LV) access network in order to deploy advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) within Lahore, Pakistan. The measurements of allocated sites were performed in the residential (urban and rural), industrial and commercial electricity consumers for the NB-PLC channel modeling of overhead transmission lines (TLs). On the basis of extensive field measurement results, the average attenuation profile and transfer functions are presented. The results obtained from field measurements are validated by comparing them with a proposed Simulink model. A close agreement in the measured and simulated transfer function (TF) results is observed. The proposed Simulink model is an effort to model the NB-PLC channels in an effective way, especially in South Asian countries.

  • In this study, applicability of software used to analyze the lateral deformations and its shape of braced cuts, executed to excavate the ground for constructing the underground structures, was assessed by performing field measurements and numerical analyses and their behaviors were also compared with results of previous studies. Three typical sections, located at the construction site where the subway was on the process of construction at Suwon city in Gyeonggido, were chosen and the data of field measurement at those sections were collected. Numerical analyses with FEM technique of using the software PLAXIS and elasto-plastic approach of using the software MIDAS were performed. In general, the deformed shapes of braced cut, obtained from numerical approaches, were in relatively good agreements with results from field measurements. For sections of A-A and B-B, measured values were greater than analyzed ones whereas they were in relatively good agreements in the section C-C. As results of comparing the values from the measurements and the estimations, they were found to be close to each other so that numerical approaches were assessed to be appropriate to estimate the lateral deformation. The numerical technique with FEM was preferred to use because it estimated closer to the measurements than the elasto-plastic approach.

  • Earth's gravity field recovery was improved after the pre-processing upgrade of the Gravity Recovery And Climate Experiments (GRACE) satellite's star trackers. The star tracker measurements were filtered with a tighter low-pass filtering of 0.025Hz cutoff frequency, instead of a nominal filtering of 0.1Hz cutoff frequency. In addition, a jump removal algorithm was applied to remove discontinuities, due to direct Sun and/or Moon interventions, in the star tracker measurements. During the K-Band Ranging (KBR) calibration maneuvers, large attitude variations could be detected concurrently by both of the star trackers and the accelerometer. The misalignment angles of star trackers between the true frame and the normal frame could be determined by comparing measurements from these sensors. In this paper, new Earth' gravity field maps were obtained using above improvement. Based on comparisons to nominal Earth's gravity field maps, the new Earth's gravity field maps were found better than the nominal ones. Among the applied methods, the misalignment calibration of the star trackers had a major impact on the improvement of the new Earth's gravity field maps.

  • The emergence of a growing number of tall buildings, often with unusual shapes and innovative structural systems, has led to the realization of the need for and the importance of field measurements. The new China Central Television (CCTV) Tower in Beijing is one of tall buildings with a highly unusual shape and a complex structural system, requiring field measurements to identify its dynamic characteristics for the subsequent dynamic analysis of the tower under wind excitation, seismic-induced ground motion and traffic-induced ground motion. The structural system and the finite element model of the CCTV Tower are first introduced in this paper. The computed natural frequencies and mode shapes are then presented as a reference for the field measurement. After introducing the arrangement of the ambient vibration measurement, the field measured natural frequencies and damping ratios of the CCTV Tower are presented and the measured natural frequencies are finally compared with the computed ones. It was found that the structural damping ratios of the CCTV Tower are small and the computed natural frequencies are smaller than the measured ones by about 12~17%.

  • In the present work exchange coupling between ultrathin Fe ($8{\AA}$) and Tb ($12{\AA}$) layers separated by Au spacer of varied thickness ($3-20{\AA}$) was studied. Anomalous Hall effect measurements showed weakly damped oscillating dependence of the Hall conductivity as a function of Au spacer thickness. Disagreement of the observed damping with the RKKY model of interlayer exchange coupling was explained by the influence of external magnetic field on the behaviour of exchange coupling oscillations. It was confirmed by Hall-like effect measurements at zero applied magnetic field and also illustrated by corresponding estimations.

  • Purpose: The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of varying resolutions of cone-beam computed tomography images on the accuracy of linear measurements of edentulous areas in human cadaver heads. Intact cadaver heads were used to simulate a clinical situation. Materials and Methods: Fiduciary markers were placed in the edentulous areas of 4 intact embalmed cadaver heads. The heads were scanned with two different CBCT units using a large field of view ($13cm{\times}16cm$) and small field of view ($5cm{\times}8cm$) at varying voxel sizes (0.3 mm, 0.2 mm, and 0.16 mm). The ground truth was established with digital caliper measurements. The imaging measurements were then compared with caliper measurements to determine accuracy. Results: The Wilcoxon signed rank test revealed no statistically significant difference between the medians of the physical measurements obtained with calipers and the medians of the CBCT measurements. A comparison of accuracy among the different imaging protocols revealed no significant differences as determined by the Friedman test. The intraclass correlation coefficient was 0.961, indicating excellent reproducibility. Inter-observer variability was determined graphically with a Bland-Altman plot and by calculating the intraclass correlation coefficient. The Bland-Altman plot indicated very good reproducibility for smaller measurements but larger discrepancies with larger measurements. Conclusion: The CBCT-based linear measurements in the edentulous sites using different voxel sizes and FOVs are accurate compared with the direct caliper measurements of these sites. Higher resolution CBCT images with smaller voxel size did not result in greater accuracy of the linear measurements.

  • In summer 2010, field measurements of local ice loads were carried out in the Arctic Ocean using the Korean first icebreaking research vessel, ARAON. In some previous studies by the authors, several investigations for the data measured at 2010 including the relationship between the measuring points and ice loads, the possibility for observation of higher ice load and the relationship between the ship speed and ice loads were reported. During 10 days in August 2013, new field measurements were performed in similar waters of the Arctic Ocean using the same vessel, ARAON. The aim of this study is to investigate the statistical properties of 2013 measurements and compare results by two periods.

  • The purposes of this research are to analyze the internal settlement behavior of Concrete Faced Rockfill Dam (CFRD) typed 'D dam' and to evaluate the stability of the 'D dam' during dam construction using internal settlement measurements and results of numerical analysis. The field measurements were obtained during dam construction period. The numerical analysis was also carried out for the same construction period. The numerical analysis focused mainly on prediction of stress and displacement behavior of 'D dam' during dam construction stage using input parameters obtained from laboratory tests, i.e. large triaxial tests. The behavior of 'D dam' was evaluated to be stable from comparing the results of field measurements and numerical analysis. A simple empirical equation is also presented to predict final settlement at the completion of dam construction, using settlement measurement monitored during dam embankment.

  • Alternating current (AC) losses of two Bi-2223 ([Bi, Pb]: Sr: Ca: Cu: O = 2:2:2:3) tapes [(Tape I, un-twist-pitch) and the other with a twist-pitch of 10 mm (Tape II)] were measured and compared. These samples, produced by the powder-in-(Ag) tube (PIT) method, are multi-filamentary. Also, it's produced by non-twist and different twist pitch (8, 10, 13, 30, 50 and 70 mm). The critical current measurement was carried out under the environment in liquid Nitrogen and in zero-field by 4-probe method. Susceptibility measurements were conducted while cooling in a magnetic field. Flux loss measurements were conducted as a function of ramping rate, frequency and field direction. The AC flux loss increases as the twist-pitch of the tapes decreased, in agreement with the Norris Equation. Neutron-diffraction measurements have been carried out investigate the crystal structure, magnetic structures, and magnetic phase transitions in Bi-2223([Bi, Pb]:Sr:Ca:Cu:O)
