Application of Carbon Nanotubes in Displays

  • Since the discovery over a decade ago, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have been attracting considerable attentions both from scientists and engineers. Because of the excellent field emission properties, such as high aspect ratio, extremely small diameter, and high emission current, CNTs become a potential candidate as field emitter for field emission display (FED) and lighting (FEL) as backlight for LCD. Due to the exceptional physical properties, such as superior thermal and electrical conductivities, as well as high stiffness and strength, the CNT-based composites can be as light-weight heat-sink or thermal spreader materials used for power electronic devices, such as power LED for general illumination. The CNTs for above applications will be reviewed, and related materials and devices will be demonstrated in this paper.

Characterization of the 2 inch CNT-FED Fabricated by using a Vacuum In-Line Sealing Technology

  • We have fabricated a carbon nanotube field emission display(CNT FED) panel with a 2 inch diagonal size by using screen printing method and vacuum in-line sealing technology. The sealing temperature of the panel was around 390 $^{\circ}C$ and the leak test was carried out for 72 hrs after sealing process. When field emission properties of fabricated and sealed CNT FED panel were characterized and compared with those of unsealed panel which was located in vacuum chamber of vacuum level similar with the sealed panel, the sealed panel showed more improved field emission properties.

  • 탄소나노튜브는 우수한 전기적 특성과 전계를 집중시킬 수 있는 높은 종횡비 그리고 뛰어난 열적 안정성 때문에, 높은 전류밀도와 낮은 구동전압 그리고 긴 수명시간과 같은 우수한 전계 방출 특성을 구현할 수 있는 재료이다. 탄소나노튜브를 이용하여 전계방출원을 제작하기 위해서는 금속전극에 탄소나노튜브를 고정시켜야 한다. 이때 금속과 탄소나노튜브 사이의 접촉문제가 필수적인데, 본 실험에서는 그래핀을 계면으로 사용함으로써 본 문제를 해결하였다. 이러한 시도는 금속과 탄소나노튜브 사이에 우수한 전기적 열적 계면을 형성함으로써 기존 전계방출원보다 뛰어난 전계방출 성능을 얻을 수 있게 하였다. 본 연구를 통해 탄소나노튜브 전계방출원을 전자 추진원으로의 응용이 기대된다.

Synthesis of well-aligned thin multiwalled carbon nanotubes on the silicon substrate and their field emission properties

  • Well-aligned multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were successfully synthesized by catalytic chemical vapor deposition using a hydrogen sulfide ($H_2S$) additive onto Al/Fe thin film deposited on Si wafers. Transmission electron microscopy images indicated that the as-grown carbon products were thin MWCNTs with small outer diameters of less than 10 nm. $H_2S$ plays a key role in synthesizing thin MWCNTs with a large inside hollow core. The well-aligned thin MWCNTs showed a low turn-on voltage of about 1.1 V/${\mu}m$ at a current density of 0.1 ${\mu}A/cm^2$ and a high emission current of about 1.0 mA/$cm^2$ at a bias field of 2.3 V/${\mu}m$. We suggest a possible growth mechanism for the well-aligned thin MWCNTs with a large inside hollow core.

  • The field degradation of carbon nanotube field emitters in diode emission at constant current was demonstrated to be highly dependent upon the presence of residual gases at partial pressures. Upon exposure to a higher pressure of oxygen containing gases, for example, $O_2$ and CO increased the voltage. Those gases give rise to chemical etching to CNTs emitters. On the contrary, $CH_4$ affected the emission properties in the opposite direction as decreasing the voltage which was probably attributed to the introduction of adsorbate tunneling states. The mixed gas may cause a combined effect of both adsorbate tunneling states and CNT etching.

유리기판 위에 성장된 탄소나노튜브를 이용한 평판 램프의 전계방출 특성 (Field Emission Properties of Flat Lamp using Carbon Nanotubes Grownon Glass Substrate)

  • We fabricated the 1-inch diode type flat lamp using CNTs, which were grown directly on soda-lime glass substrate at 600 ∼ 650 $^{\circ}C$ by thermal chemical vapor deposition(CVD) of acetylene gas. Turn- on field was about 2.8 V/${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. We observed that uniform and high brightness had been obtained. The brightness of CNT flat lamp was measured up to about 14 kcd/$m^2$ at 2000V in spacing of 500 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. The results showed that the CNTs were very good emission source and suitable for application in the lamp.

국내 디젤철도차량의 온실가스 배출계수 개발방향 연구 (A Basic Study on the Development of GHG Emission Factor from Diesel-Powered Railcars in Korea)

  • Since national mid-term target for GHG reduction was determined in 2009, various efforts in transportations have been prepared. Generally, the GHG emission of transportation is calculated using the emission factor published from IPCC guideline(2006). However, it is necessary to develop new emission factors considering the properties of transportation as well as fuel. In Korean railroad, main emission sources are the consumption of diesel and electricity from railcar operation. The GHG emission of electric-powered railcars can be estimated using national electric emission factor, but diesel-powered railcars show different trends. The purpose of this study was to establish the development plans of emission factors for diesel-powered railcars. As a result, the emission factors of diesel-powered railcars were classified into railcar type, engine type and life cycle, notch, load, and traffic volume. In future, several emission factors with this category will be presented quantitatively through field tests with the order of priority.
