  • Several crucial issues are discussed in the design of cryogenic cooling system for high field magnets. This study is mainly motivated by our ongoing program to develop a 21 T Fourier Transform Ion Cyclotron Resonance Mass Spectrometer (FT-ICR MS). The magnets of this system will be built horizontally to accomplish the requirement of user friendliness and reliability, and the replenishment of cryogen will not be necessary by a closed-loop cooling concept. The initial cool-down and safety are basically considered in this paper. The effects of the helium II volume and the gap distance of the weight load relief valve (or safety valve) on the cool-down time and temperature rising during an off-normal state are discussed. The total amount of cryogenic cooling loads and the required helium flow rate during cool-down are also estimated by a relevant heat transfer analysis. The temperatures of cryogen-free radiation shield are finally determined from the refrigeration power of a cryocooler and the total cryogenic loads.

  • This study has been carried out to investigate the cooling ability improvement of diecasting mold by decompression cooling system. The decompression cooling system was applied to the new/used oil pump cover molds. The temperature of the surface mold applied the decompression cooling system fell to 15 degrees, especially in case of the used mold. The defect ratio of the oil pump cover manufactured by decompression cooling system has decreased from 2.8 percent to 0.2 percent. According to the results of the cooling ability improvement of diecasting mold by decompression cooling system, the decompression degree and supply pressure were set up the control item to apply the decompression cooling system to the diecasting mold in the industry field.

  • All modem, aerospace gas turbines must operate with hot stage gas temperature several hundreds of degrees hotter than the melting temperatures of the materials used in their construction. Complicated cooling schemes need to be employed in the combustor walls and In the high pressure turbine stages. Internal passages are cast or machined into the hot sections of aero-gas turbine engines and air from the compressor is used for cooling. In many cases, the cooling system is engineered to utilize jets of high velocity air, which impinge on the internal surfaces of the components. They are divided by Impinging cooling method and Vortex cooling method. Specially, Research of new cooling system(Vortex cooling method) that overcome inefficiency of film cooling and limitation of space. The focus of new cooling system that improve greatly cooling efficiency using quantity's cooling air which is less is set in surface heat transfer elevation. Therefore, In this study, the numerical analysis have been performed for characteristic of flow and thermal in the swirl chamber and compared with the flow field measurement by LDV. especially, for understanding of high heat transfer efficiency in vicinity of wall. we considered flow structure and mechanism of vortex and heat transfer characteristic in variation of Reynolds number.

  • This paper aims to design of a double stator axial field 12/10 SRM. Conventional and single stator axial field SRMs were reviewed to apply for automotive cooling fan. The axial field SRM has the advantage of shorter flux path, higher torque per volume and lower iron loss. However, there is axial eccentricity in single stator axial field SRM due to one side excitation. Therefore, a double stator type is designed in this paper to reduce the axial eccentricity. And the trapezoidal pole shape of the stator increases the flow of magnetic flux from stator to rotor and the torque region. The torque and efficiency are compared and tested with experiments.

  • The engine cooling system is a device that maintains the temperature in the engine room at an appropriate level by driving a cooling fan when the temperature in the engine room generated during the vehicle operation occurs over a certain temperature. In recent years, the vehicle cooling system has changed to an electronic system. Therefore, in this paper, we design and develop a hall sensor based electronic engine cooling system. In this paper, a hall sensor module and an actuator module for engine cooling control system are designed. In order to verify the performance of the designed module, the magnetic field control was verified through the simulation of the diameter and the head of the coil.

  • The continuous casting is primarily a heat-extraction process in which the heat transfer at various cooling zones profoundly influences quality of products. So development of numerical model is necessarily needed for more specific and clear investigations upon heat transfer mechanism at mold and secondary cooling zones. In this study, heat transfer coefficients which shows the characteristic of heat transfer mechanism in mold are calculated for more exact analysis with temperatures measured in bloom mold using optimal algorithm, and finally the validity of cooling conditions at secondary cooling zone which is actually used at field for 30 Ton bloom type continuous casting of 0.187%C is investigated. From the results of solidification analysis, the characteristic of bloom mold shows good agreements with that of previously studies by other authors and optimized cooling conditions for 0.187%C are presented.

  • Dispersion of coolant jets in a film cooling flow field is the result of a highly complex interaction between the film cooling jets and the mainstream. In order to investigate the effect of blowing ratios on the film cooling of turbine blade, cylindrical body model was used. Mainstream Reynolds number based on the cylinder diameter was $7.1{\times}10^4$. The effect of coolant flow rates was studied for blowing ratios of 0.7, 0.9, 1.2 and 1.5, respectively. The temperature distribution of the cylindrical model surface is visualized by infrared thermography (IRT). Results show that the film-cooling performance could be significantly improved by the shaped injection holes. For higher blowing ratio, the spanwise-diffused injection holes are better due to the lower momentum flux away from the wall plane at the hole exit.

  • This paper presents demonstration study results derived through field testing of a solar assisted cooling and heating system for the library of a cultural center building located in Gwangju, Korea. The area of demanded cooling and heating for building was about 350m2. Solar hot water was delivered by means of a 200m2 array of evacuated tubular solar collector (ETSC) to drive a single-effect (LiBr/H2O) absorption chiller of 10RT nominal cooling capacity. From March in 2008 to February in 2009, demonstration test were performed for solar cooling and heating system. After experiments and analysis, this study found that solar thermal system was 84% for the solar hot water supply and 12% for space heating and 4% for space cooling.

  • This study strives to develop an effective strategy to inhibit cavitation inception on hydrofoils by using local cooling technique. By setting up a temperature boundary condition and cooling a small area on the upper surface of a hydrofoil, the fluid temperature around the cooling surface will be decreased and thereby the corresponding liquid saturation pressure will drop below the lowest absolute pressure within the flow field. Hence, cavitation can never occur. In this paper, a NACA0015 hydrofoil at $4^{\circ}$ angle of attack was numerically investigated to verify the effectiveness of the proposed technique. The CFD results indicate that the cooling temperature and the cooling surface roughness are the critical factors affecting the success of such technique used for cavitation suppression.

  • Strong radiation fields can change the ionization state of metals and hence cooling rates. In order to understand their effects on the momentum transfer from radiation and supernova feedback, we perform a suite of radiation-hydrodynamic simulations with radiation-modulated metal cooling. For this purpose, we pre-tabulate the metal cooling rates for a variety of spectral shapes and flux levels with the spectral synthesis code, Cloudy, and accurately determine the rates based on the local radiation field strength. We find that the inclusion of the radiation-modulated metal cooling decreases the total radial momentum produced by photo-ionization heating by a factor of ~3 due to enhanced cooling at temperature T~10^3-4 K. The amount of momentum transferred from the subsequent SN explosions, however, turns out to be little affected by radiation, as the main cooling agents at T~10^5-6 K are only destroyed by soft X-ray radiation which is generally weak. We further discuss the total momentum budget in various conditions.
