  • This paper presents the analysis of core losses in capacitor-run single phase induction motors using the finite element methods. The double revolving field theory can be used for the analysis to assess the quantitative and qualitative performance of the single-phase induction motor. But it is difficult to evaluate accurately the core losses. It is more difficult to segregate stator and rotor core losses at no-load and load conditions. Numerical analysis such as FEM can be used effectively for the accurate calculation of core losses and motors performances. In this paper, the coupling method of core loss characteristic equation and FEM are proposed for the accurate calculation of core losses in the stator and rotor. The FFT is also used to calculate fundamental and harmonic components in the yoke and teeth parts of motor.

  • Acoustic characteristics in an industrial gas-turbine combustor are numerically investigated by adopting linear acoustic analysis. Spatially non-homogeneous temperature field in the combustor is considered in the numerical calculation and the characteristics are analyzed in view of acoustic instability. Acoustic analysis are conducted in the combustors without and with acoustic resonator, which is one of combustion stabilization devices. It has been reported that severe pressure fluctuation frequently occurs in the adopted combustor, and the measured signal of pressure oscillation is compared with the acoustic-pressure response from the numerical calculation. The numerical results are in a good agreement with the measurement data. In this regard, the phenomenon of pressure fluctuation in the combustor could be caused by acoustic instability. The acoustic effects of the resonators are analyzed in the viewpoints of both the frequency tuning and the damping capacity.

  • This paper presents a quasi-three-dimensional calculation method considered a spanwise mixing effect in a diagonal flow impeller. The effect of this spanwise mixing caused by spanwise distribution of blade loading is evaluated by a secondary flow theory. In order to verify the validity of this method, it is applied to the analysis of a diagonal flow fan designed under a vortex type of constant circumferential velocity and that of a free vortex. The comparison of the calculated result with experimental data shows a good agreement except the regions near the casing where the flow field is affected by the tip leakage flow.

  • This paper presents a new numerical spectral domain algorithm devoted to blocking unsuccessful automatic reclosing onto permanent faults and fault distance calculation. Arc voltage amplitude and fault distance are calculated from the fundamental and third harmonics of the terminal voltages and currents phasors. From the calculated arc voltage amplitude it can be concluded if the fault is transient arcing fault or permanent arcless fault. If the fault is permanent automatic reclosure should be blocked. The algorithm can be applied for adaptive autoreclosure, distance protection, and fault location. The results of algorithm testing through computer simulation and real field record are given.

  • Usually, equations that calculate ground resistance of earth electrode was already informed well by form of earth electrode. But, when apply on the spot because general expressions are very insufficient at point that calculate exact ground resistance value by variation of earth electrode, and constant value that corrective coefficient for ground resistance calculation is fixed regardless of change of the earth resistivity specially is presented, it is actuality that difficulty is. Therefore, in this study, about these problem, proposed corrective coefficient for calculation of ground resistance according to change of the earth resistivity.

  • This paper compared the test data with the loss when a conductor is exposed to the magnetic fieldof reactors after generating external magnetic field in specimen by means of an air core reactor model and the calculation of loss came from a tying the combination of FEM and integral method. It was applied to the loss measurement of transformers due to leakage flux.

  • The practical date of rice growing stages and the date for calculating the water demand in paddy field have differences. The causes are rice planting water requirement, nursery bed area and change of average temperature and so on. Some recent papers have shown the same results. So we have investigated the nursery period, rice transplanting period and mid-summer drainage and developed a system for estimating water demand. And we calculated the water demand by using the system. The result showed that calculation by using the new system is more appropriate than the calculation by using the established period. But because water losses in canals and crop coefficient are not determined appropriately, we can calculate the agricultural water demand more accurately by dstablishing canal losses ratio, crop coefficient and so on.

  • Most product structural components are assembled by various members and castings except casting products. In such cases, a particular structure is required to move and fix each component. In particular, the safety uncertainty of heavy product assemblies can be linked to large accidents. Thus, the safety design and evaluation of additional structures have become more important. In the field and factories, these additional structures are called handling structures, which are designed and manufactured. As the types of products produced become more diverse, the design and manufacture of a handling structure are also diversified. The results of each evaluation should be derived. We develop a logical design and evaluation method, which was previously designed based on empirical data, for the handling structure.

  • The spectroscopic studies of the 5,7-dimethoxycoumarin(5,7-DMC) and 4,5',8-trimethylpsoralen(TMP) and the conformational stability of 5,7-DMC-thymidine, 4,5',8-TMP-thymine were carried out by the CNDO/S and molecular mechanics calculation. Theoretical transition energies and direction of polarizations calculated by the CNDO/S method have been used for the interpretation of the observed results. The calculated absorption spectra of 5,7-DMC are qualitatively similar to experimental ones with their characteristic visible bands. MM2 force field calculation on the possible $C_4-cyclophotoadducts$ formed between 5,7-DMC and thymidine through a cycloaddition. of $C_3$, $C_4$ bond of 5,6-DMC to $C_5$, $C_6$ bond of thymidine showed the most stable photocycloadduct to have the anti-head to tail configuration. The major photoadduct of 4,5',8-TMP-thymine has the cis-anti configuration.

Performing linear regression with responses calculated using Monte Carlo transport codes

  • In many of the complex systems modeled in the field of nuclear engineering, it is often useful to use linear regression-based analyses to analyze relationships between model parameters and responses of interests. In cases where the response of interest is calculated by a simulation which uses Monte Carlo methods, there will be some uncertainty in the responses. Further, the reduction of this uncertainty increases the time necessary to run each calculation. This paper presents some discussion on how the Monte Carlo error in the response of interest influences the error in computed linear regression coefficients. A mathematical justification is given that shows that when performing linear regression in these scenarios, the error in regression coefficients can be largely independent of the Monte Carlo error in each individual calculation. This condition is only true if the total number of calculations are scaled to have a constant total time, or amount of work, for all calculations. An application with a simple pin cell model is used to demonstrate these observations in a practical problem.
