  • The uniformly dispersed Aramid and Poly (phenylene benzobisoxazole) (PBO) in a variety of rubber was investigated. The mechanical properties of rubber were characterized by hardness, tensile strength, elongation at break, heat resistance, oil resistance, cold resistance, ozone resistance measurements. The 3mm Aramid chopped fiber better tensile strength than the other Chopped fiber. The Aramid of 3mm chopped fiber showed excellent reinforcing in rubber composite because of homogeneous dispersion. Consequently, the best 3mm Aramid chopped fiber and rubber improved the tensile strength and elongation at break of the composite. Also, 3mm Aramid chopped fiber improved the oil-resistant, ozone resistant and cold resistant.

The cross section and surface properties in a variety of rubber were characterized by scanning electron microscopy(SEM), weight, tensile strength, cold resistance measurements. The 1mm p-Aramid chopped fiber better uniformly dispersed than the other p-Aramid chopped fiber. The p-Aramid of lmm chopped fiber showed excellent adhesion in rubber composite because of homogeneous dispersion. Consequently, the best 1mm chopped fiber and rubber improved the strength of the composite.

  • To produce a co-poly-para-aramid fiber (AF, Technora®)-reinforced neoprene rubber composite, dispersion of AF in a neoprene matrix is investigated. The AF is then surface-modified by mercerization and acetone, plasma, and silane treatments to improve dispersibility. Finally, an internal mixer process is used to disperse the surface-modified fibers in the neoprene rubber matrix.

  • Finite element analyses of structures made of the fiber reinforced composites require an adequate method to characterize the high anisotropic behavior induced by one or several layers of fiber cords with different spatial orientation embedded in a rubber matrix. This paper newly proposes a continuum based rebar element considering change of the orientation of the fiber during deformation of the composite. The mechanical behavior of the embedded fiber is modeled using two-node bar elements in order to consider the relative deformation and spatial orientation of the embedded fiber. For improvement of the analysis accuracy, the load-displacement curve of fiber is applied to the stiffness matrix of fiber. A finite element program is constructed based on the total Lagrangian formulation considering both geometric and material nonlinearity. Finite element analyses of the tensile test are carried out in order to evaluate the validity of the proposed method. Analysis results obtained with the proposed method provides realistic representation of the fiber reinforced rubber composite compared to results of other two models by the Halpin-Tsai equation and a rebar element in ABAQUS/Standard.

  • In the case of fiber/rubber composites for tire applications, the interfacial adhesion between fiber and rubber significantly affects the physical properties of the finished products. Generally, organic synthetic fibers used for tire cords are treated with resorcinol formaldehyde latex(RFL) primer on the surface of the fiber to improve the adhesion to rubber. Changes of adhesion between rubber and tire cords might weaken as temperature rises due to overheating of car engine and friction with road. In this study, the effects of temperature on the primer treated polyketone cord/rubber composites and the changes in interfacial adhesion were investigated. Polyketone cord/rubber composites were prepared after RFL solution treatment on the surface of polyketone fibers. After that, composites was thermally aged at different temperature conditions(60, 80, 100, $120^{\circ}C$) and times(1, 5, 10, 15days). The adhesion strength of polyketone cord/rubber composite treated with RFL primer was higher than untreated composite by more than 3 times. After heat aging, the adhesion strength of untreated polyketone cord/rubber composites increased while the RFL treated polyketone cord/rubber composites decreased somewhat.

  • This study compared and evaluated the mechanical properties of carbon fiber reinforced thermoplastic polymer (CFRTP) mixed with nanofillers. After mixing various nanofillers such as Multi-wall carbon nanotube (MWCNT), Silicon oxide, Core shell rubber, and Aramid nanofiber with Polyamide 6 (PA6) resin, this is used as a matrix to create a carbon fiber reinforced composite material (CFRP) was manufactured and its physical properties were measured. Depending on the type and mixing ratio of nanofiller, tensile strength, inter-laminar shear strength (ILSS), and Izod impact strength were measured. In terms of tensile strength and impact strength, the highest values were obtained when mixing core shell rubber, however the ILSS was optimal when mixing less than 1 wt.% of silicon oxide.

  • Thermoplastic film infusion process was investigated by using a rubber tool, which intrinsically contains a thermally-expandable characteristic and effectively compensates for the pressure loss caused by thermoplastic polymer infusion. Increasing temperature up to the melting temperature of matrix, the polymer melt subsequently infused into the dry fabric, but the pressure was successfully sustained by the rubber tool. Even with the decreased resin volume, the rubber tool produced sufficiently high elastic force for continuous resin infusion. Combining D'Arcy's law with the compressibility of rubber tool and elastic fiber bed, a film infusion model was developed to predict the resin infusion rate and pressure change as a function of time. In addition, the film infusion process without the rubber tool was viewed and analyzed by a compression process of the elastic fiber bed and viscous resin melt. The compressibility of fiber bed was experimentally measured and the multiple-step resin infusion was well described by the developed model equations.

  • Steel clapping plate is used to connecting rubber body in rubber dam. However, once the steel clapping plate corrodes, it may cause faults, such as the same problems experienced by typical reinforcing steel. This study evaluated the applicability of glass fiber reinforced polymer composite(GFRP) clapping plate as a substitute for steel clapping plate. Absorption and load test were conducted to evaluate the decrease in durability of GFRP clapping plate exposed to deterioration environments. In the durability test results, the absorption rate of GFRP clapping plate was appeared as 0.6~1.0% in 50 day of immersion time. Also, the fracture load decreased with accelerated degradation environment exposure. Moreover, the absorption rate in GFRP clapping plate increased as degradation progressed, reducing the fracture load.

  • The dynamic properties of short-fiber reinforced Chloroprene rubber have been studied as functions of interphase conditions and fiber content. The loss factor generally decreased with fiber content and showed different patterns according to interphase conditions. The better interphase condition showed the lower loss modulus, $E_2$. Also, the dynamic ratio decreased with fiber content and rapidly decreased in the case of double coatings, i.e., model C. Therefore, the short-fiber reinforced rubber could have the better isolation in frequency ratio($\sqrt{2}$ min.) compared to frequency ratio($\sqrt{2}$ max.). And we have investigate the possibility of applying short-fiber reinforced rubber to automotive engine mount.

  • The fatigue properties of short nylon66 fiber reinforced Chloroprene rubber have been investigated as functions of interphase conditions and fiber content. The spring constant of rubber decreased about 21% after the fatigue test. On the contrary, that of reinforced rubber increased in all cases. The changing rate of spring constant for reinforced rubber decreased with increasing fiber content. This means that the better interphase condition, the smaller changing rate of spring constant. Temperature of matrix increased about 2.5 times and one of reinforced rubber showed 1.7∼2 times up after the test. The changing rate of temperature for reinforced rubber during fatigue test decreased with increasing fiber content. It is found that the better interphase condition, the smaller changing rate of specimen temperature at the same fiber content. Double coatings of bonding agent 402 and rubber solution became the best interphase model in this study. And, we have investigated the possibility of applying short-fiber reinforced rubber to automotive engine mount rubber, bush and stopper.
