  • Electronic Speckle Pattern Interferometry(ESPI) is one of optical technique to measure displacement precisely, uses CCD camera to show result image in real time. General ESPI system measures in-plane or out-of-plane displacement. Shearography is one of electronic speckle pattern interferometric methods which allow full-field observation of surface displacement derivatives and it is robust in vibration. The shearography provides non-contacting technique of evaluating defects nondestructively. In this study, the shearography was used to evaluate defects in Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic(CFRP). Various sizes of artificial defects were embedded in various depths of woven CFRP plate. Effects due to the variation of size and depth of defects were evaluated in this study.

  • Strengthening concrete structures using FRP composites is a commonly considered technology in many practical situations. The success of the strengthening intervention largely depends on adequate bond between FRP sheets and the concrete substrate. In recent years, techniques to anchor FRP sheets in applications where sheets must develop strength in a short length have been proposed. One of these techniques includes use of FRP anchors embedded into the concrete substrate and forming part of the composite strengthening system. This paper presents the results of studies conducted recently at the University of Massachusetts Amherst to advance the understanding on the behavior of FRP anchored systems.

  • The aim of present study was to examine the effect of carrageenan on the tendon of skeletal muscle of rat. The tendon damage was induced by injection of carrageenan into skeletal hind muscle of rats. Rats were killed on 48 hours after carrageenan injection. The resulting tendons were fixed with 10% neutral buffered formalin (NBF), dehydrated, embedded, sectioned by 4 μm, and stained by phosphotungstic acid hematoxylin (PTAH) or hematoxylin-eosin (H-E). Carrageenan induced the segregation of tendon fibers, intratendinous cleft, segregation of muscle cell group, wave arrangement of tendon fiber. The results suggest that carrageenan induced tendon damage of rat's skeletal muscle by morphological changes.

  • The fiber reinforced laminated composite structures are very susceptible to be damaged when they are impacted by foreign objects. To increase the impact resistance of the laminated composite structures, shape memory alloy(SMA) thin film is embedded in the structure. For the numerical impact analysis of SMA hybrid composite structures, SMA modeling tool is developed to consider pseudoelastic effect of SMAs. Moreover, the damage analysis is considered using failure criteria and a simple damage model for reasonable impact analysis. The numerical results are verified with the experimental ones. Impact analyses for composite plate with pre-strained SMAs are numerically performed and the damage areas are investigated.

  • The new energy-based criterion, named Reinforcement Strain Energy Density (ReiSED), is proposed to investigate the fracture behavior of the cracked orthotropic materials in which the crack is embedded in the matrix along the fibers. ReiSED is an extension of the well-known minimum strain energy density criterion. The concept of the reinforced isotropic solid as an advantageous model is the basis of the proposed mixed-mode I/II criterion. This model introduces fibers as reinforcements of the isotropic matrix in orthotropic materials. The effects of fibers are qualified by defining reinforcement coefficients at tension and shear modes. These coefficients, called Reduced Stress (ReSt), provide the possibility of encompassing the fiber fraction in a fracture criterion for the first time. Comparing ReiSED fracture limit curve with experimental data proves the high efficiency of this criterion to predict the fracture behavior of orthotropic materials.

  • FBG Sensor, which is smaller than strain gauge and has better durability and does not have a noise from electromagnetic waves, was adapted to develope a smart anchor. A series of pullout tests were performed to verify the feasibility of smart anchor and find out the load transfer mechanism around the steel wire fixed to rock with grout. Distribution of shear stresses at steel wire-grout interface is assessed from the measured strain distribution by the optical fiber sensors and compared with stress distributions predicted by Farmer's and Aydan's formulas. It was found that present theoretical formulas may underestimate the failure depth and magnitude of shear stresses when the pullout loads increase.

  • The main purpose of this study is the vibration suppression of rotating composite blade containing distributed piezoelectric sensors and actuators. The blade is modeled by thin-walled, single cell composite beam including the warping function, centrifugal force, Coriolis acceleration and piezoelectric effect. Further, the numerical study is performed m ing finite element method. The vibration of composite rotor is suppressed by piezocomposite actuators and PVDF sensors that are embedded between composite layers. A velocity feedback control algorithm coupling the direct and converse piezoelectric effect is used to actively control the' dynamic response of an integrated structure through a closed control loop. Responses of the rotating blade are investigated. Newmark time integration method is used to calculate the time response of the model. In the numerical simulation, the effect of parameters such as rotating speed, fiber orientation of the blade and size of actuators are studied in detail.

  • In this paper, a study on fracture characteristics of chemically prestressed mortar with addition of expansive additives was carried out. Uni-axial tension tests with reinforced mortar specimen restrained by embedded reinforcing bar and three point bending tests with notched steel fiber reinforced beams were carried out to verify the characteristics of the cracking behavior, the tension stiffening effect due to bond between rebar and mortar, and fracture characteristic. Tension stiffening curve for the chemically prestressed mortar was obtained from uni-axial tension test. And increased fracture energy due to the chemical prestress was also obtained from bending test and tension softening curve for chemically prestressed mortar was also obtained.

  • A pneumatic tire is made up of many flexible filaments of high modulus cord of natural textile, synthetic polymer, glass fiber, or fine hard drawn steel embedded in and bonded to a matrix of low modulus polymetric material. Adhesion property of these materials is very important in tire durability safety because belt-leaving-belt tread separation reduces the ability of a driver to control a vehicle, whether or not the separation is accompanied by a loss of air. In this study adhesion test of carcass-belt-tread is conducted on material properties of 5 PCR tire model, which are on sale in domestic market and analyzed adhesion properties. For those tire models FMVSS 109 indoor high speed durability test is conducted to analyze the correlation between adhesion force and high speed performance of tires and found the correlation between the two test results.
