Dual Wavelength Erbium-doped Fiber Laser with Lasing Wavelength Switchability and Tunability (파장 가변 및 스위칭이 가능한 쌍파장 어븀 첨가 광섬유 레이저)

  • A simple technique for a flexibly tunable and switchable dual wavelength-switchable erbium-doped fiber (EDF) laser using fiber Bragg gratings is proposed and demonstrated by using both linear cavity loss controlling and homogeneous gain broadening of the EDF. The oscillating wavelength switching is successfully realized by using the modulation of the acousto-optic modulator driven by the RF signal. The wavelength spacing and lasing wavelength of the proposed wavelength-switchable laser can also be controlled by using the bending-induced tension or compression strain. The proposed tunable dual wavelength-switchable fiber laser has a lot of advantages, such as a high extinction ratio larger than 40dB and a high tunability of ~7.2 nm/$m^{-1}$.

Damage Analysis of Singly Oriented Ply Fiber Metal Laminate under Concentrated Loading Conditions by Using Acoustic Emission (음향 방출법을 이용한 집중하중을 받는 일방향 섬유 금속 적층판의 손상 해석)

  • In this research, damage behavior of singly oriented ply (SOP) fiber metal laminate (FML) subjected to concentrated load was studied. The static indentation tests were conducted to study fiber orientation effect on damage behavior of FML. During the static indentation tests, acoustic emission technique (AE) was adopted to study damage characteristics of FML. AE signals were obtained by using AE sensor with 150kHz resonance frequency and the signals were compared with indentation curves of FML. The damage process of SOP FML was divided by three parts, i.e., crack initiation, crack propagation, and penetration. The AE characteristics during crack initiation show that the micro crack is initiated at lower ply of the plate, then propagate along the thickness of the plate with creating tiber debonding. The crack grow along the fiber direction with occurring 60∼80dB AE signal. During the penetration, the fiber breakage was observed. As fiber orientation increases, talc fiber breakage occurs more frequently. The AE signal behaviors support these results. Cumulative AE counts could well predict crack initiation and crack propagation and AE amplitude were useful for the prediction of damage failure mode.

FRACTURE STRENGTH OF COMPOSITE RESIN WITH VARIOUS FIBER REINFORCING MATERIALS (수종의 섬유보강재가 복합레진의 파절강도에 미치는 영향)

  • The effect of fiber reinforcing materials on the fracture strength of composite resin was evaluated. Each ten composite resin bars reinforced by glassfiber[Fiber-Splint ML$^{(R)}$(Polydentia SA, Switzerland)], polyethylene fiber [Ribbond$^{(R)}$(Ribbond Inc., U.S.A.)] and polyaramid fiber[Kevlar$^{(R)}$(DuPont, U.S.A.)] were loaded under the 3-point compression technique. Another ten pure composite resin bars without reinforcement were used as a control group. Then mean fracture strength and standard deviation were calculated and a ANOVA and Scheffe test were used in statistics. The results were as follows: 1. Kevlar group showed the highest fracture strength as 175.5MPa (p<0.05). Fiber-Splint ML group showed the lowest fracture strength as 112.7MPa. 2. The mean value of fracture strength in Ribbond group was 136.4MPa, and that of unterated control group was 143.6MPa. No difference was found between the two groups. 3. Ribbond and Kevlar reinforcement groups showed a catastrophic failure, where complete separation of pieces occurs to a unseparated fracture pattern. The use of Kevlar reinforcement fibers with composite resin showed significant increase in the average load failure and the presence of the fibers did prevent the catastrophic crack propagation present in the unreinforced samples. The use of Ribbond reinforcement fibers with composite resin showed no significant increase in the average load failure. However, the presence of the fibers did prevent the catastrophic crack propagation. Because high strength of glassfiber are rapidly degraded on exposure to moisture and humidity. The use of Fiber-Splint ML reinforcement fibers with composite resin showed significant decrease in the average load failure and displayed catastrophic fractures.

Structural Performance of Reinforced Concrete Beams Strengthened with Sprayed Fiber Reinforced Polymers (Sprayed FRP로 보강된 철근콘크리트 보의 보강성능에 관한 연구)

  • The main purpose of this study is to develop a sprayed FRP repair and strengthening method, which is a new technique for strengthening the existing concrete structures by mixing one of the carbon or glass chopped fibers and one of the epoxy or vinyl ester resins with high-speed compressed air in open air and randomly spraying the mixture onto the concrete surface. At present, the sprayed FRP repair and strengthening method using the epoxy resin has not been fully discussed. In order to investigate the material property of the sprayed FRP, this study carried out tensile tests of the material specimens, which were changed with the combinations of various variables including the length of chopped fiber and the mixture ratio of chopped fiber and resin. These variables were set to have the equal material strength, compared with that of one layer of the FRP sheet. As a result, the optimal length of glass and carbon chopped fibers was fumed out to be 38 mm, and the optimal mixture ratio between chopped fiber and resin was also turned out to be 1 : 2 from each variable. And also, the thickness of the sprayed FRP to have the equal strength to one layer of the FRP sheet was finally calculated. In is study, a series of experiments were carried out to evaluate the strengthening effects of flexural beams, shear beams and damaged beams strengthened with the sprayed FRP method, respectively. The results revealed that the strengthening effects of the flexural and shear specimens were reasonably similar to those of the FRP sheet, and the developed Sprayed FRP technique is able to be used as a strengthening scheme of existing RC building.

  • This study suggests a strengthening effect evaluation technique of reinforced concrete beams using the vibration test. To evaluate the strengthening effect of R/C beams, Strengthening Factor(Sf) was suggested. Using the value of Sf, 20 beams were evaluated. According to these results the effects of R/C beams strengthened by steel plate is superior than those of R/C beams strengthened by carbon fiber sheet.

  • Optical transport has been sucessfully developed as a fast information transfer since 1970s, and a WDM system, based on the wavelength division multiplexing technique, was implemented to the backbone network. The WDM technique is able to improve its data traffic by utilizing its optical fiber efficiently, and is suitable for an easy network operation and management. Therefore, trend for DWDM, which is known to be one of DWM system being currently used, and the direction for optical network development will be investigated in this study.

  • We studied experimentally a discrete random phase-code multiplexing technique for holographic data storage, which we believe can overcome some disadvantages of conventional random phase-code multiplexing adopting either a diffusion plate or a multimode fiber. Experimental demonstration is presented to show the potential usefulness and some characteristics of the discrete random phase-code multiplexing technique.

  • An optical transmitter was designed and implemented using a commercially available LiNbO$_{3}$ Mach-Zehnder modulator and the power amplifiers. We have adopted a new method to stabilize the bias voltage of the modulator using the second order harmonic component of the dithering signal. This technique has been applied successfully to the 2.5 Gbit/s external modulator for more than 6 hours without bit error rate degradaton. We demonstrated a repeaterless transmission of a 2.5 Gbit/s signal over 150 km nondispersion-shifted fiber using the transmitter. The receiver sensitivity was -34.5 dBm at 10$_{-10}$ bit error rate. No appreciable BER degradation due to fiber dispersion were observed after transmission.

  • During the past decades, development of reinforcing materials caused a revolution in the structure of high strength and high performance cement-based concrete. Among the most important and exciting reinforcing materials, Steel Fiber (SF) becomes a widely used in the recent years. The main reason for addition of SF is to enhance the toughness and tensile strength and limit development and propagation of cracks and deformation characteristics of the SF blended concrete. Basically this technique of strengthening the concrete structures considerably modifies the physical and mechanical properties of plain cement-based concrete which is brittle in nature with low flexural and tensile strength compared to its intrinsic compressive strength. This paper presents an overview of the work carried out on the use of SF as reinforcement in cement-based concrete matrix. Reported properties in this study are fresh properties, mechanical and durability of the blended concretes.

A Study on the Remote Detection of a Hydraulic Cylinder Stroke Using Optical Fiber Sensors (광파이버센서를 이용한 유압실린더 스트로크의 원격 검출에 관한 연구)

  • In order to comprise a basic closed-loop control system for hydraulic systems it is necessary to detect the piston rod stroke of a hydraulic cylinder. There are many conventional type sensors which can detect the displacement of cylinders. However, they cannot reveal the original performance normally or they cannot be applied at all where the operating circumstance of cylinders is beyond specifications of sensors. Especially, for the purpose of detecting the strokes of cylinders mounted on heavy equipments, a special exclusive sensor must be used because the operating circumstances of heavy equipments are so severe that general purpose sensors cannot endure such circumstance as shock and a residual vibration induced by rough works. In this paper, an exclusive method for detecting the piston rod stroke for heavy equipments is suggested, which adopts a remote detecting technique using optical fiber sensors. Several experiments using the prototype are executed for verifying the effectiveness of the suggested method and the possibility of the accurate detection of stroke.
