The large-scale structures have the possibility that there are defects such as cracks due to stress concentration caused by geometric discontinuities in the structure. In this respect, the assessment of fatigue life and the development of structural health monitoring(SHM) are very important. Fatigue design of structure is typically accomplished either using a set of stress cycle (S-N) data obtained from fatigue tests or using the fracture mechanics approach. The stress intensity factor(SIF) is required for the estimation of fatigue crack propagation life from the linear elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM) perspective. In this study, Macro Fiber Composie(MFC) sensor for the measurement of SIF of two dimensional cracks is used. The SIF based on the piezoelectric constitutive law and fracture mechanics are calculated. The measured values of the SIF are later used for the prediction of the crack propagation life. In this study, the measured value of the SIF and the fatigue life are compared with the theoretical results.
Optimal dispersion and fabrication conditions of carbon nanotube (CNT) embedded in phenolic resin were determined by electrical resistance measurement; and interfacial property was investigated between plasma treated carbon fiber and CNT-phenolic composites by electro-micromechanical techniques. Wettability of carbon fiber was improved significantly after plasma treatment. Surface energies of carbon fiber and CNT-phenolic nanocomposites were measured using Wilhelmy plate technique. Since surface activation of carbon fiber, the advancing contact angle decreased from $65^{\circ}$ to $28^{\circ}$ after plasma treatment. It was consistent with static contact angle results of carbon fiber. Work of adhesion between plasma treated carbon fiber and CNT-phenolic nanocomposites was higher than that without modification. The interfacial shear strength (IFSS) and apparent modulus also increased with plasma treatment of carbon fiber.

The crystal structure of nylon 56 fibers post extended by drawing process was investigated by synchrotron x-ray scattering measurement. In as-cast fiber, distinct (004) and (020) diffraction peaks were observed and they were related to initial metastable alignment of nylon molecules. With increase in the drawing ratio, (110) peak intensity was increased in vertical direction with decreasing (020) peak. At the same time, (004)' peak evolved position tilted to 29 degrees from the (004) peak. This evolution is directly related to stable crystalline phase of nylon 56 originated from additional formation of hydrogen bondings between N-H and C=O by post drawing process. We also compared density variation, stress-strain curves of the fiber as a function of drawing ratio and strain. The variations of density and tanacity also supported the increase of stable structure of nylon 56.

As concrete structures are heated, thermal strain can be developed. Because of the boundary conditions, the thermal stress may be arisen. Thermal strain and temperature were measured simultaneously using an optical fiber sensor. Fiber Bragg Grating Sensor(FBG sensor) was used in the measurement. Because it can measure the strains more than two points with one line, it was possible to measure both thermal strain and temperature with one line. To compare data measured by FBG sensor, strain and temperature were measured using strain gauge and thermocouple. The FBG sensor could measure the strain under the temperature greater than $60^{\circ}C$ but strain gauge couldn't. Both the FBG temperature sensor and thermocouple could measure the temperature and the results are related each other linearly.

In this study, in order to directly evaluate the prestress of the PSC structure, a new sensor module based on the measurement of the deformation of concrete was proposed using hetero-core optical fibers and performance tests were performed. In a hetero-core optical fiber, optical loss occurs when a specific part of the transmission path is bent, and the amount of optical loss changes linearly according to the magnitude of the curvature. In order to confirm the measurement performance of the sensor module and the applicability of the optical fiber, the sensor module was deformed and the light passing through the optical fiber was converted into wattage and measured. It can be seen that the light passing through the optical fiber has a linearity of 0.9333 in relation to the deformation while generating the maximum deformation of 0.5 mm at a rate of 0.12 mm/min in a cylindrical concrete specimen with a diameter of 15 cm and a height of 35 cm in which the sensor module is embedded. Based on the results of this experiment, it is judged that it is possible to directly evaluate the prestress of a PSC structure by embedding a sensor module using a hetero-core optical fiber in the structure and measuring the compression deformation in concrete. It is judged that it can be used as useful data for the development of a sheath tube integrated sensor module to be applied to be applied to the girder model experiment.
Longitudinal strains (${\varepsilon}_x$) of the core and skin layers in glass fiber reinforced plastic (GFRP) cross-ply composite laminates have been measured using the embedded optical fiber sensor of absolute extrinsic Fabry-Perot interferometer (A-EFPI). Transmission optical microscopy was used to investigate the damage behavior around the A-EFPI sensor. Foil-type strain gauges bonded on both the upper and lower surfaces were used for the measurement of the surface strains. It was shown that values of ${\varepsilon}_x$ in the interior of the skin layer and the core layer measured by embedded A-EFPI sensor were significantly higher than that of the specimen surface measured by strain gauges. The experimental results agreed well with those from finite element analysis on the basis of uniform stress model. Large strains in the core layer led to the occurrence of many transverse cracks which drastically reduced the strain at failure of optical fiber sensor embedded in the core layer.
Interfacial evaluation was investigated for single-carbon fiber/phenolic and carbon nanotube (CNT)-phenolic composites by micromechanical technique and electrical resistance measurement combined with wettability test. Compressive strength of pure phenol and CNT-phenolic composites were compared using Broutman specimen. The contact resistance of CNT-phenolic composites was obtained using a gradient specimen by two and four-point methods. Surface energies and wettability by dynamic contact angle measurement were measured using Wilhelmy plate technique. Since hydrophobic domains are formed as heterogeneous microstructure of CNT in the surface, the dynamic contact angle exhibited more than $90^{\circ}$. CNT-phenolic composites exhibited a higher apparent modulus than neat phenolic case due to better stress transferring effect. Work of adhesion, $W_a$ between single-carbon fiber and CNT-phenolic composites exhibited higher than neat phenolic resin due to the enhanced viscosity by CNT addition. It was consistent with micro-failure patterns in microdroplet test.
Nondestructive damage sensitivity of carbon nanotube(CNT) and nanofiber (CNF)/epoxy composites with their adding contents was investigated using electro-micromechanical technique. Carbon black (CB) was used only for the comparison with CNT and CNF. The fracture of carbon fiber was detected by acoustic emission (AE), which was correlated to the change in electrical resistance, ΔR under double-matrix composites (DMC) test. Stress sensing on carbon nanocomposites was performed by electro-pullout test under uniform cyclic loading. At the same volume fraction, the damage sensitivity for fiber fracture, matrix deformation and stress sensing were highest for CNT/epoxy composite, whereas for CB/epoxy composite they were the lowest among three carbon nanomaterials (CNMs). Damage sensitivity was correlated with morphological observation of carbon nanocomposites. Homogeneous dispersion among CNMs could be keying parameters for better damage monitoring. In this study, damage sensing of carbon nanocomposites could be evaluated well nondestructively by the electrical resistance measurement with AE.
During the compression molding process of the continuous fiber-reinforced polymeric composites, two main problems such as fiber-matrix separation and fiber orientation are produced by the difference of flow velocity. Molded parts are lead to be nonhomogeneous and anisotropic. As the mechanical property of the products are dependent on the separation and orientation, it is important to research the fiber mat structure and molding condition. If the fiber mat structure is changed by the increment of needling, the separation decreases and after compression molding the orientation is easily aligned. As it were, the compression moldability is good. But the defects as tears, thin thickness are produced in the products. Therefore, it is important to clarify the moldability in relation to the usage of products and the expenses of produce on the actual process. Therefore we must make the measurement methods that can define the moldability of products. In this research, the effects of the fiber mat structure(NP = 0, 5, 10, 25, 50 punches/$cm^2$) and the mold geometry($r_p$ = 1, 25, 50 mm) on the moldability of products were discussed. We investigated the case of one-dimensional flow in order to obtain the degree of nonhomogeneity and the fiber orientation function. In result, we could gain the correlation coefficient of the continuous fiber-reinforced polymeric composites. Also we experimented on the cup-type compression molding which was appeared the wrinkle on the flange part by the complex stress condition in order to gain the degree of nonhomogeneity and area ratio. In result, the moldability of products was expressed as the correlation coefficient and area ratio.
In this paper axial loading tests on low strength concrete members, which were confined with various thickness of carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composite sheets are described. Totally 46 specimens with circular, square and rectangular cross-sections with unconfined concrete compressive strengths between 6 and 10 MPa were included in the test program. During the tests, a photogrammetrical deformation measurement technique was also used, as well as conventional measurement techniques. The contribution of external confinement with CFRP composite sheets to the compressive behavior of the specimens with low strength concrete is evaluated quantitatively, in terms of strength, longitudinal and lateral deformability and energy dissipation. The effects of width/depth ratios and the corner radius of the specimens with rectangular cross-section on the axial behavior were also examined. It was seen that the effectiveness of the external confinement with CFRP composite sheets is much more pronounced, when the unconfined concrete compressive strength is relatively lower. It was also found that the available analytical expressions proposed for normal or high strength concrete confined by CFRP sheets could not predict the strength and deformability of CFRP confined low strength concrete accurately. New expressions are proposed for the compressive strength and the ultimate axial strain of CFRP confined low strength concrete.
