Fiber Reinforced Polymer, FRP has a light weight, a high tensile strength based on design, non-electronic, non-magnetic, and rust-resistant feature, etc and many researches are being conducted recently on FRP in the construction area. Among them, GFRP (Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer) is excellent in price competitiveness and is widely being used. However, since GFRP has a relative low modulus of elasticity and causes excessive deflection, the section must be large to be used as a structural component and an investigative review must be carried out in design to set the limit for deflection by the use load. Therefore, in order to solve the mentioned technical problems, this study suggested a section of a module form such that application of a large-scale section is possible. Also, to secure the low rigidity of FRP, this study developed a new FRP+ concrete composite girder form that confined the concrete. To identify the structural movement of the developed FRP+ concrete composite girder, shear strength test was carried out.

Fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) reinforcing rebar with non-corrosive property is suggested as an alternative replacement to steel reinforcing rebar due to its enhanced durability and non-corrosive characteristics. Currently, a limited number of glass fiber reinforced polymer rebar (GFRP) are sold commercially due to their high cost, relatively low performances, and brittle failure characteristics. Therefore, the performance enhancements and cost reduction of GFRP rebar are needed to increase its applications in construction fields. The intent of this study is to develop high performance GFRP rebar by improving its tensile and shear properties. Also, in order to reduce manufacturing costs, factors such as material composition and manufacturing process were evaluated to improve manufacturing efficiency. Finally a GFRP rebar with enhanced material properties and less expensive than the GFRP rebar currently sold in the market was manufactured and evaluated for its application possibility in construction fields.

The shrinkages of injection molded parts are different in molding operational conditions and mold design. It also differs from resins. The shrinkages of injection molded parts for PBT (polybutylene terephthalate), PC (polycarbonate),and glass reinforced PBT and PC have been studied for various operational conditions of injection molding. The part shrinkage of crystalline polymer, PBT was higher than that of amorphous polymer, PC by about two times. The part shrinkages of both polymers decreased as glass fiber content increases. Higher Injection temperature and lower injection pressure resulted in a higher shrinkage in both PBT and PC resins. As mold temperature increases the part shrinkage of PC decreased. However, the part shrinkage of PBT increased as mold temperature increases. The part shrinkage of both PBT and PC resins decreased as gate size increases since the pressure delivery is mush easier for a larger gate size. The part shrinkage of flow direction was less than that of the perpendicular direction to the flow for both pure and glass fiber reinforced resins. The part shrinkage at the position close to the gate was less than that of the position far from the gate.

A recent and promising method for shear strengthening of reinforced concrete(RC) members is the use of near surface mounted(NSM) fiber reinforced polymer(FRP) reinforcement. In the NSM method, the reinforcement is embedded in grooves cut onto the surface of the member to be strengthened and filled with an appropriate binding agent such as epoxy paste or cement grout. This paper illustrates a research program on shear strengthening of RC beams with NSM channel-type FRP beams which is developed in this study. The objective of this study is to clarify the role of channel-type FRP beam embedded to the beam web for shear strengthening of reinforced concrete beams. Included in the study are effectiveness in terms of spacing and angle of channel-type FRP beams, strengthening method, and shear span ratio. the study also aims to understand the additional shear capacity due to glass fiber reinforced polymer beams and carbon reinforced polymer beams. And anther objective is to study the failure modes, shear strengthening effect on ultimate force and load deflection behavior of RC beams embedded with channel-type FRP beams on the shear region of the beams.
This paper presents the experimental results of flexural behavior of steel beam strengthened with fiber reinforced polymer plastic (FRP) strips subjected to static bending loading. Four H beams were fabricated strengthened with aramid strips and carbon strips and one control specimen were also fabricated. Among them two specimens were strengthened with partial length. The H-beams had two types of failure mode, depending on the length of the FRP strips:(1) strip debonding in beams with partial length reinforcement and (2) strip rupture in beams with full length reinforcement. From the test, it was observed that maximum increase of 16% was also achieved in bending-load capacity.

Three different types of additives, thiokol, epoxidized natural rubber (ENR) and epoxidized linseed oil (ELO), were dispersed in an epoxy matrix before being used in glass fiber (GF) composites, and their effects on the mechanical and dielectric properties of epoxy resin and glass fiber reinforced epoxy composites (GF/EP) were examined. The addition of each of 7 phr ENR, 9 phr ELO and 5 phr thiokol into the epoxy resin increased the fracture toughness significantly by 56.9, 43.1, and 80.0%, respectively, compared to the unmodified resin. The mode I interlaminar fracture toughness of the GF/EP at propagation was also improved by 26.9, 18.3 and 32.7% when each of 7 phr ENR, 9 phr ELO, and 5 phr thiokol, respectively, was dispersed in the epoxy matrix. Scanning electron microscopy showed that the additives reduced crack growth in the GF/EP, whereas their dielectric measurements showed that all these additives had no additional effect on the real permittivity and loss factor of the GF/EP.

Thermo-mechanical behaviors of polymer matrix composite(PMC) with continuous TiNi fiber are studied using theoretical analysis with 1-D analytical model and numerical analysis with 2-D multi-fiber finite element(FE) model. It is found that both compressive stress in matrix and tensile stress in TiNi fiber are the source of strengthening mechanisms and thermo-mechanical coupling. Thermal expansion of continuous TiNi fiber reinforced PMC has been compared with various mechanical behaviors as a function of fiber volume fraction, degree of pre-strain and modulus ratio between TiNi fiber and polymer matrix. Based on the concept of so-called shape memory composite(SMC) with a permanent shape memory effect, the critical modulus ratio is determined to obtain a smart composite with no or minimum thermal deformation. The critical modulus ratio should be a major factor for design and manufacturing of SMC.

The use of FRP(Fiber Reinforced Polymer) bars to replace conventional steel bars in reinforcing concrete structures is currently encouraged by many structural engineers, especially for their noncorrosive properties. The partial inferiority of the bond and mechanical properties for FRP bars, however, leads to wider and deeper cracks compared with those of steel reinforced concrete structures. This paper presents experimental results of concrete beams reinforced with FRP bars tested under static loading conditions up to failure. The study focuses on the effects of the reinforcement ratio on the behavior of concrete beams at various stages during loading. The study also attempts to establish a theoretical basis for the development of simple and rational design procedures for concrete beams reinforced with FRP bars.
The shear failure modes of fiber reinforced polymer(FRP) strengthened concrete beams are quite different to those of the beams strengthened with steel stirrups. When the beams are strengthened with larger amount of FRP composites, the beams normally fail in shear due to concrete crushing before the FRP reaches its rupture strain. In order to predict the shear strength of such beams, the actual rupture strain must be known. The equations previously reported in the technical literature adopt an effective reduction factor for the rupture strain. These equations may not be applicable to FRP strengthened RC beams that are beyond the experimental application limits, because most of these equations are empirical in nature. This paper presents the results of an analytical study on the performance of reinforced concrete beams externally wrapped with FRP composites and internally reinforced with conventional steel stirrups.
