In this study the mechanical behaviors of fiber metal laminates(FMLs) such as ARALL, GLARE and CARE which are recently developed as new structural materials and known to have excellent fatigue resistant characteristics while with relatively low densities compared to the conventional aluminum materials, are considered through the classical lamination theory. The mechanical properties such as elastic moduli, thermal expansion coefficients and hygro-thermally induced residual stresses in the fiber metal laminates are obtained and compared each other. Also, carpet plots of effective elastic moduli, Poisson's ratio and the thermal expansion coefficient for GLARE FML are plotted.
A design method is proposed to optimize the stacking sequence of laminated composite plates for desired vibration characteristics. The objective functions are the natural frequencies of the laminated plates, and three types of optimization problems are studied where the fundamental frequency and the difference of two adjacent frequencies are maximized, and the difference between the target and actual frequencies is minimized. The design variables are a set of discrete values of fiber orientation angles with prescribed increment in the layers of the plates. The four lamination parameters are used to describe the bending property of a symmetrically laminated plate, and are optimized by a gradient method in the first stage. A new technique is introduced in the second stage to convert from the optimum four lamination parameters into the stacking sequence that is composed of the optimum fiber orientation angles of all the layers. Plates are divided into sub-domains composed of the small number of layers and designed sequentially from outer domains. For each domain, the optimum angles are determined by minimizing the errors between the optimum lamination parameters obtained in the first step and the parameters for all possible discrete stacking sequence designs. It is shown in numerical examples that this design method can provide with accurate optimum solutions for the stacking sequence of vibrating composite plates with various boundary conditions.

Recently, the fiber composite materials such as carbon fiber, glass fiber, or aramid, have been frequently used in strengthening reinforced concrete structures. The fiber composite materials typically have orthotropic characteristic and the strength changes significantly acording to the direction of fibers and the method of the lamination. In this study, an algorithm to estimate the stress-strain relationship of the composite materials which have different fiber directions and symmetric or non-symmetric lamination has been developed by using Tsai-Hill and Tsai-Wu failure criteria and progressive laminate failure theory. This algorithm has been implemented to several stress-strain models for the laterally confined concrete compression members such as Mander, Hosotani, and Nakatsuka. The evaluated stress-strain behaviors by the different models are discussed.
In this study, an accurate 2-noded hybrid-mixed element for continuous fiber-reinforced laminated beams is newly proposed. The present element including the effect of shear deformation is based on Hellinger-Reissner variational principle, and introduces additional consistent node less degrees for displacement field interpolation in order to enhance the numerical performance. The micromechanical and lamination theory are employed in the finite element description to consider the effects of the laminate stacking sequences, material orthotropy, and fiber volume fraction, etc. The element stiffness matrix can be explicitly derived through the stationary condition and static condensation using Mathematica program. Several numerical examples confirm the accuracy of the present hybrid-mixed element and also show in detail the effects of the continuous fiber volume fraction, stacking sequences and boundary condition on the bending behavior of laminated beams.

The fiber-reinforced composite materials have been advanced for various applications because of its excellent mechanical and electromagnetic properties. On their manufacturing processes, however, thermo-curing inherently produces the undesired thermal deformation mainly from temperature drop from the process temperature to the room temperature, so called spring-back. The spring-back must be removed to keep the precision of designed shape. In this research, the spring-back of {glass fiber / epoxy}+{carbon fiber / epoxy} unsymmetric hybrid composites were predicted using Classical Lamination Theory (CLT), and compared with the experimental data. Additionally, using finite element analysis (ANSYS), the predicted data and experimental data were compared. The predicted values by CLT and ANSYS were well matched with experimental data.

In vibration-free vehicles such as limousine buses, the vibration is minimized by installing an air spring instead of the leaf spring used in the existing freight cars to prevent the damage to the loaded cargo from shocks generated during movement. In the existing vehicles, steel structures support the air spring system. This study was aimed at replacing the steel structures used in the Z-spring by carbon fiber and glass fiber reinforced plastics. In addition, the mechanical properties (elastic modulus, tensile strength, and shear strength) of carbon fiber and glass fiber prepreg were derived using specimens molded with the corresponding prepreg. The final goal was to develop a material lighter than the conventional steel material but with enhanced mechanical properties. Although the CF prepreg exhibited excellent mechanical properties, the production cost was extremely high. To overcome this limitation, hybrid composites with GF prepreg were examined, which are expected to be promising future materials.
The optimum design of hybrid laminated composites for iso-strain structure has been studied by controling fiber orientations and thicknesses of each layer. Fiber orientations and thicknesses of each layer for iso-strain structure were designed. Combining the laminates of each layer of different reinforcing material, the constitutions of hybrid laminated composite for iso-strain structure were obtained. All these calculations were formed on computer systems, automatically for the hybridization. Using the data of some specific laminated composite such as glass and aramid reinforced composites, the constitutions of hybrid laminated composites for iso-strains structure were designed and verified by lamination theory. The strains of each layer of hybrid laminated composites are calculated and they turned out to be good agreements with the results obtained lamination theory.
A drop weight impact test was conducted in this study to analyze the mechanical and thermal properties caused by the changes in the ratio of carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) to ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) laminations. The ratios of CFRP to EVA were changed from 10:0 (pure CFRP) to 9:1, 8:2, 6:4, and 5:5 by manufacturing five different types of samples, and at the same time, the mechanical/thermal properties were analyzed with thermo-graphic images. As the ratio of the CFRP lamination was increased, in which the energy absorbance is dispersed by the fibers, it was more likely for the brittle failure mode to occur. In the cases of Type 3 through Type 5, in which the role of the EVA sheet is more prominent because it absorbs the impact energy rather than dispersing it, a clear form of puncture failure mode was observed. Based on the above results, it was found that all the observation values decreased as the EVA lamination increased compared with the CFRP lamination. The EVA lamination was thus found to have a very important role in reducing the impact. However, the strain and temperature were inversely propositional.

There is a big move to build zero-energy buildings in the form of passive houses that reduce energy waste worldwide. Korea has set a goal of reducing its greenhouse gas emissions by 37% by 2030 through the activation of green buildings, such as strengthening the energy levels of new buildings and improving the energy efficiency of existing buildings. The use of insulation with high insulation performance is one of the key technologies to realize this, and vacuum insulation is the next generation insulation that blocks the energy flow of the building. In this study, we measured the bonding structure of dry and wet processing glass fiber core materials and compared the insulation performance of vacuum insulation panel. In addition, the insulation performance of vacuum insulation panel was measured according to the thickness of the laminated core. It can be confirmed that the lamination structure of the core and the lamination thickness are important factors for the heat insulating performance of the vacuum insulating panel.
