One of the most important factors that should be considered for using any ground improvement technique is the stability of stabilized soil and the durability of the provided solution for getting the required engineering properties. Generally, most of the earth structures that are constructed on clayey soils are exposing movements due to the long periods of drying or wetting cycles. Over time, environmental changes may result in swells or settlements for these structures. In order to mitigate this problem, this research has been performed on mixtures of high plasticity clay with traditional additives such as lime, cement and non-traditional additives such as polypropylene fiber. The purpose of the research is to assess the most appropriate ground improvement technique by using commercially available additives for resisting the developed desiccation cracks during the drying process and resisting the volume changes that may result during wet/dry cycles as an attempt to simulate the changes of environmental conditions. The results show that the fiber-reinforced samples have the lowest volumetric deformation in comparision with cement and lime stabilized samples, and the optimum fiber content is identified as 0.38%. In addition, the desiccation cracks were not visible on the samples' surface for both unreinforced and chemically stabilized samples. Regarding cracks resistance resulting from the desiccation process, it is observed, that the resistance is connected with the fiber content and increases with the increase of the fiber inclusion, and the optimum content is between 1% and 1.5%.

In this study, the effect of hybrid fiber reinforcement on the residual strength and impact resistance of high-strength cementitious composites exposed to high temperatures was investigated. A cementitious composites was manufactured in which 0.15 vol% of polypropylene fiber (PP) and 1.0 vol% of smooth steel fiber (SSF) were double-mixed, and a residual strength test was conducted while thermal stress was applied by heating test, and then a high-velocity impact test was performed. In the case of general cementitious composites, the rear surface is damaged due to explosion and low tensile strength during high temperature or impact, while hybrid fiber reinforced cementitious composites can repeatedly absorb and distribute stress until multiple fibers are damaged to suppress the propagation of impact and resistance to explosion. Therefore, this study analyzed the residual strength of cementitious composites exposed to high temperatures depending on whether hybrid fibers were mixed or not, and collected research data on fracture behavior through high-speed impact tests to evaluate impact resistance and mechanical properties.
The replacement of wheat flour with 4 to 24% soy fiber FIBRIM(R)1450 was evaluated to determine its effect on the properties of sponge cake. The volume and specific loaf volume decreased as the amount of soy fiber increased. In addition, the protein content and water holding capacity (WHC) were negatively correlated with the specific gravity of batter and the specific loaf volume of sponge cake, whereas there was no correlation between the mixograph characteristics and specific loaf volume of sponge cake in response to the addition of soy fiber. Furthermore, the symmetry and uniformity indices were not influenced by the addition of soy fiber. However, the L values of sponge cake crust and crumb decreased with increasing amounts of soy fiber, whereas a and b values were not affected. Additionally, the hardness, gumminess, and chewiness of the sponge cake all showed positive correlations with the protein content, sedimentation value, WHC and alkaline water retention capacity. Finally, the results of sensory evaluation indicated that external and internal colors, grain, texture, and flavor were not influenced by the addition of soy fiber, but that supplementation with over 20% soy fiber resulted in a slight decrease in taste and overall acceptability.
In the development of enteral foods for the patients with diarrhea, soybean hull, by-products of soybean processing, was used to prepare crude dietary fiber extracts (soybean hull fiber, SHF). Total dietary fiber content of SHF is 85% and their composition are 86.1% cellulose, 8.1% hemi-cellulose, and 4.7% lignin. The effects of SHF on the prevention of diarrhea were studied in animal. Spraque-Dawley (SD) rats were fed AIN93G diets containing 5% dietary fiber for 3days simultaneously inducing diarrhea with the phenolphthalein Mg citrate solution. On day 4, feces were collected at different time point. Dietary fibers used for the animal study were SHF, soybean cotyledon fiber (SCF), psyllium husk fiber (PHF), and chicory fiber (CF). ${\alpha}$-cellulose was used as a control. Body weight gain, calorie consumed and food efficiency ratio among the experimental groups were not different. However, water content in the feces of SHF group was significantly lower by 10%, compared with other groups at 24hrs. time point. This effect was even greater in the feces collected later than 24 hrs. time point. SHF seems to have a greater effects on slow the symptom of diarrhea. Based on the previous results, enteral food enriched with SHF were prepared and its effect was compared with other commercially available products from domestic or imported ones. Weight changes among experimental groups were not different, but the moisture content of feces consumed SHF enriched products were lower than that of other products. Approximately 10% decrease in water content was observed from feces collected at 24 hr time point. According to the sensory evaluation, overall acceptability of the enteral food enriched with SHF was 3.24 out of 5 indicating that taste of this product is acceptable.

The purpose of this paper is to propose a method for evaluation of varying stiffness coefficients of tailored conical shells (TCS). Furthermore, a comparison between buckling loads of these shells under axial load with the different fiber path is performed. A circular truncated conical shell subjected to axial compression is taken into account. Three different theoretical path containing geodesic path, constant curvature path and constant angle path has been considered to describe the angle variation along the cone length, along cone generator of a conical shell are offered. In the TCS with the arbitrary fiber path, the thickness and the ply orientation are assumed to be functions of the shell coordinates and influencing stiffness coefficients of the structure. The stiffness coefficients and the buckling loads of shells are calculated basing on classical shells theory (CST) and using finite-element analysis (FEA) software. The obtained results for TCS with arbitrary fiber path, thickness and ply orientation are derived as functions of shell longitudinal coordinate and influencing stiffness coefficients of structures. Furthermore, the buckling loads based on fiber path and ply orientation at the start of tailored fiber get to be different. The extent of difference for tailored fiber with start angle lower than 20 degrees is not significant. The results in this paper show that using tailored fiber placement could be applied for producing conical shells in order to have greater buckling strengths and lower weight. This work demonstrates the use of fiber path definitions for calculated stiffness coefficients and buckling loads of conical shells.
Improving the earthquake resistance of buildings through seismic retrofitting using steel braces can result in brittle failure at the connection between the brace and the building, as well as buckling failure of the braces. This paper proposes a new seismic retrofit methodology combined with glass fiber sheet (GFS) and non-compression X-brace system using carbon fiber (CFXB) for reinforced concrete buildings damaged in earthquakes. The GFS is used to improve the ductility of columns damaged in earthquake. The CFXB consists of carbon fiber bracing and anchors, to replace the conventional steel bracing and bolt connection. This paper reports the seismic resistance of a reinforced concrete frame strengthened using the GFS-CFXB system. Cyclic loading tests were carried out, and the hysteresis of the lateral load-drift relations as well as ductility capacities were investigated. Carbon fiber is less rigid than the conventional materials used for seismic retrofitting, resulting in some significant advantages: the strength of the structure increased markedly with the use of CF X-bracing, and no buckling failure of the bracing was observed.

In this study, the mechanical properties of a carbon fiber/polypropylene composite were evaluated according to the carbon fiber surface treatment. Carbon fiber surface treatments such as silane coupling agents and plasma treatment were performed to enhance the interfacial strength between carbon fibers and polypropylene. The treated carbon fiber surface was characterized by XPS, SEM, and single-filament tensile test. The interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) of the composite with respect to the surface treatment was determined by a short beam shear test. The test results showed that the ILSS of the plasma-treated specimen increased with the treatment time. The ILSS of the specimen treated with a silane coupling agent after plasma treatment increased by 48.7% compared to that of the untreated specimen.

According to the evaluation on GMT-sheet by molding conditions, fiber projection on the moldings surface was investigated. Fiber projection is one of the major defects on moldings surface due to matrix shrinkage. That is, fiber projection happens from different shrinkage of matrix and glass fiber. Height of fiber projection from moldings surface becomes smaller when molding pressure is higher during holding pressure and cooling process. Height of fiber projection is dominantly affected by molding pressure. With consideration of molding pressure, the formation of surface unevenness and change in fiber projection height was elucidated. In addition, coating layer is effective to suppress surface defects, and there is no fiber projection or crack in case that coating is applied. Coating layer improves surface roughness up to the level of the polypropylene which is a single material.

Poly-Lactic Acid(PLA) fiber is an eco-friendly material and is biodegradable, so it can be utilized for manufacturing porous construction materia ls with interna l pore connection. In this study, domestic PLA fiber products(0.5mm india meter, 1.0mm in length, 10mm in length) were tested for melting at high temperatures and high alkality, and they were incorporated with FA-based geopolymer. Compressive strength was obtained through high temperature curing and alkali activator, however the complete melting of the PLA fiber was not ensured. The previous study handling PLA fiber with 0.003mm in diameter was completely dissolved, but 0.5mm and 1.0mm in diameter showed 42.5% and 33.3% of dissolution ratio, respectively. In addition, the increasing fiber volume led floating fibers during curing, which had a negative effect on its workability and solubility. Although the properties of PLA fiber may vary depending on the raw materials and production conditions, PLA fiber with 0.1mm or less diameter is recommended for porous construction material.

PURPOSES : Reflection cracking has been one of the major causes of distress when asphalt pavement is laid on top of concrete pavement. This study evaluated the reflection cracking resistance of asphalt mixtures reinforced with asphalt embedded glass fiber and carbon fiber using a Texas Transportation Institute (TTI) overlay tester. METHODS : Different asphalt mixtures such as polymer-modified mastic asphalt (PSMA) and a dense graded asphalt mixture were reinforced with asphalt-embedded carbon fiber and glass fiber. For comparison purposes, two PSMA asphalt mixtures and one dense graded asphalt mixture were evaluated without fiber reinforcement. Two different overlay test modes, the repeated overlay test (R-OT) and monotonic overlay test (M-OT), were used to evaluate the reflection cracking resistance of asphalt mixtures at $0^{\circ}C$. In the R-OT test, the number of repeated load when the specimen failed was obtained. In the M-OT test, the tensile strength at the peak load and tensile strain were obtained. RESULTS : As expected, the fiber-reinforced asphalt mixture showed a higher reflection cracking resistance than the conventional nonreinforced asphalt mixtures based on the R-OT test and M-OT test. The dense graded asphalt mixture showed the least reflection cracking resistance and less resistance than the PSMA. CONCLUSIONS : The TTI overlay tester could be used to differentiate the reflection cracking resistance values of asphalt mixtures. Based on the R-OT and M-OT results, the carbon-fiber-reinforced asphalt mixture showed the highest reflection cracking resistance among the nonreinforced asphalt mixtures and glass-fiber-reinforced asphalt mixture.
