  • Currently, composite board manufacturing using natural fibers has the potential to expand owing to environmental awareness. To produce a composite board, treatment is required to improve the mechanical and physical properties of the natural fibers. In this study, sodium chloride (NaCl) was used for the chemical treatment. However, studies on chemical treatments using NaCl are limited. This study aimed to investigate the characteristics of kenaf fibers after NaCl treatment. The NaCl treatment concentrations were 1, 3, and 5 wt.% at room temperature, with soaking durations of 1, 2, and 3 h. The tensile strength, strain, and Young's modulus were measured to evaluate the mechanical properties of the fibers. The fiber bundle diameter, weight change owing to treatment, and contact angle were determined to analyze the effect of NaCl treatment. The kenaf fiber bundle treated with 5 wt.% NaCl for 3 h exhibited the highest tensile strength, Young's modulus, reduction in fiber bundle diameter, weight change, and decrease in contact angle compared to those of untreated fiber bundles. The tensile properties of the fiber bundle exhibited a tendency to decrease with increasing fiber bundle diameter. Increasing the soaking duration from 1 to 2 h did not result in a significant decrease in the fiber bundle diameter or an increase in tensile strength. However, a further increase in the soaking duration from 2 to 3 h resulted in a considerable decrease in the fiber bundle diameter and an increase in the tensile strength.

  • Kenaf has been estimated as an economic and environmentally compatible crop. This study purposed to enlarge the use of kenaf as textile materials and to develope high value-added textile fibers. Kenaf has been cultivated successfully and grown fast in Jeju. The height of kenaf stalks was about 220cm at 105 DAP and 400cm at 150 DAP, After harvesting at 105 DAP and seperating the basts from harvested kenaf stalks, decorticated kenaf basts were rotted in water at 15~$25^{\circ}C$ for biological rotting and were treated with 1%, 4% and 7% NaOH at 9$0^{\circ}C$ for chemical retting. The properties of extracted fibers were compared: such as fiber diameter. Transversal and longitudinal views, colors, crystallinities, strengths and elongations etc. The diameter of kenaf bast fibers was 15~25 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. Biologically rotted kenaf bast fibers had well developed lumens which were diminished after chemical retting. The degree of crystallinities of biologically rotted kenaf bast fiber was about 92~96% showed higher than those of chemically rotting. The biologically rotted fibers were bright and had creamy color. Yelloweness increased at chemically rotted fibers. Fiber bundle strengths were from maximum 98076.9 (gf/g) to minimum 63749.5 (gf/g). Fiber bundle strengths of biologically rotted kenaf fibers appeared greater than those of chemically rotted fibers. Alkali treatments of chemical rotting could make strength lower and elongation higher. Rotting method might be one of the most importance factors affecting to final fiber properties.

  • The purpose of this study is to induce the ductile behavior of the Ultra High Perfomance Concrete Reinforced I beam by substituting the part of steel fiber for bundle of reinforcing bars. Experiment of flexural behavior of the Ultra High Performance Concrete I shaped beam with the combination of the steel fiber and bundle of reinforcement bars was carried out. The volume fractions of steel fiber are 0%, 0.7%, 1%, 2%. The bundle of reinforcing bars and prestressing wire are used to restrain the concrete in compression zone. Length of bundle of reinforcing bar and prestressing wire is the one of test factors. The 9 Reinforced UHPC I shaped beam were made with these test factors. Not only steel fiber but also bundle of longitudinal reinforcing bar has effect to induce the ductile behavior of Reinforced UHPC I beam. The combination of 0.7% or 1.0% steel fiber and bundle of reinforcing bar showed the effective ductile behavior of I beam. The relationship of load-deflection and the crack pattern indicate the usefulness of the bundle of the longitudinal bar which has small diameter with close arrangement each other.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the anatomical characteristics, the radial and axial variation of the cell dimension and bulk density for four bamboo species used as the major material of bamboo products in Korea; Phyllostachys(P.bambusoides, P.edulis, P.nigra var.henonis, and Pnigra). The results obtained were summarized as follows; 1) In the outer part of culm, the mophological difference of cell diameter and distribution were not acknowledged. However, gum-like substance was occurred In the epidermis, hypodermis, cortex and metaxylem vessel of P.nigra, while it was occured only in the metaxylem vessel of P.edulis. 2) The protoxylem vessel in the central zone of culm-wall could be in the two types; the first type consisted of 4-5 small cell pieces occurred in P.edulis and P.nigra var. henonis, the second type of 1-2 large cell pieces in P.bambusoides and P.nigra. And transition of cell diameter from the vascular bundle sheath to the ground tissue was gradually enlarged in P.nigra and P.edulis but abruptly in P.bambusoides and P.nigra var. henonis. 3) Thin-wall tyloses were well developed in the outer and central zone of culm-wall in four species. 4) Compared with the central part of culm-wall, the number of parenchyma cells and the amount of the vascular bundle sheaths per unit area were a few in the inner part. The inner part nearest to the pith cavity was consisted of thick-well parenchyma cell. 5) The dimensional variations of metaxylem vessel and parenchyma cell in the radial direction were decreased from the inner part to the epidermis in all species observed. 6) The fiber length was the maximum in the central zone and its diameter was increased from the inner part to the outer part. In the axial variation. fiber length was slightly increased from the base and then decresed slowly toward the top, and its diameter was reverse. 7) The axial variation of the bulk density was continuously increased from the base toward the top and its radial variation was rapidly increased from the inner part to the epidermis.

  • In this study, microstructural characteristics and constituent elements of fiberglass splint and cast are examined using a scanning electron microscope and an energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer. As observed by the scanning electron microscope, fiberglass splint and cast had a porous structure with many bundles of fiberglass textures well assembled. Spaces between bundles of the fiberglass splint are triangular or elliptical shaped and the long-axis diameter is measured at about 1 mm. The thickness of fiber bundles covered with plaster is measured at 600 ㎛ and the diameter of a single strand of fiberglass is up to 10 ㎛. The thickness of the fiberglass bundle of the fiberglass splint is measured at about 700 ㎛. Spaces between bundles are formed in the shape of triangles with gentle edges and long-axis diameter of up to 1.4 mm, which is larger than that of the splint. The thickness of a single strand of fiberglass of the plaster-coated cast is 11.5 ㎛, which is thicker than that of fiberglass of the splint. As a result of analyzing constituent elements of the fiberglass cast and the splint with an energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer, Ca, Si, and Al components are identically detected. This result shows that the fiberglass cast has a smoother surface with hardened plaster than the fiberglass splint. The thickness of the fiberglass bundle and the thickness of a single strand of the fiberglass are also larger than those of the fiberglass splint.

  • The purpose of this paper is to induce the ductile behavior of the UHPFRC member after the peak load by using the bundle of longitudinal reinforcing bar as a substitute for steel fiber. Experiments on the flexural behavior of the Ultra High Performance Concrete rectangular beam with the combination of the steel fiber and longitudinal reinforcing bar were carried out. The volume fractions of steel fiber are 0%, 0.7%, 1%, 1.5%, 2% and the reinforcement ratios of longitudinal reinforcing bar which induce the ductile behavior are 0.0036, 0.016, 0.028 and 0.036. 15 UHPC beams were made with the combination of these test factors. Not only steel fiber but also bundle of longitudinal reinforcing bar has the effect to induce ductile behavior of UHPC structural member. The combination of 0.7% volume fraction of steel fiber and 0.028 reinforcement ratio showed the most economic combination. The relationship of load-deflection, strain variation of the concrete and the crack pattern indicate the usefulness of the bundle of the longitudinal bar which has small diameter with close arrangement each other.

  • Dark brown Alpaca fiber was reduced in shade via selective bleaching with peroxide. Two selective oxidative bleaching methods were tested on alpaca top to assess their effectiveness for color removal and fiber quality properties. Color change, bundle strength, weight loss, fiber diameter, surface modification, dye-ability and dye wash fastness were assessed for both methods and compared with the original brown top. Bleach method 1 (BL-I) showed little surface modification, 5.8% weight loss and 2.4% strength loss. D1925 yellowness index was reduced to 74.3 from 83.1 and provided a good base for the dyeing of medium to deep shades. Bleach method 2 (BL-II) displayed considerable surface modification, 7.8% weight loss and 18% strength loss. BL-II also resulted in a mean diameter reduction of 1.9 micron during bleaching. Yellowness was reduced to 64.5 from 83.1 and provided a very good base for the dyeing of medium to deep shades. BL-I showed better exhaustion of the premetallised dye Lanaset Violet B than BL-II. Wash fastness for BL-II was 1 grey scale unit poorer than BL-I. BL-II showed far better color clarity at pale depths however the wash fastness of the finished product was not good enough to maintain the depth or clarity of the color. BL-I showed poorer clarity of color but exhibited better wash fastness results.

  • In this paper, we report a modified technique for the production of oriented continuous nanofibers instead of non-woven mats using a rapidly rotating collection device. We are interested in retaining physical properties such as electrical conductivity of fiber bundles in their axial direction. The experiments were performed using polyethylene oxide (PEO) and its blend with polyaniline (PANI). According to the results, a typical fiber with a uniform diameter of about 100 nanometer was produced. The fibers from the PEO/ CHCl$_3$ solution show high crystallinity and good orientation whereas the fibers from the blend solution of PEO/PANI/m-cresol and CHCl$_3$ show no preferred orientation. However, the fibers of the blend exhibit high electrical conductivity of 33 S/cm for a fiber bundle at a PANI level of 50 %.

  • We present a new design for an endoscope objective lens composed of a lexible fiber bundle with 30,000 core, and a gradient-index (GRIN) objective lens with an optical adaptor. The characteristic of this objective lens is to be minimally-invasive to be able to insert easily in the internal organs of live animals. The GRIN lens has a small diameter and a very simple construction, which is selected with the diameter of 1.0 mm and numerical aperture of 0.5 to achieve a minimally-invasive outer diameter and a high resolution. The resultant designed lens shows the performance as follows; a lateral resolution of 1.63 um and diameters of 100% encircled energy of $0.3\;{\mu}m$ and $0.83\;{\mu}m$ for the on-axis and the off-axis image point, respectively. Also, we can present a cheap solution with a lateral resolution of 1.74 um and diameters of 100% encircled energy of $1.10\;{\mu}m$ and $2.84\;{\mu}m$ for the on-axis and the off-axis image point, respectively.

  • Measurements of multiphase flows containing bubbles have been limited because most existing methods target one phase flows. Especially, multiphase flows with a high void ratio have been rarely successful in measurements due to the sudden change of density and thick interfaces between air and water. This study introduces two methods that are capable of measuring flow fields regardless of bubble void ratio, named bubble image velocimetry and bundle fiber optic flow meter. The calculation of the depth of field is suggested to reduce and estimate errors by perspective image velocimetry. The bundle fiber optic flow meter is designed to increase a measurement rate using many optical fibers with a thin diameter. The two methods measured bubble plumes to test reliability and the velocity measurements show good agreement. In addition a hydraulic jump, one of the multiple flows in rivers was measured to test applicability of the methods.
