Acoustic emission(AE) has emerged as a powerful nondestructive tool to detect or monitor preexisting defects and leaks in the vessel structures. A Bragg grating based acoustic emission sensor system is developed. Various type of fiber Bragg grating sensor including the variable length of sensing part was fabricated and prototype sensor system was tested by using PZT pulser and pencil lead break sources. Two types of sensor attachment were used. First, the fiber Bragg grating sensor was attached fully to the surface using bonding agent. Second one is that one part of fiber was attached to the surface partly by bonding and the other part of fiber will be act as a cantilever. That is, the resonant frequency of the fiber Bragg grating sensor will depend on the length of sensing part. The final goal of the sensor system is to provide on-line monitoring of cracks or leaks in reactor vessel head penetration of nuclear power plants.
A fiber laser of which wavelength was scanned by an intra-cavity FP (Fabry-Perot) filter was used to interrogate a fiber Bragg grating strain sensor array. We calculated the wavelength variation of the fiber laser using quadrature signal processing with an unbalanced M/Z (Mach-Zehnder) interferometer and time-delayed sampling technique. The calculated wavelengths are mapped to corresponding temporal reflection peaks from the sensor array, which enables more accurate and stable interrogation without the problems caused by the FP filter's nonlinear characteristics. Wavelength resolution of ∼20 pm was obtained in our experimental setup, which could have been greatly enhanced with faster phase modulation.

Strain-gauges have been dominantly used to measure strain at various points on a rotor, however, either a slip ring or telemetry has to be used to send sensor signals to data acquisition instruments at stationary side. Both slip ring and telemetry have numerous inherent problems which force severe limitations in real applications. This paper introduces a new rotor condition monitoring system using FBG(Fiber Bragg Grating) sensors and a rotary optical coupler. A single optical fiber with many FBG sensors is installed on the rotor and an optical dynamic interrogator is installed at stationary side. The sensor signal connection between rotating part and stationary part is made by the rotary optical coupling method which makes use of light's unique characteristic-light travels through space. Broad band light source from the interrogator travels to the optical fiber on the rotor and reflected FBG sensor signals travel back to the optical fiber on stationary side and are connected to the interrogator. Rotary optical coupler's insertion loss change due to rotation is compensated by using a reference sensor installed at the center of the rotor. The proposed system's performance has been successfully demonstrated by accurately measuring strains at 5 points on a blade rotating at high speed.
I have investigated a scheme for suppressing stimulated Brillouin scattering in optical fibers. The scheme makes use of a sampled Bragg grating fabricated within the fiber used for transmitting intense Q-switched pulses. The grating is designed such that the spectrum of the Stokes pulse generated through stimulated Brillouin scattering falls entirely within its stop band. I show numerically that the number of sampled fiber Bragg gratings in 1 m is applied directly to suppressing stimulated Brillouin scattering rather than the coupling coefficient. This prevents the build up of the backward-propagating Stokes wave and mitigates the deleterious effects of stimulated Brillouin scattering. The simulation shows that 15 ns pulses with 1 kW peak power can be transmitted though a 1 m-long fiber with little energy loss using this scheme.
We have designed an extended L-band Erbium-doped fiber amplifier to amplify 1625 nm optical time domain reflectometry signal for a long distance monitoring system. The proposed amplifier has a dual-stage structure without an isolator. Gain improvement of 5.1 dB has been achieved by adding a fiber Bragg grating and a narrow band pass filter. As a result, the 16.3 dB gain and 7.1 dB noise figure has been successfully accomplished.

We studied the effect of $Co^{60}$ gamma-radiation on the fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) by irradiation time of UV Krypton fluoride (KrF) excimer laser among grating processing parameters. The FBGs were fabricated in a different UV laser irradiation time at 30, 60, 90, and 120 seconds using the same commercial Ge-doped silica core fiber (SMF-28e). It was exposed to gamma-radiation up to a high dose of 34.3 kGy at the dose rate of 106 Gy/min, and then it was analyzed radiation effects by measuring the radiation-induced change in the temperature sensitivity coefficient and Bragg wavelength shift. According to the experimental results, We confirmed that the UV laser irradiation period for grating inscription has a highly effect on the radiation sensitivity of the FBGs. The radiation-induced Bragg wavelength shift by the change of laser irradiation conditions showed a difference more than about 50 %.

A fiber optic based weight sensor has fabricated using a fiber Bragg grating with a weight sensitive. The sensing concept exploits the inherent characteristics of the FBG and is based on the strain effect induced in the fiber Bragg grating through. A direct indication of the weight level is given by the shift of the Bragg wavelength caused by the expansion of the sensing material. A FBG behaves like a spectral filter which has inherent characteristics that render it very sensitive to strain and temperature. The sensing principle is also based on the strain effect induced in the FBG through the caused by the weight. The experimental setup used for the initial investigation to characterize the mass response of the sensor. The transmitted signal from the sensor was monitored using an optical spectrum analyzer with a resolution bandwidth of 0.4nm. In this paper, we presented the spectral characterization and shaping of FBG by scanning a mass element that affects a small grating fraction at a time, without permanent effects on the optical fiber when the various wavelength and strain is removed. That is, destruction when the optical fiber for weight is physically damaged.

An optical temperature sensor based on the etched planar waveguide Bragg grating is developed and its performance is explored using theoretical and experimental methods. The planar waveguide is designed and fabricated using optical lithography and wet chemical etching. An efficient butt coupled optical fiber is used to examine the spectral characteristics of the grating sensor, and to investigate the grating parameters. The typical bandwidth and reflectivity of the surface etched grating has been ~0.2 nm and ~7%, respectively, at a wavelength of ~1,552 nm. The temperature-induced wavelength change of the optical sensor is found to be slightly non-linear over ${\sim}200^{\circ}C$ temperature range. Theoretical models for the grating response of the sensor based on waveguide and classical laminated plate deformation theories agree with experiments to within acceptable tolerance.
Among many fiber optic sensors, FBG sensors are being studied more actively than any other sensor due to good multiplexing capabilities. Recently, the application fields of FBG sensors are mainly focused on the composite materials through embedding rather than attaching on the surface. However, there are many limitations on the embedding FBG sensors into composite materials because of the birefringence effects which is induced when FBG sensors are not embedded parallel to the reinforcing fiber. In this study, the fabrication method of FBG sensors with various grating length that are easy to fabricate with good multiplexing capabilities and more stable from the birefringence effects are investigated. The signal characteristics of the FBG sensors are also verified through the cure monitoring of 2 kinds of composite materials.
In this article, a smart multifunctional optical system-on-a-chip (SOC) sensor platform is presented and its application for fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensor interrogation in optical sensor networks is investigated. The smart SOC sensor platform consists of a superluminescent diode as a broadband source, a tunable microelectromechanical system (MEMS) based Fabry-P$\acute{e}$rot filter, photodetectors, and an integrated microcontroller for data acquisition, processing, and communication. Integrated with a wireless sensor network (WSN) module in a compact package, a smart optical sensor node is developed. The smart multifunctional sensor platform has the capability of interrogating different types of optical fiber sensors, including Fabry-P$\acute{e}$rot sensors and Bragg grating sensors. As a case study, the smart optical sensor platform is demonstrated to interrogate multiplexed FBG strain sensors. A time domain signal processing method is used to obtain the Bragg wavelength shift of two FBG strain sensors through sweeping the MEMS tunable Fabry-P$\acute{e}$rot filter. A tuning range of 46 nm and a tuning speed of 10 Hz are achieved. The smart optical sensor platform will open doors to many applications that require high performance optical WSNs.
